He opened his eyes wide instantly, letting out a short gasp as Kuzuryuu spoke. His body stiffened as he looked up to him, and he shouted at him in frustration, âHey, donât scare me like that! Yaâ nearly gave me a heart attack, yaâ know?â
Souda released a sigh and shook his head, pulling his beanie down a little bit. He relaxed himself once more and decided on resting his arms over his crossed legs lazily. He sighed once more before speaking again, âAnâ of course itâs me. Who else on this island has pink hair?â There wasnât anyone else on the island with pink hair like his. However, because it was dark out where they were, it was likely that Kuzuryuu didnât notice until he was up close.
"Anyway⌠What are yaâ doinâ up for? Itâs pretty late out, you should get some restâŚ"
"Hmph, that was a bit of an overreaction you had there." he remarked. This kid was certainly not somebody Kuzuryuu was ever fond of, but who is? Besides, he had nothing better to do.
"I can't get any sleep.. because.. th..that's none of your business.. why are you still awake?"Â
He quickly avoided that response, because this was no time to embarrass himself.Â
Her eyes perked open upon his entrance, taking a moment to glance over him as if to confirm he were really there. He was right, in a certain sense; She wasnât particularly expecting to see him, but at the same time, it wasnât un-welcomed. Just the fact that he started off with an apology spoke quite a bit to the photographer.
She wasnât going to turn him away. That would just be ignorant. Even in tough times like this, Mahiru wouldnât go so far as to shoo someone off, especially when it seemed as if his intentions were genuine.
What happened to her on the island was instantaneous; According to deductive reasoning, it was likely her stern words towards Kuzuryuu that caused her downfall. Well..One of the factors, to say the least. Unless he was a distraction of sorts for the true culpritâAfter all, at the time she never saw who exactly killed her.
"No..Itâs fine. Iâd rather discuss it out. Pushing everything aside wonât solve anything." She was a firm believer in thatâAt any cost, the redhead wanted to talk through her problems rather than resorting to violence or merely ignoring them. Neither of those options were any good. She believed that regardless of the circumstance, even if the issue was small.
Cue a pause, raising her head up and speaking in a soft-spoken tone: âI..appreciate you coming here. Iâm sure this must be a hard thing to do in the first place.â And for that, she appreciated the gesture of even bothering to show up in the first place.
How is she acting so calmly..? Kuzuryuu wondered. Without a doubt she must remember who she was quarreling with before, and how that person could easily have been the one who bludgeoned her to death. She knew nothing. She knew nothing about his situation with Peko, nor did she ever see her come up from behind. The explanation will be a lot to take in for the poor girl.
Muddled by her response, he escaped his eyes from meeting hers. He couldn't bare to torture himself making eye contact with somebody he caused the demise of. There's nothing he could really do but discuss it.Â
"You seem so calm about everything that's going on.. That's something I could never do.." he muttered. "Really, it's fortunate that you ended up being alive after all.. You should cherish that, you know." he continued.
Rambling once again, he attempts to stall her from even asking about what happened. It must be done at one point, this chattering is all useless.
>>WAKE<<
Peko slept.
Her conscious mind, once brimming with activity, had been absent for weeks upon weeks, now; the few thoughts that managed to linger for a few seconds instead of just slipping through as if intangible were never quite sure of themselves, always somewhere between reality and unreality, similar to the state between sleep and wakefulness.
It was a blessing in disguise, however; if she had been self-aware, if she knew anything of her situation, it was likely she wouldnât be able to cope. The few moments she had spent alive with the weight of her failureâ metaphorically upon her shoulders and literally between her shoulderbladesâ had been enough trauma to last a lifetime. This didnât stop her subconscious from attempting to piece together its broken memories, to bring reality back to Peko, to force her wake, but it was all futile. Sensible conclusions never surfaced and even if they had, she could never become aware. The memories played over and over like a broken record with no end in sight; of course, the most pervasive were the ones Peko would have tried desperately to forget.
Thousands of times now she had felt the numbing, relentless pain of a sword in her back. It was invasive, never failing to send shivers up her spine even if she was, in reality, lying safe in a hospital bed. When those drew away from her attention, others came to light in their wake. Undeniably, the worst, and thus the most frequent one, was that of the proof of Pekoâs mistake. The young master below her, scarlet blood erupting from his right eye; the image was burned onto her eyelids, never ceasing to plunge her deeper into her silent despair. Sheâd die a thousand times for him, but experiencing a death just once after doing such an act was more than she could bear.
But something shifted in that moment. The memories faded to black, real black, not the total absence of color as she had always experienced. The sight in front of her was real, tangible despite the lack of detail, and slowly she realizedâ the hospital sheets stiff and unwrinkled below her handsâ the faint scent of isopropanolâ the feeling of weight, of existing in a body rather than a being made of stardust and memories in a world unknownâ it was real, too real, it wasnât a dream or an illusionâ
Peko woke up.
As she became aware of her surroundings, the beating of her heart didnât change; she was calm. Simply existing was exhausting in and of itself after so long spent on the sidelines, running on autopilot. But she must moveâ she must get up, she had something to do, something or someone needed her and it was urgent, and she didnât know what it was but she had to stand up, find himâ
Fuyuhiko.
