Earlier this week I mentioned putting pickle juice in my water to replenish electrolytes. I work outside in a very hot and humid area, so it was very necessary.

Since then, a LOT of people have chimed in with their favorite hot weather drinks. I want to try... all of them. I've only had a few. Many of them are similar, but I still think its cool how many variations there are for 'its fucking hot out here and I don't want to die.'

So here is the incomplete list.

Deltarune Chapter 5 Spoilers - Weird Route + Secret Boss Fight

So I watched the Secret Boss battle and the Weird Route ending, and I might be completely off-track here, but I realized there could be an even more horrible reason why Noelle ended up in the Lake.

During the Pink fight it's revealed that she is a Lightner ghost whose body has also become a Darkner of its volition.

Then there's also the fact - somewhat related although not exactly the same - that in Chapter 4 Gerson's spirit appeared in the Dark World because of the dusty hammer in Alvin's office.

So far the implication seems to be that dead Monsters can be 'brought back to life' in a Dark World if the Fountain touches an object strongly associated with them via their dust (Gerson). OR, alternatively, if an object in the Light World is possessed/merged with a Monster's spirit (Pink).

I know you could argue that Pink is a ghost Monster rather than an actual ghost - however, the fact that the two Secret Boss in Chapters 4 and 5 have both been a spirit of some kind seems a little odd to be a pure coincidence.

Two strong Secret Bosses.

Two Monsters with a connection to specific objects in the Light World.

Add in the fact that Kris lost their absolute shit when The Player put the ThornRing on her and.......

Again, I might be completely wrong... but what if the Weird Route Ending in this chapter wasn't about them transporting to a mysterious place together as the white static covers the screen?

What if the point of this Lake scene was to kill Noelle in order to bind her spirit to the ThornRing - so she can become even stronger in the Dark World.....

My thoughts on TADC Episode 9

After giving it a few days just to sit with the TADC finale, I've jotted out some of my thoughts. I'll probably have more in the future, but I think I've given it enough time to have a solid sense of how I feel about it.

Spoilers for TADC Episode 9 below!!

Positives

The voice acting was phenomenal. Everyone was at the top of their game in this episode, especially Lizzie Freeman, Michael Kovach and Skye Redden.

Animation was equally fantastic. Both in the subtler character moments, and the snappier, style-pushing moments.

Visually it was gorgeous. The time-lapses. The scenes behind the Jax doors. The Jax and Pomni sequence in the dark. All of it was superb. The music was also very good.

The themes of acceptance, forgiveness, the danger of succumbing to self-hatred and fear, and the eventual message of working together to support one another during rough times were peak catharsis. When those scenes hit, they really hit for me. It was like it was specifically designed to annihilate me emotionally.

I was pleased that Gangle was allowed to not feel bad for Jax. Given how badly Jax bullied her, I think if the writing had forced Gangle into grieving for Jax, it would’ve been a big yikes moment.

So so so ecstatic that Caine returned and got his happy ending (no I’m not biased at all, what are you talking about?!). Again, if Caine hadn’t come back, I think it would’ve been a major yikes moment for me.

The Not-So Positives

The Caine in the Void sequence wasn’t very clear. I understand that it might’ve been an artistic choice to be ambiguous. However, when Scratch popped back onto the stage, for a moment I thought Caine had either brought him back from abstraction or Caine was going to use Scratch as a new avatar for himself instead. It was only at the end of the sequence that I started to figure out that it was two different timelines.

And speaking of… “Scratch. The first abstraction.” – I was disappointed that this was never addressed. It was made out to be this big cliffhanger at the end of Episode 7, especially given Caine’s reaction in Episode 7, but we never learnt what happened.

Also the fact that we never found out why Queenie ended up abstracting feels like a big omission, particularly when it plays such a fundamental role in Kinger’s character.

While I love that Caine got a happy ending, I have to say it did feel… rushed. When I watched Episode 8, it seemed like an abrupt heel-turn on Caine’s part – I thought there would be a bit more denial or cajoling before he did his big villain breakdown, leaning more in the direction of desperate/obsessive love rather than straight into tormenting them. But, sure, okay that’s fine. I figured it would lead to either a big confrontation in Episode 9 or Caine would have a tragic ending and stay dead.

When Episode 9 was playing out, we see Caine (hooray!), he finds out the human’s names, he has a small monologue to himself, a tiny Jekyll and Hyde moment… and then realizes the error of his ways, pulls the Blue AI out of his head, and goes back to the Circus.

I dunno, it just felt a little… flat to me.

On the one hand, there is something to be said about Caine realizing by himself that what he did was wrong, to accept that fact, and to decide to do better – especially as a parallel to Jax’s story. But on the other hand, I feel like it would’ve been more effective if he had a moment similar to Jax and Pomni’s. Because, apart from Zooble’s comment about pushing Caine too much in Episode 8, it didn’t feel like the humans ever acknowledged that Caine had his own fears/hurt he was trying to deal with, even though he went about it the wrong way. Instead it was kind of… skipped over? If we’d had that type of scene, I think it would’ve helped complete his character arc.

I felt like there were a few character inconsistencies as well. Kinger seems pretty lucid in the light in many of the flashbacks (both in Episode 8 and 9) – which is at odds with the insinuation previously presented to us that Queen’s abstraction combined with a prolonged period of being the only human in the Circus before Ragatha appeared almost broke his mind. Is the implication that he just became more insane the longer he stayed in the Circus, despite Ragatha and later the others being around for company?

Also Ragatha didn’t seem bothered that Jax was spending more and more time with Ribbit, which doesn’t really fit with her people-pleasing/wanting-everyone-to-like-her flaw.

I think that the series overall would’ve benefited from either an extra episode or an extra 30 mins in the episode. I’m not saying that every plot point or backstory bit needed to be answered, but I do think there were a few too many left unresolved for my liking.

So, on reflection, I would probably now put the finale at a 6.5 or 7 out of 10 – still enjoyable but flawed. I was pleased with the ending we got; I just think the way we arrived at that ending could’ve been better.

However, the fact that this animated series started out on YouTube and ended up released in so many cinemas is a huge achievement for everyone involved. And when you add this work into the context of other recent releases like Backrooms and Iron Lung, it’s really interesting and exciting to see how these internet creators (both big and small) are breaking through into the traditional movie landscape. I hope that Gooseworx, Glitch Productions, and all the artists and voice actors involved continue to create and they keep going from strength to strength.

Emotionally it was very impactful and I think it did a pretty good job wrapping up its main themes. There were a few elements I would've liked to have been developed further or resolved slightly differently - but some of that is just down to personal taste.

On balance I think it was a strong finale. Definitely a solid 8/10 for me.

I'll probably give it a few days before I get deeper into my thoughts about it (if I do, that is, I always struggle to find the right words for it all!).
