She was bothered, to realize despite all he had done and the man the captain was, he still was the closest they all had to family. She doubted him, resisted him, wanted to get back at him for the way he had treated Eren, and yet she couldn’t but acknowledge his judgement, his decision to bring them all together, everyone close to Eren, all those who were ready to sacrifice their lives for him. She had come to respect him eventually, despite his absurd way of looking after them. They wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for him.

❝ It’s not like that, ❞ a weak protest. This man’s ability to speak and immediately negating any response, always irritated her. . . . and the warmth inside her would return, the moment their eyes met. There was no meaning in holding onto this meaningless cruel world, except for her SON.

Responsible she was, guilty as charged, for the caring man he had become. Always to think of others, instead of himself— of a mother unworthy of his love, a mother who had doomed him to darkness. And he’d sacrifice everything, to escape, and to get her out. In his efforts to escape, imprisoned to a title he’d become, humanity’s strongest soldier, with no chance to break free. She could see it in his eyes, the hell he had witnessed outside the walls, even worse than the underground. It was her fault —the path he had chosen, the life of a soldier. Nobody, not anyone in the entire world, not humanity, deserved him. No cause was worth sacrificing his tender heart for. But there was nothing she could do anymore. Powerless she was her entire life, a witness and at the mercy of everything she couldn’t CHANGE. Of losing him, to the hands of dead soldiers he vowed to fight for.

She bowed her head, lips pressing, her stomach turning. She didn’t like scolding him. And yet, she collected herself rather quickly, her expression serious, but never losing in tenderness. ❝ Stop, Levi. ❞ How much she wanted to reach for his hand, hold him tight into her arms, never letting him step outside that door again.
