Why are people just posting about the event and ignoring all the Natlan stuff? Why are there STILL people who feel comfortable enough to say that they adore Natlan's designs? Why have I even seen a few people unashamedly admit to giving Hoyoverse money AFTER all the Natlan marketing? With no acknowledgment towards ANYTHING going on in the fandom?
Come on. These people are exactly why we need to keep talking about this! Even if you think that taking action against Hoyo won't change anything(honestly, I doubt it myself), there is no reason why we can't try. If we don't keep this up, this massive fandom will once again become a racist space with no room for activism, that lies down and happily accepts whatever their favorite million dollar company does, just like it has been since the very beginning.
And regardless, you still shouldn't be giving them money. They are constantly racist, sexist, fatphobic, and ableist.
It's taken me some time to come to this opinion, but I actually believe that you should.
(TLDR: Quitting undermines it's popularity, with scares off investors and collaborators, both major sources of income. It does that while making the server costs less justified and sending a bigger message.)
Also, let me make it very clear not to harass anyone, regardless of your opinion on it. It is one thing to make your opinion known. It is another thing to be disrespectful, mocking, and mean spirited. (I can't believe I have to say this to a group older than 7) but remember the golden rule when speaking. Again, this goes for everyone, regardless of opinion.
So if you've heard the boycott surrounding Hoyoverse over it's racist and colorist attitudes, such as: basing regions of of Latin America, Africa, and Swansa but have the majority of the cast be paper white, or have a light tan, having Arlans, the only playable darkskinned character in HSR skills refrence slavery, and portray Carole Peppers shame for her dark skin, even going to the point of bleaching it, as a justified choice.
In response to this, many players have started to boycott hoyoverse. The problem is that people are saying that it's okay to play the game as long as you don't spend money. Obviously, we shouldn't spend money, but I disagree that you can still play the games and boycott effectively. This is actually what a lot of the critics were saying, albeit in a disrespectful and mocking way, with a sprinkle of racism, but they have a point. The boycott will not be effective if we do not stop playing the games. Here are the reasons:
Hoyoverse cares about the active playerbase count. This is why they try so many tactics to keep the active playerbase active. Even if you do not spend any money, you pay for the game in your time. Firstly, having a large active player base is an indicator of sucess, which encourages investors and financial contributors to keep pouring in money. These sources of income are a lot bigger than the average player who just spends on welkin, so in order to attack one of their biggest revenue streams, we have to make the investors and financial contributors unsure about the success of their games. Secondly, by having an active player base, you make their games more appealing to collaborators. Who's gonna collab with a game nobody plays anymore? Who's gonna sell merch of a game nobody plays anymore? You also will be hurting them in that way.
Server costs. I once heard someone say that server costs is one of the biggest expenses for Hoyoverse, and therefore we should play in order to tax on it. But the thing is, the server is going to be running whether or not we're there, and the people who don't care/are against the boycott are still playing. If the number of players on the server is about the same, then running the server is a justified cost. If like half of us leave, then running the server becomes less justified, and in Hoyoverses minds, more expensive.
It sends a bigger message. Admittedly, many of us are F2P, so not spending money while continuing to play the game is just keeping the status quo. The status quo, in the eyes of Hoyoverse, means that everything is alright, even if there is noise on Twitter. That is the opposite of what we want to say.
But I feel like many people are conflating quitting the game with leaving the fandom entirely, but that's not the case. Keep making noise about it, and feel free to consume content related to Hoyoverse (though be selective on this. Personally, I feel like it's disingenuous to consume content that pretends that everything is fine, and this is regarding this matter, and other more dire crisis, but we can disagree on this). In addition, leaving the fandom entirely is counterintuitive, since we'll leave the fandom in the hands of people who are apathetic at best and racist at worst, allowing Hoyoverse to continue to be racist, if not enabling it to be even more racist, but creating a toxic enviornment for anyone in the orbit. So quit the game, keep interacting with the fandom.
