if you’re confused right now i’ll just ask you to consider: if this story had broken about any other content creator. not even in the mcyt sphere if this had come out about someone you didn’t even KNOW. would you feel the same sense of obligation to defend a man with a platform of millions engaging in flirtatious conversation (at best) and grooming (at worst) with a younger female fan. i’m not telling you how to feel but this puts it in the most objective context and i’m sorry but even if down the line some parts of amanda’s story are disproven there is no taking back how disgusting this entire situation is. content creators must maintain some semblance of boundaries with their fans, and dream failed to do that. period.

Actually all arguments about Dream being bad because he was conservative as a teenager are cancelled.

He was raised a moderately wealthy white boy in Florida. His family was republican and he was raised with their beliefs. He was kept off of most social medias and did not have a phone until he was about 18. He was on online school for most of high school and spent his time playing Minecraft.

This was not a man who lived in an environment where he had to question his parents beliefs. But he did. Dream saw he had a massive audience of LGBT+, POC, women, kids from everywhere and he changed his mind on the ideals he was taught. He saw how many people from all over from all sorts of backgrounds watched him and decided he actually would support them. Dream would call himself a Liberal now and he keeps watching Hasan a socialist political commentator.

Also has anyone heard this dude talk recently? Dream was disgusted yesterday by the waste of wealth that comes from the person who cancelled on the trip to space. Dream consistently donates to charity from things he’s mentioned here and there. He donated a lot of money to the Trevor Project. He once mentioned an idea of opening up a home for LGBT+ youth. Like Dream is absolutely not a conservative.

And as well he stated he never supported Trump, he always thought he was dumb and a joke. Also he never voted for him seeing as in 2016 he was 17 and in 2020 he’d already changed his political beliefs which never aligned with Trump anyways. That is also absolutely the goal real political activists have in mind by the way. If everyone was as willing and open to change as Dream things would be a lot better in this world.

As well telling someone who was raised to be racist, xenophobic, sexist, homophobic, etc that they can never grow from this and they are inherently awful for ever having those beliefs is reductive as hell. Congrats if you were raised in a welcoming liberal environment where you were taught to respect everyone and how to be PC all of the time. But many of us weren’t and this can’t be an expected norm. It’s a privilege to grow up in an environment like that.

So let’s not hold it against Dream that he was raised with specific beliefs. I think what’s infinitely more important is that he’s been an adult that can vote for what four/five years? And his political beliefs have swung wildly to the left and he’s clearly very social progressive and active with charities. That feels a lot more important than what he thought when he was seventeen and living under his parents’ roof.

To continue this. Dream was a boy scout he was in the junior ROTC. He’s exactly the type of kid to be pushed to the military and right wing thinking.

Yet he rejects and openly mocks that. He makes fun of the rotc and he made fun of the military on Veterans Day no less.

Dream is the prime example of why education is important because political beliefs can always be changed if people are just given the recourses to do it.

Okay but doesn’t Dream still actively say racist shit and foster an incredibly racist community? Like yeah this is a good message about education and giving people the chance to grow but are we thinking of the same Dream here? Is this not the guy who continues to say insanely bigoted shit and then try to say it’s not his fault because he has like, ADHD or whatever?

Like it would be one thing if all the shit people were calling him out for was 100% in the past but as far as I know he continues to be bigoted. So like. I’m just confused.

this is literally the furthest possible thing from the truth. in fact his community has been called out for being overly aggressively liberal calling out any perceived problematic thing without pausing to think about what they’re saying (such as internal biases making them think something was offensive when it wasn’t) the dsmp fandom is one of the most socially and politically progressive fandoms out there it’s literally known for changing the gaming sphere which is traditionally racist, sexist, homophobic etc

anything dream has said or done has not been recent and he’s been called out for them, apologized, and changed his behaviors. as well nothing he’s said or done as been malicious in intent it’s literally him just not knowing for example something he said was aave. and he’s shown to be very courteous of aave asking people if something is etc. he’s very open to learning. he’s so sheltered he didn’t even know what a binder was until a fan explained it to give some perspective. in his apologies his main concern is always that he’s hurt fans and possibly spoken over them which he never meant to do

dream is very supportive and he’s never blamed anything let alone an insensitive joke or statement on his adhd. he is one of the more politically active ccs in his sphere as well. actively donating and promoting to blm charities, trying to give black fans a place to talk on Juneteenth, wishing fans a happy ramadan (not to praise something so simple but I have never heard that from a gamer before), raising lots of money for LGBT charities, wishing his indigenous fans and happy indigenous peoples’ day. things he’s not like required to do he’s literally a minecrafter most don’t but he does these things because he cares.

