i dont think people really understand this

not being cis and/or hetero isnt a new “trend”

its the fact that cis and hetero has been the only thing thats shown and acceptable for such a long time that people literally automatically assume that everyones cis/hetero

and its so normalized that seeing anything other than that outside of a mention of it once every blue moon is shocking and honestly thats why things are changing??? because that mindset needs to fucking go tbh

its not a “trend”. its always been there??? its just literally been blatantly ignored and pushed away for so long that it seems like one to people with that mindset.

YES. I think above all, THIS is what society needs to open its eyes too. To trans, to gender nonconforming, to sex work, to ANYTHING underrepresented. We are so consumed by our own media that we don’t realize its the primary informer for all things social. Even the slightest change of skin color, nationality, gender, sexuality can open someone’s eyes to something they’ve never seen before. 

I don’t think anyone would argue that the media has always been hetero, male, white, dominated, so why would they argue that that hasn’t skewed our view on all the different types of people who coexist in our world? If “timelessless” is one of the main players in social misunderstanding, neglect is certainly his brother. They are detrimental and lead to the creation of excuses for as to why people are uncomfortable with sex, with black people, with transgender people, with drag queens, with pride parades, with identity itself. 

Awareness and identity creation are the first steps to social change. People need to understand that the issue exists before they can even form an opinion. So I encourage people to share their opinions, share who you are, share who you like, share who you love, share who you fuck, share if you don’t fuck or don’t love. Share so that others know who you are.

Last Prompt of the year!

In “Gay Imperialism”, Haritaworn, Tauqir and Erdem talk about the integration project of civilizing “homophobic immigrants” (14). What is this project of integration? How does this affect LGBT Muslims, according to the authors?

(Please note this is the LAST Tumblr prompt for the course.)

In all honesty what I took out of this piece is that not only “muslim” but really any religion is synonomous to homophobic. I think this is an interesting phenomenon that has affected the way that this next generation thinks of religion. Many young adults have decided not to follow a specific religion because of this reason and being affiliated with a group.

I find rather that it might be more effective to work from inside the corrupt society and change minds that way. Which I have seen already. If you look at Christianity at an individual level, many Christians are supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. Yes, there will always be the vocal morons of a religion that keep badgering away being jerks and oppressing other communities, but the silent majority ignore those people because they have lost the motivation to stand up and talk about what they really think. Now that is Christianity and that is different than Islam. If you look at Islam it too has been contorted into a religion of hatred, as any religion can be. 

The current situation with Islam is that the religious texts are very clear on homosexuality and condemn it. This basically as with everyone other religion, condemns and erases the existence of the LGBTQ+ individuals that follow that religion. This erasure creates a world of purgatory and non existence and abuse that we see when extremists get ahold of people that they condemn. Note these are EXTREMISTS that do this and not rational individuals whom value human life.

Week 11

Massad focuses on the differences in culture in terms of how homosexuality is accepted. The main argument of the piece is that Middle Eastern Culture is much more condemning of homosexuality and therefore is more homophobic. I definitely think that this is reinforced by the Westernized Christian aspects in the USA. The homophobic ideals that are ever quoted from any religious manuscript are misconstrued in a way that makes them about the essential survival of a people.

I think this is a very on point comment in terms of racialization. This makes me think about my boyfriend and myself. We are in a interracial relationship. His parents are also an interracial couple and watching how they are treated by people in society mirrors the way we are. I constantly get asked if he treats me well because he is Colombian and people wonder about the machismo. Machismo is acting as a dominant man, always right,do this, do that yada yada. It shocked me the first because it never crossed my mind that he would ever treat me differently than I have been treated in relationships. The idea that because of his cultural identity he is considered to be lesser of a respectable man is ridiculous. The whole idea that just because the skin color or culture is different makes someone a different “grade” of appealing is unfortunate. I guess racialization just makes me think about how we haven’t changed that much if at all since the Civil rights movement and Jim Crow Laws. Being anything except white makes you less desirable. Unless you are fetishized. Fetishizing people of color turns them into objects and essentially dehumanizes and hurts all people, once we dehumanize one group the rest of humanity is right behind.
