The Atacama Desert in Chile is the most arid non-polar region in the world. Evidence suggests it may have received no significant rainfall for a 400 year period from 1570 to 1971, and many weather stations placed there have never seen rain. Scientists believe it may be the oldest desert on earth.

Matera is a city and a province in Basilicata, Southern Italy. The town lies in a small canyon carved out by the Gravina. Known as “la Città Sotterranea” (the Subterranean City), Matera is well known for its historical center called “Sassi”, considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1993, along with the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. In 2014, Matera was declared the Italian host of “European Capital of Culture” for 2019.
