"'astrid ain't ever gonna look at me again unless she's hating me'" is such an interesting line. if i'm remembering correctly it's the only real indicator we get of how orc perceives astrid (without the buffer of having to perform the bully role for sam) before we actually get his pov starting in hunger. I have vague half-formed analytical thoughts on this: the focus on "looking" as synonymous with being seen, inside and out, and judgement and condemnation, and how pitiful this desire is. he just wants to be looked at by her, nothing else. that's enough (at least for now š), and because of his evil actions he's bereft of even that.
