Meet Leo Belgicus. Standing by the stairs to the entry of The Basilica of the Holy Blood, Leo proudly holds the Flemish Coat of Arms. His sentry position overlooks the Burg Square as it has done since the 12th century. As well as doing duty as the Coat of Arms holder, young Leo's lionlike figure is said to symbolise the Low Countries of the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium. He is indeed an lion of many talents. If it's there, it must be climbed. So of course the Belfort, or Belfry of Bruges, was ready to be tackled. There are only 366 steps to ascend the medieval bell tower. Standing at 83 metres it is one of the most prominent symbols of Bruges. Those who make the climb are rewarded with 360 degree views of the old town and surrounding countryside. And for a different aspect there are these little portholes that give a sneak peek of the Grote Markt. (at Belfort Brugge)

The Glendhu Bay track hugs the western shore of Lake Wanaka. Although popular with walkers and bike riders, it's easy to find solitude on the meandering path. Walking much further than anticipated is a risk as the track lures you into wanting to see what's around the next bend. (at Glendhu Track)

The shore of Lake Wakatipu offers plenty of places to just be in the moment. My spot was sitting on this jetty. 6 degrees Celsius and only the sound of the water lapping the shore and these views - yes please. (at Queenstown, New Zealand)

Queenstown hasn't just been about quiet moments taking in the glorious scenery from the secluded shores of pristine lakes or never-ending vistas from the top of the snow capped peaks. There is the other side that caters for adrenaline junkies. My not so extreme adventure was a jet boat ride roaring through the narrow canyons of the Shotover River. (at Skippers Canyon)

What's with the piles of stones that seem to be everywhere in New Zealand? After lots of googling I'm still no wiser. Whoever builds them must have a lot of patience as they aren't as easy as they look. I'd love to know if there is a story behind them. Any ideas? (at Queenstown, New Zealand)

At 450 metres above Queenstown the views from Bob's Peak span from Coronet Peak to the Remarkables across Lake Wakatipu. You can take the @skylinequeenstown gondola, the steepest in the Southern Hemisphere or hike up the Tiki Trail like I did. The view was worth the jelly legs. (at Queenstown, New Zealand)

Little Glenorchy has a lot going for it. It lays at the head of Lake Wakatipu and it is surrounded by snow capped mountains. Only 45kms from Queenstown, the drive along the shoreline is said to be one of the most beautiful in NZ. (at Glenorchy, New Zealand)

Lake Wakatipu is New Zealand's third largest lake. It is said to be a magical lake that has a heartbeat. The lake rises and falls about 20cm every 27 minutes. This is called a lake seiche or a standing wave. The mountains, wind and atmospheric pressure cause the lake to sway backwards and forwards. (at Lake Wakatipu)
