From the top of the world to the ends of it, we’ve found ourselves in some of the most incredible places. But no adventure means more than the one where I get to build the rest of my life with you. Surrounded by friends and glaciers on a trip that I’ve dreamed of for years, saying yes to this “big life decision” with you was the easiest question I’ve ever answered. I love you @jeichengreen, and I’m so excited for all the adventures ahead of us and the little moments in between. 5 planes, 1 taxi, 2 buses, and 1 ferry to the end of the world, and packing my bag for the 4th time on the eve before we launch into our hike. #patagonia #chile #puertonatales #puntaarenas #magellanstrait (at Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmu4xu4MYgOAHdDzvbUqJdDyTtm0LHxdUw5b740/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Missing the holiday traditions of home today but grateful to spend it on our way to a long awaited trip to Patagonia. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah from part of our hiking family! https://www.instagram.com/p/CmnOs-Osfib-uB_6iAhjM0enWCx5GMrmvVXvVE0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
In a moment when I feel like I’m hurtling towards the future with unanswered questions, I was tempted to only keep looking forward this birthday. How will I manage to get through the rest of this semester? How do I want to wrap up my last few months as a grad student? Where will we live? What work is it that I really want to do? Does it exist? Graduation, moving, not wasting an opportunity I’ve spent two years building. But the gift of having a birthday around Thanksgiving means a moment to pause and break away from the noise. To pull myself away from the day to day details that don’t actually matter to find the things that do. To stop making things what they’re not and appreciating them for what they are. It was a year full of the small moments that I felt like I had been missing when there was never enough paid time off in a year. Braiding toddler hair, reading goodnight books, and swing set time - watching my best friends become amazing parents and finding my next best friends who are all under the age of five. Real talk in the kitchen as we make dinner and over after work drinks that we’re all figuring it out and finding ways to make meaning in our lives. Of sharing the new places I am still learning and retreading on old stomping grounds. It was a year of taking advantage of the temporary to try on new places. To road trip, ride trains, and walk community corridors. To work with amazing teams of people, wrestle with hard questions, and be challenged in new ways. To find that the unfamiliar quickly becomes home when I can share it with those I love most. My birthday was a gift itself with warm sunshine and clear blue skies on a mountain trail in North Carolina. The view from the top stretched west and south to ranges in neighboring states. A reminder that there is plenty up ahead to look forward to, but the climb itself isn’t too bad either. https://www.instagram.com/p/Clba3FZr0UYPq1U0GLlntjnSgdhVrbldUNKGBo0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Half way done. This first year of grad school has been many things - a place to meet so many incredible thought leaders and friends, an opportunity to dig into interesting policy issues and have hard conversations about the real things happening in the world, and a chance to explore new interests while refining the areas of work I am most passionate about. And it’s been a year that has challenged me in ways I never imagined. I’m grateful for the people, experiences, and opportunities this first year has brought into my life and love being back in the Midwest where people understand that everything goes with ranch dressing and it’s perfectly normal to talk to strangers you meet on the sidewalk. Here’s to one year down, an exciting summer ahead, and some much-needed time to unplug and recharge. https://www.instagram.com/p/CdoL9WeFkZp8D4gNPW75ItKPR8PFZkRZIt4SbI0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Last year, Christmas was a single strand of lights across the fireplace, boxes that had been wrapped and shipped across the country tucked under a giant peace lily, and a day of Zoom with the family as we did our best to transfer traditions into a virtual normal. This year, sitting next to Mom and Dad’s tree, the holidays mean even more than usual to spend them at the place that will always be home with the people I love most. https://www.instagram.com/p/CX-Od5iMFo8P3qQsHDyTH3n0pOK8VA9cogOKCU0/?utm_medium=tumblr

45 days ago, we collapsed with relief in the doorway of our little home in Colorado. After an unexpected week of quarantine, missing COVID test results, visa extensions, and rescheduled flights, we had finally arrived home from Tanzania. It was the start of a whirlwind of change. We had lost precious time to say goodbye to many of those we cared about and soak in the final days of mountain time as we rushed to meet moving deadlines and pack the last 5 years of our lives into boxes. The next week, we were setting off to new homes in new states with new focuses for graduate school programs ahead. It’s been thrilling, exhausting, and a little disorienting as we’ve hit the ground running, our momentum carrying us from one thing into the next. I am grateful to get to spend your birthday weekend with you exploring these new places that are quickly becoming your familiar and to spend our time still getting lost in the woods. There’s no doubt you are taking advantage of everything that UVA has to offer, and that you are precisely where you are supposed to be. I’m so excited for all that is ahead of you this year and all of the years to come. Happy birthday, you. https://www.instagram.com/p/CUBV07Qlfiokezkh3ia9JePc_SAC9a-KDrA7qg0/?utm_medium=tumblr
We have reached! Until I had my feet on the ground at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, I wasn’t sure we would actually make it. A last minute re-route 12 hours before we were supposed to leave and on my last day of work meant we had to cut our trip short by a week. When we finally got on the plane on Thursday, storms in New York caused us to miss our connections, further delaying the trip another 24 hours and requiring us to find a hotel at 3am. When a semi smashed into an electric pole in front of the hotel the next morning, it caused a power outage and shut down the only street available to get out of the hotel and to the airport. It left us to a last minute evacuation by the single shuttle available, packing as many hotel guests as possible into the vehicle and sitting on each other’s laps to ensure we all made our flights. Mechanical issues, lost bags, flight changes to avoid more impending weather, and emergency COVID tests to ensure we met the Tanzania entry requirements because of our delays all happened before we even left the US and became a comedy of errors that we couldn’t have made up if we tried. And within all of that there have been many gifts that have told us we arrived exactly when we were supposed to. The week delay meant extra time to enjoy the Colorado summer hiking and camping, finding the best view in the city to watch fireworks, and giving me plenty of time to pack and a moment to pause. The trip to Tanzania put us in Detroit to help a stranger in the airport, reminded us to always stay flexible and find humor in the difficult moments, and showed me again why @jeichengreen is my favorite travel partner. It feels good to be back on this continent, in a place that is both familiar and new. And now, finally, on to that mountain! https://www.instagram.com/p/CRLoakvFCSkAh-rBi69pKRfQnYgL_IuyTV49U00/?utm_medium=tumblr
