Lol one great moment in life =]
Final Stammering[Stuttering] Outcomes:-
Coursework Evaluation Piece
Course Work Evaluation:-
During the period of the AS Graphics Coursework I was instructed with many projects, from the Logo project to more professional briefs such the Stammering project. Each of which I think each had its own significant purpose, ie. The logo project was to develop our skills in creating logos and being able to produce several appropriate developments.
Taking into account all aspects of my coursework, including my final outcomes, experimentations, research, developments, artist analysis and the time spent on each project I think that the coursework for me was a huge success because I think I was able to achieve and complete the aims of each project, and also develop my skills and knowledge as a graphics designer.
In terms of my Logo Project I think that my most successful aspects were my research and final outcomes, however I think that if given more time I could have, should have, attempted to increase the amount of experimentations I carried out via using different colour themes, different fonts and any other different features/effects where appropriate. My research was very successful because I was able to search and annotate a total of 3 different logos for successful organizations, this was successful I believe because not only was I able to highlight the positives and negatives of each logo but I was also able to predict and link different things about each individual logo to how I could use them in the process of creating my own logos. In terms of my final outcome I think that this section of the Logo project was successful because not only were my final outcomes very attractive but also beccause I think they corformed to the important features that Logos should have. I also think that they were very successful because they were very appropriate to the subject of my logo organization. However despite being very attractive I think that to an extent I should have produce more simple and basic logos because within my research I learnt that the most successful logos are those which are simple because they can easily be manipulated to suit specific themes. But where being the first project in the course of the year the Logo project was not expected to extremely difficult or complex.
Secondly, my Self-Interaction project was a case of where I was to create developments and outcomes which involved some form interaction within the outcomes between myself and myself. Personally I believe that the main objectives for this project was to be focused on the quality of the outcome but the use and manipulation of two primary images. I believe that my most successful aspect of the project were my outcomes, this is because I was able to show a good interaction between my two models, myself. Despite being good quality, I do not think that the work I produced in this project would be suitable for real life context such as posters or advertising boards, not because they were not good enough in terms of quality but because they would not suit the different codes and conducts that posters and advertising boards involve, example; being very easy to see/read.
Thirdly, referring to the Stammering brief, my main aim(s) of the project was to be able to not only produce very attractive and appropriate outcomes but also to be able to achieve the different objectives within the brief. I also wanted to create outcomes that could be used in real like context, rather than being able to just produce attractive outcomes. In conclusion, I think that I was able to complete the brief very successfully, however still having areas that I could have improved if given more time. My most successful area besides my outcomes I think was being able to relate back to my Artist Analysis and being able to give reason to why I chose their styles and included them within my work. An area I think could have been improved, was my photography within this project. I think that choosing stuttering made it very difficult and limited them amount of photos that I could have taken, in comparison to the other briefs such as the 'Skateboarding/BMX Zine'. However I managed so I guess that was not such a problem.
In general I think that the AS Graphics Coursework was a very success for myself, due to the reason that not only was I able to produce very attractive and high quality outcomes but I was able to achieve the aims that each project was set. I think that my research for my coursework was in very depth and very useful because the information that I gathered from my research I was able to use in different areas further down the line in the coursework. Relating to my photography, I think strongly that the photos that I had taken were good enough for me to carry out the different projects and of good enough quality for me to manipulate them and use them to how I felt to, however despite being good enough I think that the problem within this section of my AS coursework was that the amount of photos taken by myself were very limited therefore the amount of primary imagery in my possession was very small and hence restricting the ideas or experiments that I could have carried out. In terms of developments and experiments I think that there was a clear understanding of why I carried out specific experiments or why I produced certain developments. If honest I think my own weakness in this area was that I could and should have expanded the different type of developments and experiments in my possession because much of my work was based on typography whereas I could also involved imagery which included just the manipulation of imagery, or more off-computer work using different mediums and materials very much like the style of Michelle Thompson.
Experimental Outcomes Via Primary Imagery
Artist Analysis | Brock Davis | Visual Response
As part of my Artist Analysis I went on to produce a visual response to me second selected artist Brock Davis . In this visual response I would have to plan and produce my own methods to my own outcomes based on Brock's style, due to not knowing exactly how he created his own outcomes. And so I used a combination of work on this computer and my own limited art skills, as you will go on to see.
Original/Initial Development:-
In this development, using the computer, I generated simple letter 'S' representing Stammering/Stuttering. Although in his own style Brock Davis had used a very simple font with just an 'A', I decided to incorporate my own skills in typography via introducing a small use of brushes that I had found alongside a small text at the top of my development to give my main image some context and meaning.