Also, I'm coming back to say that while interacting with the fandom, it's not bad if people talk about the cultural inspirations from the game, even if they talk about Hoyoverse positively in it. If it's one thing that Hoyoverse does well, it's research cultures (even if it fails to represent its people). I will be talking about any Kikuyu or Kenyan rep I see when Natlan drops (by scouring the Genshin wiki/other non-in-game sources). So far we have one!
Some other ways to boycott:
Block Hoyoverse social media accounts. Watch their online popularity drop and the tags being taken over by the boycotters.
Don't spend money on merch. This is self explanatory since the once who advocate for the boycott and playing the game do this. Use the money to donate to any vetted campaign for Palestine, Congo, Sudan, ect. Advocating for fictional POC but not irl POC and non POC is a bit weird, imo.
Boycott the companies Hoyoverse has collabed with in the past. This makes any future collaborators wary of doing so, and in addition to the active player base dropping, we could see a reduction in collabs. Many of these companies were Zionist too, so you should've been doing that anyways. But if you need any extra motivation to do so, nows you're chance.
Artist: Flood the art competition for the Natlan characters with art that gives the characters darker skin.
Sign the petition. We've reached. 10k signatures, let's see if we can get to 15k
Try and convince the CN side of the fandom. CN voices have a lot of power, and although there is a lot of backlash, I believe it is possible to convince at least some people. So if you can, you should try.

To those saying that boycotting is futile since Hoyoverse is not going to change, I understand. But is it not better to try and fail rather than to not try at all?
To those saying that you can boycott while still playing, please note that this is not an attack on you or on the boycott. This is me trying to make the boycott as effective as possible. Please try to understand where I'm coming from, and understand that it doesn't need to be a dry stop. I know many of you are attached to the game, I was, so it took me a bit of a staggered stop, but a slow and jerky stop is better than continuing into danger.
So yeah, go F2P monarchs, and quit playing the games!
More and other reasons to boycott under the cut (if Natlan and Sumeru are not enough for you) (TW Pedophilia and Abuse)
-Scamming (nerfed Neuvillette months after his release and first rerun in a major way that basically impacted his playstyle in order to boost sales for Mualani, the next hydro catalyst DPS. They only reverted it because the Chinese playerbase was gonna report them to the government for scamming)
-Stingy and doesn't listen to the playerbase (Remember the 3 wishes incident? The last time they listened to the western playerbase was in the anniversary)
-Doesn't do background checks on VAs (although this is more of the studios fault than Hoyoverses itself. Tighnari's former EN VA used his position to talk inappropriately to minors, Moze's former EN VA is a known and admitted abuser, Oz's former CN VA also abused his position inappropriately
-Sexualizing Women. Just pick and women at random honestly. The writing is great, the design is fanservic-y, and they kinda just let the sexualization done by the fanbase run wild (although this is a problem among the wider AniGame community, with some being notoriously worse (although that doesn't make Hoyoverse games good or excusable) and not just a Hoyoverse issue.)
I used to be a big genshin impact lore buff, i played, i read, i was on forums, i made fanart, and then i was deeply disrespected by the game itself (this post is about natlan)
I am brazilian and i follow a religion named candomblé. Long story short, its from yoruba people who were sent to brazil as slaves, then went through a big process of spreading out to not just black people, but light-skinned people of lower classes like my family. We believe in the creation by Olorum, the power of Axé, and the Orixás.
Natlan, as of now, has two characters named Iansan and Ororon. These names come from not just the yoruba predecessors of candomblé, but also the religion itself, the Orixá deities Iansã and Olorum.
My religion, my deities. My mother's deities. The statuettes in my house. Their names are recycled cheaply to be used trivially. Never have we of candomblé ever gotten mentioned by AAA games or films that give such attention to detail like Genshin does, and we are disrespected. Our Gods are used like rags for someone's profit to be thrown away, washed out. They do not convey our beauty, our grit, our wonder, they do not convey us but they profit from us.
