On the deck tonight is Agua Mala Astillero IPA. Bright biscuit malt and citrus flavour up front and a long bitter, kick you in the ass finish at 7%. This is our second beer from this brewery which shows lots of promise. Aplauso! Thanks again to Carolyn for this lovely gift from Mexico.

Firestone Walker “Seventeenth (XVII) Anniversary Ale” American Strong Ale (2013 Vintage): There’s no real reason to add “2013 Vintage” because 17 is the 2013 vintage. It’s just there to let you know when it was released. That said, this is the 17th Anniversary Blend by Firestone Walker comprised mainly of 7 beers blended;

30% of Bravo, an Imperial Brown Ale aged in bourbon and brandy barrels

25% of Stickee Monkee, an English Barleywine aged in bourbon and whiskey barrels,

15% of Velvet Merkin, a traditional Oatmeal Stout aged in bourbon barrels, another

15% of Parabola, a Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout aged in bourbon barrels

8% of Double DBA, a double-strength English Pale Ale aged in retired Firestone Union Barrels

4% of Helldorado, a Blonde Barleywine aged in bourbon and brandy barrels, and finally

3% of Wookey Jack, a Black Rye IPA that’s 100% fresh with stainless steel fermentation.

This beer is definitely one to sit and contemplate over and over again. It is an abyss of complexity, captured and bottled for those adventurous enough to take the plunge. The aroma brings notes of light-cacao chocolate, toasted coconut, and baking spice. Subtle rum-soaked nuttiness (ironically because none of this was aged in rum barrels), likely derived from notes of caramel / toffee / molasses , turbinado / brown sugar and a bourbon / brandy blend of alcohol. Undertones of cocoa / mocha and barrel notes of oak and vanilla. On the palate, ample fusel notes bring forward characteristics of toffee and cocoa, vanilla, oak and coconut. Echoes of dark cherry and dark fruit. Subtle nuttiness with baking spice appear towards the back of the palate. Medium-plus body with a lively mouthfeel and a lingering finish. Artfully blended to perfection. Highly palatable. If I find another bottled, I’ll definitely swoop on it. Their blends are the best beers they release in my opinion. I’ll be interested to see how my 2013 bottle of Parabola will turn out next year in my 3-year vertical epic I’m compiling.

Blackheart English Style IPA from #ThreeFloyds, a tasty representation of the style. Citrus and floral aromas open up to a biscuity malt canvas that is shadowed by a hop spice with strong notes of earthy leather and citrus pith. #craftbeer #fff #3floyds

1. Newcastle Brown Ale - The Newcastle beer has been found to contain caramel coloring. Class 3 and 4 caramel coloring is made from ammonia, which is classified as a carcinogen. While alcohol is a carcinogen itself, drinking it in moderation may decrease your chances at developing cancer. However, more added carcinogens will have the opposite effect. “The one and only” beer with extra cancer causing qualities.

2. Budweiser - One of the most popular beers, or most advertised is Budweiser. Budweiser contains genetically modified (GMO) corn. In 2007, Greenpeace discovered experimental GMO rice in Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser) beer.

3. Corona Extra - I used to love Corona’s commercials. They were so peaceful and relaxing. That is until I found out that the beer contains GMO Corn Syrup and Propylene Glycol. Propylene Glycol is controversial, and is said to may be potentially harmful to your health.

4. Miller Lite - This is another very popular beer in America that contains GMOs. Miller Lite contains GMO corn and corn syrup. It’s “GMO time”.

5. Michelob Ultra - Less popular but still readily available Michelob beer, should be eliminated from your choices. This beer has been found to contain a genetically modified sweetener (GMO dextrose)

6. Guinness - Guinness is often praised for it’s smoothness.  However, several investigations proved that Guinness ingredients are quite disturbing. The beer contains isinglass, an ingredient which comes from fish bladder and high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup has been long banned from many stores and drinks.

Update: Good news! We’ve contacted Guinness and they have stated that they no longer use high fructose corn syrup in any of their beers.

7. Coors Light - Coors light is a drink that is very popular at bars and among college students.  Mostly because its cheap. The beer contains GMO corn syrup.

8. Pabst Blue Ribbon - Pabst Blue Ribbon contains GMO corn and GMO corn syrup.

Three Floyds “Zombie Dust”

99 A+

Zombie Dust is a single-hop Pale Ale showcasing Citra hops grown in the Yakima Valley of Oregon. I love the label art, along with the cool reflective paper its printed on (however, the glue needs work). Aromas are overflowing with citrus-centered hops that come across in a West Coast sort of way. Fresh grapefruit is the dominant note, followed closely by a lovely tropical scent like mango. This nose is worthy of a perfect score.

The palate casts a net of bright citrus tones flavored like grapefruit pith and orange juice. Ripe tropical fruits fill the middle register, resembling papaya and mango while sweet sugars accumulate. The finish is announced by a modest strike of bitterness, held in equal reflection to that gentle sweetness for the most harmonious ratio of flavor. Mild hints of grass fade out to the background. It appears as if bitterness is equal to sweetness is equal to sourness, so that the three each fall succinctly, then gather in the same pool at the end. The sustain is quick, so drinkability is good. Mouthfeel is crisp over a moderate, well-rounded body that finishes a little dry.

I love this flavor profile! Lush hops rest upon the unrelenting support of well-balanced malts. Everything tastes exactly as it should, and nothing feels out of place. As far as the Pale Ale goes, this follows a sweeter route which carries less of a bitter punch than is typical. Personally, I think you’re unlikely to find much better than this. Since it’s quite popular in the craft beer community, I’m really glad to have been able to try it (thanks for the trade, Holly). I think Zombie Dust is probably worth the hype, because I find nothing here that needs improvement. This is one of those beers I would gladly call my everyday beer if Three Floyds had wider distribution. I highly recommend it!

HALF ACRE DAISY CUTTER BEER

It’s not as easy as you think for a brewer to pack a ton of flavor into a lower alcohol beer. But Daisy Cutter Pale Ale from Half Acre Beer Company in Chicago does just that. Daisy Cutter is a pale ale in IPA clothing — with a bitter but pleasing hop bite jammed into a 5.2% ABV package. This aggressively hopped Pale Ale manages to give off the grapefruit and floral hop notes of a double IPA, but somehow pulls off a light, easy to drink pale ale. A confoundingly complex beer that is a true craft classic.

This is a great beer. If you can find it in your area I recommend picking some up.
