"'astrid ain't ever gonna look at me again unless she's hating me'" is such an interesting line. if i'm remembering correctly it's the only real indicator we get of how orc perceives astrid (without the buffer of having to perform the bully role for sam) before we actually get his pov starting in hunger. I have vague half-formed analytical thoughts on this: the focus on "looking" as synonymous with being seen, inside and out, and judgement and condemnation, and how pitiful this desire is. he just wants to be looked at by her, nothing else. that's enough (at least for now 👀), and because of his evil actions he's bereft of even that.

I reread the first gone book in Spanish today and I’m sorry I know he’s basic and sucks sometimes but I love Sam Temple. 🥺

orc’s character works imo bc it doesn’t feel like the text’s clamoring for you to like him—at least, not in the way the narrative wants you to like caine. he’s basically a pathetic (as in pathos and the regular meaning lol) jerk whose big act of pseudo-redemption after bette’s murder is just to get more depressed and drunk and suicidal. his suffering does not make him good.

he still lacks empathy (he only thinks about saving dekka that one time because sam will reward him with beer if he does and after rescuing astrid and hunter from the human crew’s hanging he only asks if astrid’s okay, not the brain-damaged boy with one pupil bigger than the other) and fails at basically everything he sets out to do (guard drake/britney only to accidentally set them free, protect astrid from drake only to end up being an equally if not more dangerous threat to the girl he supposedly loves, get revenge for howard’s death only to end up not doing that for some reason i forget).

he’s too depressed to be an active menace but still manages to be a danger to everyone around him and himself. he just sucks. and that’s why he’s awesome 😎

the funny thing about orc x astrid is that it lowkey fits the corny bad guy/good girl trope but it works because orc is the one who's fully invested in the dynamic and is like "astrid you can fix me 🥺" and astrid is like "what? i don't want to do that 😒"
