milky way of lilium japonicum - flickr 2013
As astronomer and Yerkes staff member William Morgan was working to help discover the spiral arms of the Milky Way, he used a styrofoam board and some pins to map out stars and create a 3D model. He received a standing ovation for his findings after presenting his work at the American Astronomical Society meeting in December 1951. Although the model is no longer at Yerkes, photographs of it were recently discovered in the building.

Two combined nocturnals, sundials and lunar volvelles, by Linge de Foy, 16th century
This navigation tool was used to calculate time at night. Similar to an astrolabe or a sundial clock. A pointer, much like a hand on a clock, determines the time at night based on the position of the North Star in relation to another constellation, such as Ursa Minor (the Little Dipper).

Rock cut tomb, possibly Early Christian or Byzantine. A large number of rock cut tombs were carved out at the top of the Ancient Greek Theater. (I went looking for more info. Even Italian sources failed me.)
