Old Man Resting in Road Against Brickwall by Lewis W. Hine (1918-1919). I chose this image for a couple of reasons. It really is heart wrenching seeing somebody down on their luck like this. The backdrop of bricks on the right with the tree on the left almost creates a frame in which this man is the center, emphasizing his expression. The forty on the left by the tree also creates an added effect of alcohol possibly being a major factor in this man's life.

Great Pyramid and Great Sphinx by Francis Frith (1858). The Egyptians were a great power in ancient times evident by what they left behind. I chose this photo because I feel it delivers a message of the strength and power of the Egyptians during ancient times. With the sphinx on the bottom right and the pyramid on the left, in one picture Frith was able to capture both marvels of engineering in one shot. This ancient wonder of the world has long outlasted its creators and will do for centuries to come.

Two Fiat 500's by Richard Kalvar (1978). The fiat 500 was the people's car of Italy from its creation in 1957. The car needed to be small enough to navigate through the winding roads and alleys of Italy and large enough to hold a family. This perfect family car was a revolutionary creation. In this picture, you see two older "cinquecentos" parked nearly touching each other. I chose this image because of how much I feel it represents small town Italy. Not only does this remind me of how tight the traffic can be, but the background of a semi-brick wall is just a quintessential image of my grandmother's town of Frosolone. Also, I love the sense of age in the cars: from the dents on the left car to the paint chipped off on the right, it feels very rustic.
