Feb. 22nd: Midterm Review

Long time no talk! I just completed my midterm review for the spring semester and have a few mixed feelings. At this stage in my thesis I have begun to work on site application of my abstract models. Although, after my review, I’m not sure that he direction I am headed in is the best....

I began with making these extremely emotional models and graphics that told a story in the landscape. I have since then steered away from conveying that story and more towards.

Basically during my review Valerie, along with some new reviewers reaction was a little something like this:

They were shocked to see that I had moved away from such a powerful message to one that was so site design focused and had little to nothing to do with that emotional aspect.

At this point I’m not exactly sure where I want to go with this design. Should I take a few steps back and really see if I am missing any important opportunities

Some of the notes I took include:

Reflection 07: This iteration was the last of the series, I used a combination of more plaster and cotton as well as exposing more wire than I had for any others. The

Reflection 06: In this iteration I increased the amount of cotton and allowed for more exposure from the wire, showcasing the rusting process. The touch sensations I receive from this are uncomfortable, dry, dusty, sharp, vulnerable, undulating, bumpy, tangled, uneven, coarse, smooth

Reflection_05: This iteration includes a style that uses only cotton and places it upon a wooden wall. This style leaves the raw cotton completely exposed. Haptic description can be stated as soft, fluffy, undulating, sharp, layered, fuzzy. This experiment is interesting in the fact that it allows for a haptic experience of cotton in a completely raw fashion, which thus allows for a true understanding of what the cotton alone feels like “haptically”.

Reflection_04: This iteration was quite similar to the last reflection, but with the addition of more cotton and less wire exposure, this has led to the haptic description of: loose, rough, fragile, crumbling, sharp, uneven, chunky, dense, coarse, messy, soft & thorny. The addition of cotton and more exposed stems and leaves combined with less plaster cover caused the iteration to have a more fragile state and caused a lot more crumbling to occur upon touch.

Reflection_03: This iteration can be described as very much coarse, bulbous, smooth, soft, delicate, netted, bare (at moments), abrasive, tangled, fragile, sharp, piece-y & chunky.

Reflection_02: This is the second iteration I developed. The combination of wire, unprocessed cotton & plaster in this small scale give me a haptic experience of smooth, softness, crumbling, sharp, moments of unevenness, slippery, bumpy & bulgy.

Reflection_01: This iteration was the first one. As I rub my hands across this plaster model the textural descriptors that come to my mind are: rough, dry, lumpy, coarse, grooved, crumbly, abrasive & uneven. The piling of the cotton and plaster together have helped to create this touch sensation. Translating this into the landscape would be interesting, possibly through the use of textural plants or ground plane materials along a path. The main objective of these reflections is to allow myself to look at each of these iterations in a strictly haptic style so that I can use what I learn and translate it into the landscape.

This iteration focused on using cotton and plaster together to form organic and abstract forms. This experimentation allowed me to not only have lots of messy fun, but also to find ways to intrigue my audience. From a distance, the material does not appear to be cotton, but once you use your hands and eyes to explore it, you realize that this hard shell is covering a soft piece of cotton. With mid-term presentations next week, I’m working hard towards producing and uncovering better methods to creating haptic experiences with this material combination.

Another set of explorations that I have produced has been one with copper! The copper material was very flexible to work with, as it is extremely malleable, allowing me to create textures. Several of the textures were produced by hammering the material against concrete or rough cut stone. The last image was created through the use of bending the material back and forth several times, creating deep creases.

Experimenting with making leather appear worn to express the historical experience of slaves during cotton picking. Leather is a material associated with heat (especially black leather). It also begins to show an emotional experience with the worn texture as well as the torn one.

Back at it again....

Sorry I haven’t been updating lately. I’ve been doing a lot of material explorations with materials like cotton, leather, copper and plaster :D My next post will showcase some of the iterations I have been producing over the past few weeks.
