Mama's boy
Hey, hey, breathe... Look at me.... This is all your fault, okay?
important Character traits:
paranoia
control freakism
sense of self-worth so low that it loops back around into being totally dismissive of everyone else
a warm-hearted kind center beneath 200 protective walls of bitterness that doesn't actually make the bitterness better in any way at all even a little bit
bisexuality
crushing feelings of responsibility
zero understanding of own bodily autonomy that bleeds out and affects how they treat others
a lil petty vindictive sadism they maybe don't wanna look at too hard or acknowledge
full self-awareness of all their most negative traits without working to fix those traits at all
internalized misogyny
a mysterious undefinable hunger that cannot / should not / must not ever be sated
asexuality
I love you Jupiter forever and ever
everyone's always like "the media from my childhood that isn't good on revisit" but no one talks about the media from your childhood that IS actually that good and on revisit and you're like oh fuck oh shit that was masterful in technical ways i was too young to grasp but which still affected me nonetheless. and that explains why you're so prone to haterism. sorry they showed me the real good stuff first so i assumed all of the following stuff i experienced would be equally resonant. as if it's my fault
A woman whose epilepsy was greatly improved by an experimental brain implant was devastated when she was forced to have it removed.
A woman whose epilepsy was greatly improved by an experimental brain implant was devastated when, just two years after getting it, she was forced to have it removed due to the company that made it going bankrupt.
Specifically, because she couldn't afford to buy the implant from the company. They basically took her implant back to recoup their losses. This is what happens when you privatize healthcare and health research. The group providing her with this implant should not have been able to go bankrupt in the first place, let alone repossess her implant to pay off their debts.
This is what disabled people mean when we say that cyberpunk horror is just a reality for us. This woman was literally forced to undergo a surgery because she couldn't pay to keep the implant already inside her brain. How long till companies start repossessing pacemakers and transplants?
I seem to recall a musical about this. Starring Anthony Stewart Head.
so that's not quite what happened- they wouldn't let her buy the implant outright, it sounds like from reading her quotes in the paper about her story
she offered to, but never actually was allowed to even try- the article says she remortgaged her house, but the actual direct quote says "we WOULD HAVE remortgaged the house" and later, "I WOULD'VE paid money." it's still horrific, but in a different way: it's not that she didn't have enough money; it's that she wasn't allowed to even find out if she did. they never gave her the option to buy it. it was always treated as the company's property regardless of her ability to pay or not
like I said! still horrific! still should not happen! but it was not "she couldn't pay, so they took her implant"
(also I'm seeing some commentary that the implant wasn't designed to last indefinitely since it was a trial? so that may be a complicating factor, too? but that's not mentioned in the journal article as far as I saw, so I'm not sure what the source on that is)
The one flaw of the Insignia series: needed more Walton Covner in it.
DERANGED PROTAGONISTS!
Here, take this meme that exactly one (1) other person will understand
why are cyberpunk tabletop things so obsessed with decency and personhood being tied to how many surgeries you haven’t had
“if you have a prosthetic it takes out a part of your soul” like thanks shadowrun
in early cyberpunk, the point was more along the lines of “if we integrate technology into our bodies we risk becoming dependent upon the people and institutions who control that technology, who would then use that to enrich themselves at our expense”
unfortunately that was too anti-corporate for American mainstream culture so as cyberpunk moved out of its niche it became “uhhh it eats your soul I guess”

#this is important context #if you weren’t around at the time it is easy to miss but #anti-corporate sentiment was pretty much the lynchpin of cyberpunk until there were movies and games making money off it #it was the 1980s you guys #the entire point was that corporations are evil and technology should be used to circumvent them and escape their control over our lives #and not be used to make ourselves into another product #now that the internet is entirely monetized and corporate it’s harder to remember that originally it was synonymous w freedom & independence
Yes, exactly. Cyberpunk is anti-corporations, not anti-body-modification.
#the real horror is medical debt ( tag via @bronanlynch )
I love characters who become just like their mother (horror)
mutuals if I was a vampire would you let me have a sip be honest 🥺
Recently watched a video on the unabomber and there's some stuff that I just think are very Blackburn coded
When Blackburn decided to hijack a teenagers mind, partly because said teenager is too stupid for his own good and doesn’t understand that he needs to stop flaunting abilities that very powerful would do horrible things to control. But also partly because it’s the perfect way to steal said teenager’s half-assed acts of terrorism and turn them into full-assed acts of terrorism.
Tom (fifteen, has only just started growing a political consciousness): I need to make a statement that will attract everyone’s attention in the world and show them that I disagree with the people in power and I have a great way to do it, I’m going to destroy all the sky advertisement boards that literally everyone hates except the people making money off them. This will both send a message and make the world a slightly better place for all the ordinary people who live in it. As a bonus point it will also help protect the girl I like (who’s going to be super pissed at me soon but it’s fine). I feel good about this on all sides :)
Blackburn (forty, jaded, hatred towards the government is basically the only emotion he has left): this idiot isn’t even willing to kill people
Was scrolling through AO3 and found this gem
Enemy to parent is a trope we have to popularise lmao
I'm doing my part here