Development Outcomes [Via Off-Computer Skills & Tools]
1st Off-Computer Outcome.
2nd Off-Computer Outcome.
3rd Off-Computer Outcome.
After producing my main image on Photoshop I then went to print my main image on a plain sheet of A4 paper. Subsequent to this I then worked off the computer, using a very sharp scalpel, a ruler and a pen to produce my outcomes in the photos above. Using my scalpel and ruler I cut in the strips you see above. I didn't not want my strips to be off equal length like those in the style of Brock Davis, this for the reason that within my research on stammering I learnt that stuttering doesn't happen in a pattern or rhythm, however it occurs more spontaneously then expectingly and so I thought that I could represent this fact through the different sizes of strips; having a mixture of thin and thick. Influenced by Brock Davis I then use a simple Black Ink Pen to produce the curls of the strips. These curls, just like the different sizes of strips were no randomly done, but I curled the strips because I thought that they would represent the clashing and twists in the speech of those who suffered from stammering(stuttering).
My first outcome, in the series of photos above was my initial outcome after producing the strips and curls. However I decided to develop this outcome to the second outcome where I decided to place down some of the strips that I had curled to experiment and see what outcomes I could produce and to also make the letter 'S' more clearer to the viewer.
My final photo was produced because I spontaneously came up with the idea to cut, suing my scalpel, around a section of my 'S' and to curl it so it would come out of the paper. I decided to carry out this thought because, again using my research I discovered that stammering causing involuntary words that may come out when talking or pauses and prolongations, and so I decided to represent this via allowing part, not all, of my 'S' come out of the image.
Third Development [Via On-Computer Skills & Tools]:-
I had already finished my Artist Analysis - Visual Response on artist Brock Davis, however I wanted to go further and develop his still further to be able to manipulate it and combine it with my own style and skills. Hence I transferred the photos I had taken onto the computer where I then used the skills I had acquired in the 'Layer & Brush Manipulation' project to create my 3rd Development, using a Pin Light layer style for the photo I had previously taken. Here I then applied a small use of text and the logo I had previously made to make it more relevant to the brief of creating a series of posters.
Fourth Development [Via On-Computer Skills & Tools]:-
Subsequent to my previous outcome I decided to attempt to add some sort of colour or texture to my previous development to attempt to make it look some sort of more attractive. I created an extra blank white layer in which I turned it into a layer full of squares through using a texture feature in Photoshop. Then again using my layer manipulation skills I had learned I gave it an Overlay Layer Style so that you could see the 'S' and the strips I had made. However I feel this wasn't very successful because although I experimented with different layer styles I could ensure that the fines of the strips could be seen and more clearer or any more visible than they are in the development above.
Final Development Outcome:
I then created my final development in response to my artist analysis via adding shapes that I created in Illustrator using the rotation tool to create each of them.
This is my final development towards my Visual Response to the style and work of Brock Davis. Despite the fact that mu current design does not resemble or appear to be influenced much by the artists work I think that this is because I have have on to development my original outcome which is very influenced by my artists work.
Experimental Outcome [Via Original/Initial Development]
I really like my Original/Initial development that I had created in order to complete my Visual Response for Brock Davis, therefore using my skills gathered in creating my visuals for Sam Winston I went on to use a combination of the two to create experimental but very successful outcomes relating to my stammering posters. Using Winston's style of falling text/letters I did the same thing to represent how being effected by stammering(stammering) may cause individuals to feel like, at times. speech may fall out their mouths involuntary when speaking. In order to make the fall in letters effetive tool I manipulated the opacity % level so that I could recieve different tones of black and white, making some letters bolder than others. I also literally had reated some letters beiiger than other via different font sizes. The selection of which words were bigger than others was made randomly according to how effective they were.
Artist Analysis | Brock Davis | Written Resonse
Brock Davis, currently living within Minneapolis is out of his many professions a Graphics Illustrator. Brock Davis produces contemporary art via the use of working for many different clients including Sabura and also editorial work for New York Times and many other huge companies. Brock Davis has been involved in many publications and awards for his work.
I decided to look at the work produced by Brock Davis because as an illustrator, a huge amount of his work has involved manipulating and working solely with typography. Hence why I decided to choose him as an artist to study because I thought that as a speaking disorder stammering/stuttering had many relations so typography and also because the usage of typography could represent more the different ideas and facts about stammering, that other styles of designing could represent. I also chose to study the work of Brock Davis because I admired the fact that he has been able to produce work of the computer and the fact that his work is very simple and yet very effective and meaningful. I strongly think that Brock Davis' use of typography could be very useful and appropriate in the stages of the Stammering project.
