There’s something so telling about Will in S1, even pre-encephalitis, being kind of a professorial frump. He’s got his weird flannels+bad hair thing and then BAM he immediately switches it up with cute hair+slutty lil curl+herringbone coat+salmon shirt of seduction.

We often portray Will as kind of hapless in his self-presentation, like he’s unaware he’s attractive, or like he doesn’t know how to dress. It’s so interesting to me that he DEFINITELY does know how to make himself look good, and not just GOOD, but good in a way that suits him. If he started getting $200 haircuts and dressing in three piece suits or, hell, even the kind of Standard Office Professional like Jack, Hannibal would never buy it. He’d know he was being pandered to. Will’s ‘honey pot’ style is still has all the markers of functionality, comfort, masculinity, and subtlety as Will’s S1 wardrobe, just styled better. He’s still Will, he still has that sort of ‘academic unbothered with fashion’ thing, but it’s sexy this time. The hair off the forehead, the flattering colors, the scarves, oh baby, it is WORKING.

This is what makes Will scary. This is the empathy thing in action. He changes his plumage juuuust enough to appeal to Hannibal’s sense of aesthetics, while still remaining uniquely himself, the self that Hannibal wants. Will always knows exactly what he’s doing.