It was him. The boy whose face plagued her mind, whose live she had saved in exchange for her own, the one she had been tied to from the beginning. Remembering seemed to lift a barrier in her mind, and she calmed again. To think logically was important now, and would prove invaluable to the task she had assigned herself.
She tried to move a finger tentatively, and found she could, although with startling difficulty considering the simplicity of the task. Completely disregarding any sensible course of action, she drew together all the willpower she had and heaved herself up into a sitting position, though not without a cry of pain from every muscle inside her.
Her fingers rubbed the sleep from her eyes, and every inch was her body was either aching, tingling, or painful; opening them to look around the room did little at first. Her farsightedness, in addition to the inactivity of her eyes for months, prevented her from discerning much around her aside from blurry blobs and shadows. Instead, she scanned the room with her other senses frantically in search of something, anything to explain to her what was going on and where the young master was and if he was safe and how she was aliveâŚ
It feels as if all he has done these days is wait. Waiting, waiting, waiting. Impatient thrives the boy, waiting isn't that fun anymore. It was never fun, was it? The only fun it contains is the anticipation. Anticipation for something that won't be confirmed until she awakes.
At this point, the so-called "hope" he ever grasped onto had vanished, but checking up on her in the hospital is only a habit that he cannot let go of. Her slumber has lasted for so long, that it shouldn't matter anymore, but it does.
He was used to the endless nights and lack of sleep, carelessly messing up his schedule. Night almost hits, but the sun hasn't set just yet. The boy has a feeling in his gut that this will be the night, and he gets a sudden urge to check up on the comatose Peko. Out of reflex, he springs up out of his bed and exits his room.
After a mini stroll , he opens the door he has latched onto everyday since he entered the island. Bright lights spring into his eyes, causing him to squint. Sitting in front of him lied ten kids in their hospital beds unconcious. Plenty of kids who never deserved what they did get. Stepping onto the ledge, he enters the gloomy hospital. One, two, three, four, five, he counts. Not a single kid awake tonight. As expected..
The seat right beside Peko Pekoyama, Super Highschool Level Swordswoman, magnetizes him like a moth to a streetlight. Suddenly landing onto the ledge, Kuzuryuu hangs his head, and stares at the girl that he once knew. A human tool, she would be thinking. Although that was a lie.
He thought he was used to it, but a deep, sharp pain hits his stomach when he remembers that she might never wake up. He rests himself against the ledge he was sitting on top of, and stares into the space.Â
He begins dozing off, but the squeak of the hospital bed causes him to jump out of surprise. That was not a noise he was expecting, confusion wanders in his mind for a split second. Could it be..? Finally, he shifts his head toward the sudden sound effect.
Peko.
She lifted herself out of the bed, and searched the room in a sudden daze. When her bright red eyes met the blonde's dusty gold, in a high contrast, an intense emotion hit him. It took him a few moments to comprehend what was happening, what this feeling was, what he wanted. Before he was able to identify it, he threw himself into an affectionate embrace, probably startling her.
She hadnât been awake for too long at that point, but just the fact that she was there to open her eyes in the first place provided more than enough room for a certain sense of celebration. No, Mahiru hardly felt everything had come to a conclusion now that she was conscious, but rather, the doors to reality were now opened and just waiting for her to explore them.
Just as before, a mixture of emotions enveloped the photographer: Guilt, fear, confusion..âShe could only hope to resolve matters in an efficient method. Granted, mindless ramblings would hardly solve anything; It would take the effort of both parties to come to a proper agreement, or at least an attempt at understanding one another. Sure, perhaps she could pinpoint a few people sheâd like to speak with, but was that really up to her?
Kuzuryuu has acknowledged the awakening of Mahiru Koizumi, but only stood silent, even when she was present. Small bits of PTSD hit him even thinking about what happened, and what he had done to her. Even knowing he didn't do it directly so, he was the factor of it all. Even for Peko's.
The blonde strolled past, and noticed the redhead who he was just considering. A feeling hit his gut that he should talk to her, but it was a terrifying thought.Â
Fuck it, I'm not gonna hold back now now, he thinks. Lightly shaking, he approaches the girl. Will she remember what happened? Do I have to explain it all? These are the only thoughts going through his mind.
"Sorry, I never got the chance to even speak to you when you woke up.. I.. I know I am probably the last person you'd want to talk to right now.." he stuttered.
He stopped right there. She'll understand.
dropping in | [[kuzuryuu&kirigiri]]
Kirigiri stood in silence for a moment, not sure what to say or if she should say anything at all to the boy. It was only after several seconds that she realized she was neglecting the task at hand.
Glancing once again at the clipboard, she strode over to the harsh white machines on the other side of Pekoyama and punched in a few numbers. Blood pressure okay, breathing normal, heartbeat regularâa little on the fast side, if anything, she noted.
The scratching of her pen as she filled in all the necessary forms was the only thing to fill the silence, besides the quiet yet cold beeping of the machinery. Yet unlike most silences, which she could handle, Kirigiri was⌠almost uncomfortable.