Despite a huge amount of his work being based on computers, Davis has also gone off the computer to produce what I think some of his best work, such as the example above. Off computers Davis has gone on to use natural resources such as plants and foods, which I think isn't exactly something that I could use but is an influence to me to not rely on my skills on the computer and try to use the natural things around me. In terms of his composition I think that Brock Davis really prefers to keep his work central, in the position where every detail of each piece of work can clearly be seen without there having t be any struggle to find anything that he would have wanted to be seen easily. Referring to his use of colour, I think the work of Brock Davis is very reserved, in the terms that the amount of colour he uses is very limited; there isn't anything that is exaggerated and flooded with colour. This use of colour I think would work well with my brief because as a poster I need to insure that my usage of colour is not excess so that the important features of my posters are easily seen by the audience and stand out, but without being too bright and unpleasant to the eye.
In terms of cultural references, being a modern Contemporary designer much of Brock Davis work is produced for clients and events rather than to relate to any eras or cultural aspects. However I have noticed that all his work is like him very modern, this can be said because his use of colours despite being very limited doesn't represent any sort of odd stages in time, and also the sort of images and components in his work are not futuristic at all. Therefore only allowing it to be modern and being produced for the current generation to enjoy.
Brock Davis' work is very simple but yet very attractive and effective, I think that the fact that his work is very simple would allow a huge amount of opportunity for me to use a combination of his own art style alongside with similar illustrators such as Sam Winston and also be able to incorporate my own style of work whilst still having the norms or his own art style.
Artist Analysis | Sam Winston | Experimental
Following my previous Visual Response to the artist Sam Winston I decided to carry out a series of experimental influenced by the style of Sam Winston based on the other forms of work he has produced. I did not make a huge amount of experimental work but I carried out a small series of developments to see if I could produce any ideas or outcomes that could become of some use to me in later stages of the brief.
Initial Development:
1st Development:-
2nd Development:-
Alternative Outome:-
Artist Analysis | Sam Winston | Visual Response
In response to my Written Analysis on the artist Sam Winston, I went on to produce a visual response to reflect; not only the research that I carried out on him but also to produce developments and outcomes in the artists style, which I could possibly go on and use in further outcome or work that I decided to produce.
Original Response:-
In order to produce this initial outcome I used both programs Photoshop and Illustrator. This use of both programs was because within Illustrator I used the pen tool to produce the shapes that you see below, it were not possible to produce the shapes within Photoshop because of the long amount of time and complexity of trying to produce such simple shapes. After dragging each shape individually into Photoshop, one of the skills which I learnt during the Vector Shadows Project. I then, using the skills I learnt during the Layer & Brush Manipulation project to copy the shapes in to new layers where they were full of text. I did this so that each shape was filled with different fonts and different font sizes so that it would allow my outcome to look more attractive, this was also done because I thought that the different texts and different shapes would represent the different cases and problems that individuals struggling with stammering/stuttering face on an everyday bases.
1st Development [Use of Brushes]:-
Within this development I decided to go ahead and produce a background made of brushes, that I created within Photoshop. I decided to go and create this background because I felt that my original outcome was too simple and lacked any complexity, even though it was very influenced by artist style which can been seen in my developments and it was justifiable in terms of being a good Visual Analysis of Sam Winston's artist style, it needed to be developed further, hence the decision to produce a background. I decided to maintain a simple colour theme of Black & White because in my Artist Analysis I discovered that my artist did not use a wide range of colours but instead he produced his work with the usage simple colours.
2nd Development [Application towards Brief]:-
3rd Development [Change in Fonts & Further usage of Brushes]:-
4th Development [Use of Imagery & Layers]:-
Evaluation:-
Artist Analysis | Sam Winston | Written Analysis
Sam Winston is a famous typographer known for his usage and manipulations of language to form different pieces of work.
Final Logo Outcome:
Stammering[Stuttering] Logo Production Stage Final
As well as producing my own individual logos to replace the current BSA logo, I decided to produce developments of the BSA's original logo to see if I could produce more appropriate and better quality logos. I decided to do this because instead of producing a brand new logo which individuals would not recognize I could develop logos that are of better quality and standard but still recognizable to the appropriate target audience.
Original Development:-
I began with recreating the central image of the logo in illustrator with the usage of the pen tool, this image would be the foundation of any developments or experimentation that I produced.
1st Development [Use of noise]:-
Using my previous work as a guideline, I used the skills I learned in my Vector Shadows to add a simple noise to the logo and see the outcome. The use of noise I think made the logo slightly more attractive but I think it reduced the contrast between the two colors used, making the logo stand out less. So I decided to go onto further experimentation via using textures and patterns.