People love to tell us that it is just a game, but think again: games are not entitled to disrespect us just because of their nature. We are entitled to complain, to scream, because this is cruelty. You brutalize our image, butcher our names, for what?
When I was younger, I used to look at games with religious imagery very curiously. It was always weird to see the faith of the people I know be used for aesthetic reasons or just because it looks cool. The same has now happened to me, but times worse. People will say anything to justify this mockery and throw excuses to keep playing the product of a corporation that won't ever understand what it means to be us.
Boycott, complain, scream, because I will do it too. I regret the time I invested in playing, in reading, in watching, in dedicating myself to something that would never do me justice. It is not expensive to change a character's name, not even talking about the model. I don't plan on re-entering the fandom while it still lies unaware of the gross source material's true colors. Candomblé is not mythology, it's faith. We are alive. We have existed for centuries and will continue to grow, despite the challenges we face.
It's easy, and there are MULTIPLE things you can do! I recommend doing each item on this list.
1. SIGN & SHARE THE PETITION
The petition will be delivered to the appropriate cultural reps, in order to complain to the CCP about the negative impression this is leaving on Chinese companies. Genshin Impact is highly favoured by the government for the positive press it gives the country, and putting pressure on the 'big daddy' is FAR more likely to make Hoyoverse buckle.
As of right now, the petition has nearly 38k signatures.
2. EMAIL HOYOVERSE
Email them directly at [email protected] to state how this has affected your desire to continue playing their games.
3. USE THE IN-GAME SURVEY OR FEEDBACK
Genshin Impact has frequent update surveys, and there is a permanent option to give feedback at any time. You can find it in the Paimon Menu.
4. REVIEW BOMB
Rate Hoyoverse's games, particularly Genshin, with one star on the app store. This has already proven in the past to have an effect, when this caused the team to review the anniversary rewards.

5. POST IN OFFICIAL HOYOVERSE ACCOUNTS' COMMENTS
Do not be silent! Speak up about your displeasure. It's important that these comments outweigh the rest! Show that we are the MAJORITY.
DO NOT sent threats, to voice actors OR customer service staff.
DO NOT engage with trolls or racists. Block and report.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
It's easy to dismiss this in the face of 'more important' issues in the world at the moment, but Genshin Impact (And by extension, Hoyoverse) is a very influential game and company. It is extremely popular, and directly influences MANY other games and players through this popularity.
This isn't an issue of 'just stop playing'- This is not anger for a game's decisions, it's anger for a precedent. It's a demand that not only should Hoyoverse care about representation, but other, smaller, companies too. If Hoyoverse can get away with it, so can others- But if Hoyoverse is held accountable for their exploitation of culture, then it sets the precedent that other companies have no chance of doing the same.
Like it or not, Hoyoverse has a lot of influence, and the CCP itself values the company for giving China a positive image in other countries. This is bigger than just being mad at character design.
EDIT: It was also pointed out to me that if POC were to simply stop engaging with hostile content, they would have nothing left. 'Just stop playing' isn't fair, plain and simple. POC deserve to play the things that they enjoy WITHOUT being ostracized.
DOES HOYOVERSE LISTEN?
They listen if there's no money lining their pockets, they listen if their reputation is damaged, and they listen if the CCP gets involved. We have direct evidence of this.
Review bombing alone caused Hoyoverse to reconsider the first anniversary rewards.
The CCP forced Hoyoverse to reskin various characters to comply with their laws, which HYV did. (This isn't necessarily a good thing, however, it is still evidence that CCP has influence over them.)
This is by far the largest outcry the company has seen so far, and MANY of HYV's voice actors have spoken out in support for the movement as well. This is not just playerbase complaints, but staff, too.
I recommend following AvenOfStrats on X/Twitter for further updates on the petition's progress, and on other ways to contribute. They also share plenty of resources on why this is important, and guides on how to complain.