he does not continue to be bigoted and he’s shown immense growth. like he would not have such a diverse fanbase if he was a bigot.

all these absolutely horrendous people actively and wholeheartedly spreading bigoted ideologies and people choose to hate and harass a 23 year old man who got famous a few years back for minecraft videos, then got dogpiled and had his teenage, uninformed beliefs that he has not agreed with for years brought up by people who hate him and used as an excuse to doxx him and threaten his life. this man has a fanbase comprised of a huge amount of poc, women and queer people and has been actively and outspokenly left, but that doesn’t matter because it was never about politics or bigotry. it was always about having an excuse to be absolutely vile, having a politically correct reason to hate someone because then of course you don’t have to examine your own morals, you can live in an echo chamber that says you’re right and definitely not emulating the behaviour of the people you so despise

My dudes when I was 18 I proudly voted for George W. Bush in the 2008 election. I was against same-sex marriage, I was pro-life, i was a ‘good christian girl’ with a boyfriend who was probably going to get married and (try to) have a lot of babies.

By the time I was 23 I was solidly excessively queer and liberal, having finally experienced views and perspectives from outside the community I grew up in being held by people I cared about and realizing that I actually agreed with them.

If he was still believing the same things then that’s an issue, but in that case you wouldn’t need to dig up shit from his teens to find enough to “justify” dogpiling him.

also just the general way it rubs wrong to blame someone for being raised conservative and growing up in circles that further solidify it, especially for a queer man which this HURT him, he had internalized homophobia he had to unpack for years BECAUSE fostering a space for lgbtq+ people in his fanbase let him explore that–that doesn’t excuse any other form of taking a swing at marginalized communities, but to genuinely fault someone for just, not being taught something is ridiculous

people forget that we live in a country where half the population is republican! HALF THE COUNTRY raises their kids with those beliefs in mind, that’s how it continues, and it’s also why republicans are trying to push out education programs that would oppose their ideology! their power is tantamount on the upbringing of conservatives and the echo chamber. I’ve had many friends who were raised liberal sure–but I also have a solid chunk who are various minorities, disabled, queer, poc, all of the above, who thought in a far-right leaning way and had to find a means out of the pipeline. do you think it sends a good message to anyone caught in the pipeline, minority or otherwise, to cyberstalk their history and scrutinize it with a microscope despite how much they show that’s not them anymore?

also my least favorite phrase “should’ve known better” like no! without someone next to you explaining why something is wrong, you physically can’t know better. these are learned behaviors, to unlearn them, you gotta learn new things. being in a conservative bubble means you don’t. and it feels a tad bit like a privilege to flaunt the luck that you had to be born into a “progressive” family (a liberal one, but actually liberals can be bigoted too. we live in a bigoted society that raises people to be bigoted what a shocker)

ultimately it just takes the focus off GENUINE fascists, it sends the message to those falling down the alt-right pipeline that leftists don’t think you can learn and you’ll always be scrutinized, and it targets a queer neurodivergent man for things he just isn’t. and it’s not a coincidence this is against the LARGEST lgbtq+ youtuber–the main perpetuators of rumors like these are k/w/ farms and also alt-right enjoyers of gross slur slinging dudebros who want to say to any dream fan calling out rightfully awful behavior with “see, he’s just as bad actually!” it’s blatant whataboutism to distract from genuinely awful people and you took the bait so hard even though dream has served to donate and boost BLM and lgbtq+ charities and he is a genuine role model for boys–boys looking up to a queer, mentally disabled man who actively opposes bigotry.

to everyone talking about their experiences being conservative and having bigoted beliefs in the past and growing and unlearning it and moving past it i love you and i’m proud of you because that is not easy. you can’t take back what you thought or any actions you took because of it but you made the effort to grow as a person and do better and i admire you for that