2nd Development - [Use of textures and shadows]:-
In developing the logo, I have decided to use the patterns and texture in different parts of the logo - meaning in the red section of the logo I decided to use the pattern of squares where I made the opacity quite low so the logo could remain simple but still attractive. In the blue shape I decided to use the texture which I maintained the opacity at 100%. This decision remained randomly as it was influenced from my work in the Vector Shadows. However I decided to use a small shadow feature in the both images to make my logo less flat and more 3D.
Final Development [Combination of developments and Use of text]:-
Stammering[Stuttering] Logo Production Stage No.1
Stammering[Stuttering] Logo Production
Stammering[Stuttering] Logo Introduction
Stammering[Stuttering] Logo Introduction
During my Stammering[Stuttering] research I stumbled across the BSA(British Stammering Association) organisation logo which I thought and decided to development/improve or completely change. Reasons for this are simply because I believed that the Logo did not fit the basic important criteria that organisation logos should fit and satisfy.
Altough being simple and to an extent attractive I felt that could produce a better series of logos from which I will select one to replace or become an additional organisation logo for the BSA.

What are Zines?
-Definition
A zine (an abbreviation of fanzine or magazine) is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier.
Research | Skateboarding/BMX
What is Skateboarding/BMX
-Definition
Skateboarding is an action sport which involves riding and performing tricks using a skateboard. Skateboarding can also be considered a recreational activity, an art form, a job, or a method of transportation.[1] Skateboarding has been shaped and influenced by many skateboarders throughout the years. A 2002 report found that there were 18.5 million skateboarders in the world. 85% of skateboarders polled who had used a board in the last year were under the age of 18, and 74% were male.[2]
Skateboarding is relatively modern. Since the 1970s, skateparks have been constructed specifically for use by skateboarders, bikers and inline skaters.
According to research I was able to learn that skateboarding originated in the State of California, America. Where surfers were unable to surf due to 'flat' waves. And they developed the idea of Surf boards so that they could surf on the surface which developed the name 'Sidewalk Surfing'. However with the development of skateboarding came the stereotypes of skaters as 'rebellious non-conforming youth' and that the was a huge positive correlation between increase in knife and drug activity and skateboard populated areas. However this image has faded over the decades. Yet even there being a fade in the image of skateboarder as rebellious and non-conforming i the public, there is still arguments within the media where magazines such as Thrasher represent skateboarders as dirty and uncivilised, whereas other magazines give a more controlled and civilised image of skateboarding via its use in music videos, becoming a sport and its use in other cultures such as Hip hop and R&B music videos.
Skateboarding has also gone on to be used in areas such as Military and transport however this has opened to more arguments such safety.
In conclusion to the research that I have found I was able to see that even though the negative images upon skateboarders has faded, in different areas on the world and the media there are still conflicts between the approval of skateboarders and their influences upon other aspects within the media and cultures such as the Hip Hop industry. I have also learnt of the development of Skateboarding from its origins in California to hosting Olympics events and worldwide national competitions.
Research | Stammering[Stuttering] | Posters
What are posters?
Definition
A poster is any piece of printed paper designed to be attached to a wall or vertical surface. Typically posters include both textual and graphic elements, although a poster may be either wholly graphical or wholly text. Posters are designed to be both eye-catching and informative. Posters may be used for many purposes.
Analysis of Posters:
Barack Obama 'Hope' Poster-
This poster is the famous 'Barack Obama 'Hope' Poster' which was designed with the purpose of Barack Obama gaining as much votes as possible through advertising his participation as a candidate for The President Of The United States. The poster contains very small amount of text however the colours have been specifically chosen for many reasons. The colours represent America, which can clearly be seen, however they have used to represent Barack Obama as america, in the sense of being someone who not only understands what it is to be American, but also someone who considers himself to be or have at least one thing in common with every American within the USA.
This is a poster which I have chose to analyse because it is more specific and relevant to the brief that I have chosen to carry out. The poster above is a poster which was created by The BSA (The British Stammering Association). One positive about this poster is that it has a clear and simple colour theme, which allows it to be easier to follow and understand.
Completing my research I was able to understand clearer what it is to have created a successful. This is through analysing the idea and definition of a poster, as well as analysing successful and popular posters from the past. I can use this information I have gathered and allocate it towards the creation my own posters and hopefully create good quality outcomes and developments. The poster was mass produced which meant that it were probably limited in the terms of its complexity and amount. Having to advertise Obama the designer of the poster made obama the subject of the poster by clearly making him the biggest component of the page as well as making it easier to see and eye catching the poster uses on word which has ben made bold and clear for the meaning of the poster to be easily remembered.