"Kuzuryuu-kun, would you appreciate if I marked you down as first-to-know ifâwhen Pekoyama-san wakes up?â
"Yeah.. I think I would.." he mumbled again. There wasn't much to be said at the moment, it was almost a bit awkward.
Ever since the kids returned safely from the game, things have been a bit gloomier.. you could probably say. Its been different for each kid but that applied to him certainly.
"Do you really think she'll wake up..?" he asked.
dropping in | [[kuzuryuu&kirigiri]]
Kirigiri wasnât expecting an answer at all, much less a deep, masculine voice; her file told her that this room was occupied by a comatose female, Super High-School Level Swordswoman, Peko Pekoyama. She scanned the file once again, searching for the notes section.
Ah, I see. âKuzuryuu-kun⌠I hope you know that weâre working as quickly as possible to revive Pekoyama-san.â She recalled that the meaning of the words didnât have a significant impact on oneâs grieving, but that knowing people cared lessened the pain little by little.
"You can take your time, if youâd like. Iâm only here to run some tests and make sure Pekoyama-sanâs condition is stable."
This information lightened the atmosphere a bit. He became a tad more optimistic although he restrained from showing any sign of it.
He didn't really want anyone to care or even try to care about his feelings as of recently, the pity is only pathetic to him. Things are so much better yet I can't be grateful about it.
"Y..yeah.. that's alright..." he mumbled a bit. At this point he was more embarrassed than grieving. He silently sat back down where he was previously. He was hoping he could at least hear a partial result, but went without asking.
dropping in | [[kuzuryuu&kirigiri]]
Life on Jabberwock Island was certainly more hectic than at the Future Foundationâs primary offices, Kirigiri mused, glancing at the clipboard she clutched to her chest. At the current moment, she was headed down to the rehabilitation ward to check up on one of the recovering Super High-School Level Despair.
The click-clack of her heels slowed as she reached the more hospital-esque portion of the building and pushed through the swinging doors. Once again, her eyes flicked down to the files clamped to the board. The room certainly shouldnât be too far from here, she thought, swinging her gaze across room numbers and comparing them with the information on the sheet.
This was the correct room.
She knocked on the door frame, alerting the occupant of her presence, before taking a step inside the room and closing the door behind her.
"I donât think weâve met at this point. Iâm Kyouko Kirigiri. And you must beâŚ"
Startled by the sudden entrance, Kuzuryuu slightly jumped a few feet away, keeping him from leaving. He stared at the girl in slight embarrassment but followed what she was asking him.
"F..Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu, it is.." he sputtered. He just found it a bit awkward that she'd barge in like that while he was checking up on her. The way I'm speaking makes it seem like I consider her some kind of threat..
"I was just leaving.."
As time approached the late hours of the night, Souda lied in his bed in his casual attire for the night. Staring up at the ceiling. Silent. Silent all except for the sound of his breathing, which has started to be more relaxed lately. He heaved out a sigh, stretching out his arms and releasing a yawn before pushing himself up and out of his stiff bed. He rubbed his eyes roughly, opened them wide and let out a large breath before deciding to make his way for the door. He gripped the handle tightly and forced it down, exiting his cottage and stepping outside. He inhaled the fresh, slightly cool air in and exhaled through his mouth, looking around to see if anyone else is out. Silent. Silent all except for bugs buzzing lightly as they wandered in the night.
"Damn, thereâs gotta be at least someone up now!â He exclaimed, forcing his fingers through his poorly layered hair. Letting out a low growl, he released the grip he had on his hair and slumped over, defeated. Glancing around once more, he walked out onto the path and headed downward towards the beach. Perhaps the waves could help ease his mind, with many of his classmates in comatose and having found out too much, there was just too much on his mind to think straight. Souda was completely incapable of even focusing on building something. Even if it was a little trinket, like a watch, he couldnât wrap his mind around it well enough.
He sat down by the ocean, slowly beginning to close his eyes as he listened the water splash up onto shore, drowning out any sound of the footsteps coming from behind.
No one should be awake at this hour, I think. Kuzuryuu exited his cottage into the dark night. Gazing into the bright atmosphere the island provided him, he let out a small sigh. Sleeping has been such a struggle lately, there's too much to think about. He almost wonders how anyone on his island has been able to sleep. The island was silent, a lot more silent than he ever remembered.
Back then, surrounding him would be only sound. It was only idiotic chatter to his ears. An island that once had enough kids to cover up the entire floor, or it at least seemed.
The boy stumbled onto the sand, which felt as soft as a clean coat of fur. It was comfy, For a second he thought it would be comfier to sleep here instead of a hot room with a small bed. He proceeded across the beach and stared at the calm waves approaching him.Â
Wait, I'm not alone. he thought. A trace of breath reached him as he jumped in a startle. Is that Souda?Â
"Eh.. Souda, is that you?"
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER WHEN YOU ARE IN A BAD MOOD?
[Eh.. I don't really know..? If I had to say something, it would be Peko. But she can't right now.]
..
[I talk to the other students sometimes if I can't make myself feel better on my own..]
