Halfway through my elective rotation! I already ticked off all the required specimens I had to cut and sign out for the whole month, so I only have a presentation and an exam left. Time to prepare for that exam then!
My set up is about 1000 miles away from being ‘aesthetic’ but hey, at least I’m actually studying today! I’ve almost finished my first task in my work book, once I’ve done that I think I’m going to make a pot of coffee and some lunch :)
i had orientation for college on wednesday i got to pick my classes n see what the dorms look like and such !! i can’t wait to move in in september !!

My first summer in college, I started a photo album where I took a photo of every study spot I went to (I got to almost 200!) and I’m starting to do that again! I’ve been studying in a different location every single day and it makes studying more fun. Studying for so many hours every day can easily get monotonous, but changing up the setting actually helps a lot :-)

College Note-Taking System
Having cohesive and effective notes is one of the key skills I think one should have, especially in an academic setting. When you’re receiving a ton of information each day, you want to be able to keep track of that and remember what you’ve learned. I’m constantly trying out ways to make my note-taking more effective and tailored to my needs. Here’s what my note-taking system looks like so far.

Class Notes
Taking notes in class is an invaluable way to keep track of the new knowledge you’ve gained. However, depending on the mode in which the lecture material is conveyed, I take my notes differently. Here’s a summary of how I take my notes for each type of lecture, as well as some examples from the classes I’m taking now.
Slides (e.g. Macroeconomics)
Macroeconomics is a class in which you should be able to intuitively understand a lot of concepts but also remember a lot of things. Because of this, I’ve tailored my note-taking method and habits to achieve that goal.
I write my notes by hand because handwriting is more effective in committing things to memory.
As for what I actually do - and this is what I’ve done for other classes in which the professor/lecturer uses slides:
Read/skim over the slide.
Read each bullet point as the professor goes through them.
Copy it down if it’s straightforward or write it down in a structure and diction that I understand better (not necessarily in my own words - sometimes it’s just restructuring, e.g. splitting things up or joining different bullet points together).
Take note of any other important details the professor says about any particular point unless I think it’s intuitive or common sense.
Here’s an example from a Macroeconomics lecture.
Oral Presentation (e.g. Anthropology)
During classes in which the professor just speaks and doesn’t use much visual material, I listen before I write instead of attempting to write down every single detail mentioned.
Also, I type up my notes instead of handwriting them since the exams are all open-book so I don’t really have to commit things to memory.
Here’s what I do:
Listen for a cue that tells you what this particular part of the lecture will be about (and write it as a heading).
Write down main ideas and their supporting facts/details. If the facts/details come before the main ideas, then I’d usually draw an arrow.
Write down ideas and details from readings in their own section/subsection.
Sometimes, my professor also shows short clips in class, in which case I’d write down the message that I think the clip was meant to convey, as well as things that the professor points out that I didn’t think of on my own.
I’d also look up concepts/ideas/people/events (in real time) that are important to my understanding of the lecture material.

Demonstrations and Sample Problems (e.g. Computer Science)
Classes in which the lecture is mainly going through demos and problems are kind of tricky, because you want to know and understand what the professor is doing, but you also don’t want to be writing down every single step that’s being executed. Here’s what I’ve found to be the most effective so far:
If there are any, I import the slides/handout onto OneNote and annotate directly on the slide. If not, I just write down things like definitions, important concepts, and syntax-related things.
I focus on understanding what the professor’s doing with the demo or problem.
I then summarize the steps they took and
Write down comments and points they brought up, e.g. common errors, desirable habits/practices.
Also, these kinds of classes are usually classes in which you’d learn better when you actually do problems yourself, so I definitely learn more when I do assignments and labs than when I’m in class.

Rewritten Notes
My rewritten notes have definitely changed a lot since high school. Since most of my classes don’t require a lot of memorization, I organize my notes in such a way that they’d be easy to index or find information from. Here are some of the ways I do that:
Establishing a Visual Hierarchy
Having a well-defined hierarchy helps me flow through my notes really well as i read them. It helps me organize information like a mind map without actually making a mind map - I know the big topics and their subtopics and sub-subtopics and details … basically it’s easier to see how these ideas fit together.
But why don’t I just make mind-maps? See, the thing is, a lot of my notes require sequential or linear thinking, e.g. in macroeconomics it might be the sequence of events following a change in the economy, or in computer science it might be a general algorithm for solving a certain type of problem, or it might be proving or deriving a certain equation. These sorts of things just generally don’t work well with mind maps. Instead, establishing a visual hierarchy in my notes helps me organize different ideas while retaining the linear nature of the information.

