Thoughts about the update! 11/29
This is going to have a lot of spoilers! Beware!
So like, building off a post i made after the April update, Julie and Frank are absolutely soulmates in the most manufactured way possible. Also this post is literally me just dissecting two lines so like scroll if you must lol.
I'm focusing on the garden scene because I've been analyzing it for some time. First, I have to say the voice direction is outstanding. However, I'd like to discuss the specific exchange between Julie and Frank. When Frank first meets Julie, his delivery is very stilted, drawing out each syllable as if carefully reading from his script.
But with his second line, Frank's voice shifts and sounds much more genuine as he begins to express his feelings to Julie (addressed to her, not about her). This especially comes through when he describes their relationship: "I saw you standing amongst the flowers and found myself drawn to you."
After Julie responds, Frank almost dreamily replies, "Yesā¦ Yes, of course. Iā¦ I feel- I feel like Iām bound to be." His inflection suggests he is realizing his one-sided connection to Julie, highlighted by the difference between his spoken line and what appears in the storybook.
The scene begins the same, but Frank changes the line to talk almost entirely about himself.
This brings me to my main point: Frank was meant to be Julie's love interest. While he does have his own character traits, he is not intended to exist independently from her. This is demonstrated when he says, "I feel like Iām bound to be"ā this is not a mutual connection, but rather a predetermined one. They are not meant to be drawn to each other, Frank is just meant to be drawn to Julie. And though this doesn't manifest in a romantic relationship this connection shows itself in the deep affection they have for one another, and the lengths Frank went to protect Julie.
This is like, really scrambled rn so like, probably doesnt make sense, but yeah no, in the same way Wally and Barnaby are best friends because they were written to be, Julie and Frank are entirely inseparable.
