Jayda and Raider's Puppies Week 8: We’re entering our highest fear period! As some of us go to our forever homes this weekend, we will be going through our highest fear period, which is part of normal puppy development. It's important that we are cautiously introduced to new furry friends. Some things to note are: SPACE - if I don't feel I have a way to escape a fearful situation with another animal, I may feel my only option is to fight. ESCAPE - Give me a low chair or crate so I can hide and control the situation safely and build confidence at my pace. OFF LEAD- I may feel threatened if on lead with no escape. EXPERIENCE- Watch my behavior to prevent issues before they happen. A few key points to remember during my 8-12 week development. 1.) Introduce me to as many neutral friendly dogs as possible. 2.) Accustom me to activities you want to enjoy when I'm grown. (Fishing, boating, etc.) 3.) Use caution by remembering I'm emotionally sensitive. 4.) I need plenty of rest. 1 hour of play = 2 hours of rest. Did you know there are pet friendly stores? We have enjoyed socializing our dogs and puppies at several of these locations. Always call to verify policy's and bring plastic bag and paper towels in case of potty accidents. Also, be mindful of your surroundings. Don’t bring them around food areas. Week 7 1/3 Potty training is all about you and the puppy learning to communicate together.

Questions your puppy has are:

Which door do I use?

How do I let you know I need to go?

Where do I go once in the yard?

One method is to place an exercise pen or crate near the door the puppy will use. This is a great setup to use during those times we can't follow them around and give the undivided attention a "potty training" puppy needs. We recommend hanging a bell from that door. The bell should be the only toy the puppy plays with in that area. When puppy plays with it, let them out. This teaches the puppy which door and how to notify you he needs to go. Slowly expand the area as the puppy catches on.

When do they need let out?

• 10 minutes after starting play

• 15 minutes after eating

• Immediately upon waking up (even from naps)

• Every hour until you learn puppy’s routine.

Consider the 30” high for indoor house training and the 48” if using as a small kennel outside. If attaching it to your crate, get the same height.