Here is an example from my Web Programming class, which is a purely project-based class, so no prelims or exams. As you can see, I draw rectangles around important terminology so that I can easily find them while I’m working on a project. I also include examples from in-class activities as well as notes on syntax so I have an idea of how to implement certain things. These examples and notes are further grouped by terminology/concept.
Structuring Them for Easier Flow
My syllabi for my college courses are nowhere near as detailed as the syllabi for my high school courses - those of you who take/have taken Cambridge exams would know. In college, my syllabi are only lists of topics and not what you’re expected to know for each topic. Because of this, I have to find a way to arrange information so that I can achieve the most comprehensive and cohesive understanding of that topic, i.e. so that the flow of my notes is similar to the flow of my thinking.
For example, in my economics notebook, I like to have the details first (e.g. the separate markets: the goods market, the assets market, and the labor market) and then the big picture later (IS-LM-FE). Some people prefer the other way around - seeing the big picture and then going into the details - which I can understand and have done myself for certain topics.
Making Use of Proximity and Spacing
I very much dislike notes without good use of spacing and grouping things together. Keeping related ideas in visual proximity helps your brain (or at least mine) organize this information. It’s also a lot easier to find things and visualize your notes when they’re not just a huge chunk of text.
One thing I should probably mention is that I don’t use colored pens anymore because it just takes a lot of time to switch pens and think of a color palette. I also don’t have much use for it. In the past, I used color to help me memorize and group things in different categories, but now, I’ve found that there aren’t a whole lot of categories I need to keep track of, and when I do, I can do so with just one pen but changing the style of the text.
And that’s what my note-taking system currently looks like. It’s working well so far, but I still think there are other things I could try out that might be a better fit.

How To Make A Vision Board
The main purpose of a vision board is to answer the question, “How are you going to get from your current life to your ideal life?”. It is an excellent visualization tool that allows you to reflect on the type of person you were, are, and are hoping to be. Reflecting on that will help
motivate and inspire you to make changes so that you can live your ideal life.
So here are some of my tips for creating one, based on my own experience:
Don’t feel like you need to decide right away what exactly you want to put on it. Just focus on figuring out categories, or the aspects of your life that you would like to change. For example: health/fitness, travel, relationships, career, hobbies/passions, role models, etc. Really think about how you want to feel this year and plan your goals accordingly.
You don’t need an organizational structure if that’s not your thing. You don’t need to limit yourself to five items that represent you and your goals for each category. You don’t even need to label the categories if you don’t want to. You don’t have to group all items of a single category together if you don’t want to.If there is one aspect of your life you want to control more than others, go for it! Basically, the only thing that truly matters is that you enjoy making it, and the layout represents who you are.
Browse all social media platforms and other search engines for inspiration. Find images that speak to you, that accurately represent your goals, dreams, and aspirations. But don’t limit yourself to just quotes and images! You can include meaningful, sentimental objects as well, for example.
Don’t be afraid to make changes as necessary. Plans can change, and there is no need to keep something on there that doesn’t accurately represent you or your hopes for the future. The most important thing to remember is that whatever you add should make you feel happy and inspired.
And you’re done! Just remember to place it in a visible space and look at it often to remind yourself that achieving your ideal life is possible.

