The Things They Carried

They carried all the emotional baggage of men who might die. Grief, terror, love, longing-these were intangibles, but the intangibles had their own mass and specific gravity, they had tangible weight, things we'd feel. I felt the weight of her hair falling on my shoulders as we slept under the docks, and the pull of my boots dragging me into tomorrow and days after that. I felt every weapon attached to me shake with every step I took upon these grounds, and the electric shock that ran down my spine the first time I held her hand. I felt everything and nothing. The world, this war, and every one of my men could've crashed down on top of me, pinning me to the dry desolate land we marched, and I would feel nothing. She would so much as look into my eyes and see nothing but a man with a beating heart just like hers, and I would feel everything.
