comfort is often found in the smallest of things: songbirds chirping to mark the end of another day, muted whistle of the pressure cooker, and the quiet snips of seojoon’s pruners as he trips the wilted leaves of his bouquet. he enjoys silence far more than noise, especially when that silence is shared with himself. it’s one of the quieter evenings - one of his free ones - with no students chasing after him for an eleventh hour homework help or a ton of papers with illegible writing to squint through.
three sharp raps on his door pauses his pruning work effectively. perhaps he has spoken too soon?
“come in, please,” he calls out, just as the pressure cooker keens in a final whistle, loudly insisting to be taken off the stove. “you’re just in time,” he smiles, “i’ve been meaning to try this barley tea recipe on an unwilling scapegoat.”
.。*゚✩.*. — there wasn't a single place jinhai could currently go and amuse himself to relieve the accursed boredom surfacing through his mind. advancing on his homework or being productive to advance his studies where on his list as he meandered through the halls of crocus, neither was seeking out a group of fellow peers who bring chaotic disaster everywhere they go is the way he wanted to spend his evening; yet, there must be someone he could go for well-needed company. an idea came to his head: to visit his one of his favorite teachers.
fortunately, jinhai did not get lost in his search for mister cha's classroom, finding around the institute with unfamiliar ease as the former would always find himself astray from the paths he was required to take, having a severely poor sense of direction. regardless, the male wasn't going to dwell on such a measly thought, arriving at the aforementioned male's door and knocking on it three times to indicate his sudden and unannounced arrival, letting himself in only when he heard the other respond.
❝ unwilling scapegoat? i am more eager to try whatever you seem to be creating than reluctant, cha-xiansheng, ❞ jinhai returns the smile with his own polite one, emphasized by the keenness in his tone. ❝ it smells toasty. is this your first time making this kind of tea? ❞

history
born in wuhan, people’s republic of china!!
he comes from a very long and old line of magi. zhengs are most notable for being duelists, obliviators, and arithmancers. his parents were no exception—his mother was a notable duelist, able to cast a spell to disarm with ease, and his father was an arithmancer, discovering magical properties of the number four and working as a code-breaker for different institutes. his childhood best friend’s family was similar to his own, except with a different history than his.
as a child, peculiar things would always occur around him, like his injuries would always heal quicker than expected, but jinhai brushed it off as a mutated gene within his genetics until his broken arm seemed to magically heal over night. now, that spooked him so badly that he literally cried to his parents and demonstrated his arm. his parents exchanged worried but proud looks at their son being a magi just like them. he proudly told his best friend, who in turn, was a magi themself, so their bond grew even closer!
so as expected, he was being trained for those three subject matters at his home back in china; yet, jinhai was more in tune with healing than the three mentioned areas of magic, exuberating ineffiency with the latter and high efficiency with the healing field. though, the area the zheng family and his best friend’s family currently resided in became too perilous due to several investigators being too close for comfort after jinhai had a terrifying experience with the ju jak, they packed up jinhai and sent him to seoul to live with his aunt and to enter an institute they heard caters to magi. perhaps his best friend experienced the same thing, but all jinhai knew was that the other moved away without saying a word to his family.
at first, jinhai refused, wanting to remain with his parents, but it was better to keep him safe as he always nervously watched his surroundings, not wanting a life of fear for their only son. so, the male relented since this life of peril wasn’t for him and it would be a good opportunity to travel to another country, thanks to having family over there.
he hasn’t been back to china in years, but he’s heard that his family were forced into hiding after being found by an amateur investigator on accident, receiving letters from them, updating that they are safe and he shouldn’t worry!! but all the male does is worry, so he always thinks about them whenever he gets homesick and has tried many times to go back to china before remembering that his parents wouldn’t want that. he’s also on the constant lookout for his childhood best friend.
miscellaneous
jinhai’s magic deals more with water properties, crystals, and light magic since they are most in-tune when it comes to healing. though, it also deals with more emotional state, so since he’s nervous all the time, it’s basically always cold around him
he has one sugar glider familiar named baobei because the sugar glider is basically his baby, whom he adores wholeheartedly.
speaks three languages fluently!! korean, mandarin chinese, and cantonese!! if he gets upset at you, he’ll probably end up speaking in chinese or cantonese, depending on what language might be understood much easier.
loves crystals!! because since his magic deals with it!! he uses the magical properties of crystals for anything!! has a huge box full of crystals that he likes collecting and making charmed bracelets out of them!!
is a huge cuddler, even if he won’t admit to it. gets really embarrassed if he’s called out on it or teased about being overly affectionate.
highly paranoid if he is unfamiliar with anything. treat him like a scared kitten, and then he’ll warm up to you. food and crystals probably help faster to get to know him.
has no sense of direction. this boy will get lost easily, even if you direct him on the right path. its a miracle how he’s survived so far tbh.
he loves conspiracy theories, ballet, musicals, and paranormal adventures. given the chance, he will go ghost hunting, even if he’ll end up getting scared the entire time and hiding behind someone, whether they are taller or shorter than him.