Studying from scientific papers
In many fields of study you’re going to encounter scientific papers at one point in your academic career. The following tips are taken from my six years of reading psychology papers.
Empirical articles
Empirical articles are reports of studies that involved some type of data to draw conclusions. Examples of this are (quasi-)experiments, epidemiological studies, intervention studies, observation studies. These papers typically consists of four sections.
Introduction: background, literature overview, leading up to research questions and hypotheses. Sometimes, the authors give a 2-3 sentence summary of how they addressed these questions in the current study as well.
Methods: detailed report of what the authors did to address their research questions
Results: detailed report of the findings, with no interpretation. Typically filled with numbers and statistical analyses
Conclusions: after a brief summary (usually), the authors draw conclusions based on results, answer the research questions, link it to existing literature, comment on the studies’ strengths and limitations, give pointers for future research, and mention implications
In a well-written paper, the introduction and discussion can be read without reading the middle part and give you a good grasp of what the study is about. This is not to say the middle part is not important, but in some cases you just don’t have the time to go through the analyses before an exam.
Some empirical studies consists of several sub-studies (usually in purely experimental research. In my field of psychology this is usually by social or cognitive psychologists). Apart from a general introduction and a general discussion, the set-up of each individual experiment is the same as mentioned above.
Before you start, ask yourself “what do I want to get out of this article?”
Are you studying for an exam?
Know what kind of questions to expect. Ask for practice exam question if possible. This will be help you focus on what is important
Generally, understand why the study is important/what it added to our knowlegde, how the questions were addressed, type of measurements used, conclusions, limitations
Think about the paper, too, rather than just trying to memorise it. What did you think about it? What would you do differently? What did the authors improve? These kinds of questions might show up on the exam
Don’t study papers in isolution. See if you can explain certain findings in one paper with a model posited in another paper, for example. Or try to think of what one author would say about someone else’s methods
If you’re running out of time or energy, read only the introduction and the discussion. Although the methods and results are also important to get an idea of how reliable and good the study was, the main ideas and findings will be in the intro and discussion
Are you writing an argumentative essay?
Keep the topic of your essay in mind and focus on that
You’ll be tempted to only look for papers that provide evidence for your thesis, but try not to discard counter-evidence. How can you explain contradictory findings? There should be nuance
Are you writing a (bigger) research paper (e.g., your thesis)
When you’re working on a bigger project it’s useful to summarise all relevant papers in a table (I like to use Microsoft Excel). List the articles in rows and their properties in the columns (e.g. author names, year, journal, hypotheses, basic theories, N, sample characteristics, measurements used, findings)
If you prefer, you can also do it on paper and combine it in a folder. However, I prefer the flexibility of a digital file, because I often go back and change or add things once I get a better understanding of a certain paper.
I created two examples (one, two). These are taken/based on paper overviews I made for an essay and my master’s thesis. (I only left a couple of papers, but you’ll typically end up with way more articles of course!)
In the beginning phase, you want to focus on the introduction (to get an idea of what has been done in this field) and the discussions (where are the gaps), but later on you’ll move on to methods (what did they do and how it can be repeated/done better). Mark the papers that you like the best! They will guide your process to coming up with your own research questions, but also help you in a later phase when you don’t know how to structure a certain section
Literature reviews
Reviews are papers that combine the knowledge we gained from previous studies that have been published. The great thing about these papers is that they kind of read like a text book! They are structured into sections and you are spared the trouble of reading and summarising all these papers yourself! However, there is no way to know how the authors worked on the paper, as it’s not systematic. Sometimes authors do wish to make a certain point and only discuss certain points. I would say review articles are an especially great starting point if you’re interested in a topic that you’re fairly new to and want to quickly learn about. Systematic reviews
If you’re looking for a more thorough type of review, there’s the systematic review. It’s relatively rare, but I love these babies. Someone (a team, probably) has gone through the effort of systematically going through all the papers published on a certain topic that meet certain criteria, read them, and organised all these findings into a paper that reads a bit like a mix between a text book and an empirical paper.
Meta-analyses
If you want to take the rigour even further, you’ve got yourself a meta-analysis. These authors are the real MVPs. In psychology, there is a huge replication crisis (with many “groundbreaking” studies failing to deliver the same results in replication studies) as well as a publication bias (it’s far easier to get published when you have interesting or unusual results). Meta-analyses help these issues a bit (does the field need a reform? Yes. Will I discuss that here? No). In meta-analyses, the authors systematically go through databases looking for papers that meet certain criteria (like in systematic reviews, but instead of just listing and organising previous results, and basing their conclusions of the authors’ conclusions (basically), they re-analyse the research question using the statistics from many papers studying roughly the same thing. The advantage is that you have a much larger sample, different measures may be used (reducing the risk of instrument-specific findings), and there is an estimate of what the effect size would be if there were no publication bias. Not always easy to read, definitely not easy to write, but they are helpful for the field.
Case studies
Case studies describe a very low number of observations, common mostly in medicine. These are usually exploratory bases for more experimental research and should be treated as such. Studying these papers can be useful to get a good idea of a certain condition, especially if it is a very uncommon condition. Case studies are often used in introductory courses, because they tell a gripping tale of a real person; they are intriguing. However, it’s risky to draw conclusions from them.
things I wish i would have known my first year of University
1) Make an outline for your papers. it doesn’t have to be detailed but having one will help you keep on track when writing. it will only take you a few minutes to brainstorm one.
2) always carry a spare charger and a backup battery for your phone. honestly, our phones are an extension of us now, so nothing is scarier than when it dies halfway through your class. a backup battery and a charger are always handy.
3) set smaller deadlines and stick to them. you might flounder if you decide to have your 2000 word essay all done and edited for March 14. but you might have an easier time deciding to have 500 words written by March 8, 1000 words by March 10, 1500 words by March 11, 2000 words by March 13, and to edit it on the 14th. these smaller deadlines have really helped me to get my work done and to not to stress about deadlines. splitting up my assignments into smaller chunks makes it more manageable.
4) email your professors if you have questions. or go to their office when they’re in. don’t sit there in confused silence, it won’t help.
5) Do practise Self-care and take breaks. these don’t always have to be full days off with a spa day. it can be having a bubble bath after studying for hours, or watching a movie that makes you laugh after finishing an essay. or just making sure you're eating healthy and drinking water.
6) do put important dates in your calendar. weather its a psychical calendar, or one on your phone/ computer. I have all my major dates on my computer laptop, it helps when I am studying and wondering when I have an exam or need to remember when to hand in a paper.
7) always have a highlighter, a pencil, a pen, and spare paper. you never know when you’re going to have a pop quiz or an activity in class.
8) reach out to friends and spend time with them/ your family. people tend to isolate themselves during exam/paper/midterm season. while you definitely need to study, you also need to have social connections. make a study date at your library or even get a coffee with a friend.
