"Dahi Handi: A Festival of Unity and Joy"
"Govinda Ala Re Ala!
The sound of drums, the rustle of clothes, and the shout of triumph... Dahi Handi is here!
Govinda Pathaks making Human Pyramid
Dahi Handi is a joyful celebration in India, typically observed on the second day of Krishna Janmashtami. It is a Hindu Festival. Dahi refers to Curd and Hundi refers to an earthern pot filled with milk products. Dahi Handi also Known as Gopalkala or Utalotsavam. Krishna loved butter and curd as a child, and would often break pots to get it. This is what Dahi Handi celebrates.
"Why Dahi Handi is Celebrated a Day After Janmashtami?"
because, according to mythological tradition, Lord Krishna's birthday is celebrated on the day of Janmashtami, and the next day is considered the day when he started his childhood antics, including breaking pots of butter and curd.
Dahi Handi :History
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna loved butter and curd. So he along with his friends used to steal butter and curd from the neighborhood too . Tired of this mischievous nature of Shri Krishna, he filled the pots with butter and curd and hang their pots at a height where it was difficult to reach that for little kanha.Little Krishna came up with the idea of making a human pyramid in order to reach their goal. That's why he was known as Makhan Chor.
How Dahi Handi is celebrated?
Dahi Handi is celebrated with great enthusiasm and energy. The festival begins with music, dance and Chanting of krishna's name. Then formation of Human pyramids by Govinda teams begins.
The teams attempt to break the clay pot (handi) hung high above the ground, filled with curd, butter, the contents spill out, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Then curd and butter distributed among crowd. The team that breaks the pot wins prizes and praise. Then, everyone celebrates with more music, dance, and fun, to honor Krishna's fun and loving nature.
Dahi Handi Celebration in Maharashtra
Maharashta , particularly Mumbai, is known for its vibrant Dahi Handi celebrations.
•Thousands of Govinda teams or Govinda pathak (Govinda is another of Lord Krishna ), mostly comprising young men, participate in the celebrations, showcasing their strength, agility, and teamwork.Govinda teams start practicing weeks in advance, perfecting their formations. On the festival day, they compete to break as many Dahi Handis as possible, forming towering 5-7 tier human pyramids that showcase their remarkable strength, strategy, and teamwork.
•Dahi Handi in Maharashtra is highly competitive, with teams vying for prizes and recognition. Many events offer substantial cash prizes, attracting skilled teams from across the state.
•Bollywood celebrities often participate in or sponsor Dahi Handi events, adding glamour to the celebrations.
•Participants and spectators wear traditional attire, including kurta-pyjamas and phetas.
• Maharashtrian cuisine, such as puran poli and vada pav, is an integral part of the celebrations.
• Dahi Handi in Maharashtra is a community-driven celebration, with locals actively participating and organizing events.
•The Maharashtra government provides support and recognition to Dahi Handi celebrations, promoting the state's cultural heritage.
Women's Parcipation in Dahi Handi:
Traditionally, Dahi Handi was a male-dominated festival, but in recent years, women's participation has increased significantly.
•Some cities now have all-women Govinda teams, who form human pyramids and break the handi with equal enthusiasm and skill. Some organizers arrange separate competitions for women, offering equal prizes and recognition.
•Organizers holding training sessions and workshops specifically for women is a wonderful way to encourage their participation in Dahi Handi.
•Women's participation in Dahi Handi promotes gender equality.
By breaking the handi together, men and women break down gender barriers, promoting a more inclusive and equal society.
Administration Role:
The administration plays very important role in organizing Dahi Handi Celebrations by providing necessary permissions, ensuring saftey measures such as Medical Survice, Fire Brigades, etc.
They promote events through local media and social media. Additionally, they maintain law and order, collaborate with event organizers, and provide support to ensure a smooth and successful celebration.
Dahi Handi is more than just a festival – it's a symbol of the unbreakable human spirit. With every handi broken and every pyramid formed, we are reminded that together, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.
Happy Dahi Handi🙏🙏🙏🙏

Mpox: A New Global Health Threat
Just as the world is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, a new health threat has emerged: mpox, a viral disease that's spreading rapidly globally. The outbreak has been reported in several countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it is considered endemic, and other countries in Africa and beyond.
The WHO has reported over 15,600 cases and 537 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with cases also reportved in neighboring countries such as Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda . The outbreak has also been reported in India, with four cases reported in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir .
What is M-pox?
mpox is not a separate disease but earlier it was known as monkey pox.The name was changed from "monkeypox" to "mpox" to avoid stigma towards monkeys and reflect the virus's direct human infectivity.Mpox is a rare viral infection that can spread from person to person.
The virus was first identified in monkeys in 1958 but has since been found to infect humans as well.
Transmission: Mpox is primarily spread through:
- Direct contact with infected animals (rodents, primates)
- Human-to-human contact (skin-to-skin, respiratory droplets)
- Contaminated surfaces or objects
Common symptoms of mpox are:
•rash
•fever
•sore throat
•headache
•muscle aches
•back pain
•low energy
•swollen lymph nodes.
This symptoms can last for 2-3 weeks. Some people may have one or a few skin lesions and others have hundreds or more. These can appear anywhere on the body such as the:
•palms of hands and soles of feet
•face, mouth and throat
•groin and genital areas
•anus.
Not everyone will experience all symptoms, and their severity can vary from person to person. If you suspect you've been exposed or are showing symptoms, consult a healthcare professional immediately.
Treatment :
There are no specific treatments for monkeypox virus infection. Early and supportive care is important to help manage symptoms and avoid further problems. However, there are several antiviral medications used to treat smallpox and other conditions that may help patients with mpox.
Prevention:
- Vaccination (available for high-risk groups)
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers
- Safe handling and cooking of animal products
- Avoiding close contact with infected individuals
mpox is a rapidly spreading viral disease that requires immediate attention and action. Understanding its transmission, symptoms, and prevention strategies is crucial to contain its spread. While there is no specific treatment, early supportive care and antiviral medications can help manage symptoms. Vaccination and personal protective measures are key to preventing mpox. Let's stay informed, take precautions, and work together to mitigate this emerging health threat.

Breaking the scilence: abusing sexual violence in maharashtra
While the country has not yet recovered from the rape and murder cases in Kolkata, two four-year-old girls were raped by a cleaner of the same school in Badlapur. This incident is shocking. After this news hit the social media, the administration woke up with a rude awakening. The parents go to the police station to file a complaint, but the parents had to wait for twelve hours. The government ordered the suspension of the senior police inspector, assistant sub-inspector and head constable of Badlapur police station for delaying action taking cognisance of the complaint.Angry agitators also vandalised the school by breaking the window panes, benches and doors.Protests started on Tuesday morning due to this incident and the delay at the police station. Due to this agitation, the local train services of Mumbai were affected. Protesters also staged demonstrations on the streets of Badlapur and obstructed major roads and highways. It escalated when some protesters started pelting stones at the police and on the premises of the school where the alleged sexual assault took place.
The fact that the victims were so young and vulnerable makes this incident particularly disturbing. The scene of the crime, a school, heightens this intensity, as it is a place where children feel safe and protected. School is the home of learning , where children grow and develope and the future of our country is formed and hence parents send their children to school with the belief that their child will be safe there and will make themselves and the country better by getting good education. If this incident is coming from here, the outcry of parents and public is understandable.Fear and anxiety now grip parents and guardians, intensifying their vigilance and concern for their children's safety. Moreover, this incident has shattered faith in institutions responsible for protecting and educating children, leaving a trail of emotional trauma in its wake.
"A Call to Action: Implementing Solutions to Prevent Child Abuse and Empower Girls and Women
The incident in Badlapur is a stark reminder of the need for collective action to prevent child abuse and protect the rights of girls and women. We must move beyond outrage and protests to implement concrete solutions. Schools, authorities, parents, and communities must work together to create a safe and protective environment for children, especially girls, who are disproportionately affected by abuse. This includes enforcing stricter background checks for school employees, increasing awareness about child abuse and gender-based violence, and providing support services for victims.
We need Systemic solutions such as
1. Stricter laws and punishments for child abuse and sexual assault.
2. National registry of sex offenders to prevent repeat offenders.
3. Standardized safety protocols for schools across the country.
4. Increased funding for child protection services.
These solutions aim to address the immediate needs of the victims and the community, while also working towards long-term prevention and systemic change.
Additionally, we must empower girls and women through education, economic opportunities, and social support to break the cycle of vulnerability. We owe it to the children and to future generations to act now and ensure that such incidents never happen again. Let us join hands to create a society where children, girls, and women can grow up safely, without fear, and with equal opportunities to thrive."
the cases of child abuse and sexual violence in Maharashtra are a stark reminder of the need for collective action. We must work together to create a society where children feel safe and supported. Let us learn from these incidents and strive to build a brighter future for all. Together, we can make a difference.

Rakshabandhan : A festive of Love and Protection
"Raksha Bandhan, a festival celebrated across India, is a beautiful expression of the bond between brothers and sisters."Rakhsha Bandhan is a famous festival among Hindu religion. This festival is widely celebrated in India and signifies the brotherhood and love among Indians, which is the true significance of Rakhsha Bandhan.Rakshabandha is bond that shows the purity and bonding between siblings.
Raksha Bandhan is observed on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shravana, which typically falls in August. The term "Raksha Bandhan" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Raksha," meaning protection, and "Bandhan," meaning to tie. Therefore, the festival signifies "the tie or knot of protection."
If we look into the pages of history, we will find mention of Raksha Bandhan many times. But the most popular story in Indian mythology is that of Lord Krishna and draupadi ( The wife of five Pandavas ).According to this story, when Lord Krishna killed Shishupal with the Sudarshan Chakra, his finger got cut and started bleeding. Seeing this, Draupadi tore the pallu of her sari and tied it on Krishna's finger. At that very moment, Krishna accepted Draupadi as his sister and promised to protect her for life. Krishna told Draupadi that whenever she finds herself in trouble, she can remember him. When Draupadi was being disrobed in Dhritarashtra's court and an attempt was being made to remove her sari, even Pandava Bhishma Pitamah Dronacharya Vidur could not save Draupadi's honour. Then Draupadi closed her eyes and remembered her brother Shri Krishna. Hearing sister Draupadi's call, Shri Krishna saved her honour with his power and fulfilled the responsibility of protecting her.
The ceremony starts after the sister has done aarti, which is a custom in which the sister swings the thali in circular motions around the brother to bestow him with divine protection. Sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of their brothers. After this, they sweeten their brother's mouth with their favorite sweets. After every custom is successfully done, now comes the most exciting time of getting rewards from brothers. They reciprocate to their sisters by means of lavish return gifts and tokens of money.
How rakshabandhan celebrated in moden times?
Nowadays, even brothers tie Rakhi on their sister's wrists, and sisters also perform the ritual among each other. If some siblings live in different cities, they send each other virtual rakhis and messages on social media and express there love for each other.
Nowadays, Raksha Bandhan is not limited to only the Hindu religion or Indian celebrations; it is also celebrated by other religions and in different parts of the world.
•In the United States, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated by people of Indian origin, as well as by non-Indians who appreciate its values.
•In the UK, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated by people of Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi origin, showcasing its cultural significance.
Its universal themes of love, protection, and sibling bonding have resonated with people from diverse backgrounds, making it a truly global festival.
Let's celebrate a festive of rakhi with a promise of protection , love and lifelong companionship.
Happy rakshabandhan 🙏🙏
