A nearly-forgotten tradition of craft brewing roars back to life near downtown Los Angeles thanks to Alan Newman of Alchemy & Science, and brewmaster Dieter Foerstner. The City of Angels just got a bit brighter.
PETE COORS IS BRINGING BACK BANQUET — HOW THE CRAFT CONSUMER IS CHANGING THINGS, EVEN FOR THE BIG GUYS
Pete Coors has been quietly sitting on a gold mine. While competitors continue to gut the authenticity of their brands, Coors Banquet enters this competitive market with a brand that's gone largely unnoticed, and therefore unscathed, for a long time.
AN INDUSTRY ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION WITH SAM CALAGIONE OF DOGFISH HEAD
Taking advantage of Sam's presence in the city for an afternoon, I gathered a few great Chicago beer minds, people I admire and work with on a daily basis, to facilitate a discussion about some of the larger, looming issues of the craft market.

Some things that I'll cover include:

HITTING THE MAINSTREAM — LEARNING TO SWIM
Chicago may be a bit behind the national curve in craft beer adoption, but it's already seeing the success, and challenges, of hitting mainstream audiences who have different expectations for their dollars, time and experience.
MIDDLE BROW BREWING — HUMILITY IN THE MAKING
Middle Brow Brewing isn't trying to big-time it. In fact, they're specifically keeping things modest.
This week marks the 25th anniversary of Goose Island in Chicago. It's been a dramatic few years for the company, growing rapidly as Chicago's lead craft brewery during the surge, first partnering and eventually selling the operation to Anheuser-Bush, and finally giving birth to a number of fresh Chicago breweries by way of a continuously ambitious talent pool.
3 FLOYDS' DARK LORD DAY — THE MONSTERS OF MUNSTER, INDIANA
The unassailable chaos and camaraderie of one of craft beer's most famous festivals. And a look at what Dark Lord Day means to some of 3 Floyd's and GBH's biggest fans.
Today I'm drinking their Crash Landed American Pale Wheat Ale. It's a sharp, well-bittered ale with some citrus and perfume in the aroma, backed by a slightly fruity and malty wheat backbone. The amber-golden color and medium body provide an uncommon richness in a standard wheat. 7%. Enjoy your Friday afternoon. And kick off the weekend with Begyle's Crash Landed
HUNTER GATHERER POSTER BY ANDREW WRIGHT
35.00
Andrew Wright is a Chicago-based artist, illustrator, and craft beer enthusiast. He's produced incredible work for Field & Stream, The Wall Street Journal, and Bow Truss Coffee Roasters right here in Chicago. He was originally featured on Good Beer Hunting as "Hunter Gatherer No. 10" — Since then, he's become a great friend and collaborator, helping conceive the first in a series of seasonal Good Beer Hunting screenprinted posters. This is the first in that series.
In Andrew's honor, we called this first run of posters "Hunter Gatherer."
Andrew created four separate color linocuts and hand pulled the original prints to capture the unmistakable texture and nuance of the process. From there, we worked with Delicious Design League in Chicago to create the screens and perfect the colors for the poster run. It's printed on French 100lb Kraft paper at 18"x24" with a stunning color and texture. Each print is signed and number by Andrew, and embossed with the "GBH & Co." representing a great collaboration sketched out over many great beers.
Saveur magazine has added beer blogs to their Best Food Blog competition this year for the first time, and yours truly is one of the six finalists! It's an incredible honor for any food and beverage writer, and I would love to have your support. So please, if you love beer as much as I do, and if GBH has made a difference in your love for that beer, toss me a high-five by voting for me in the competition!
The ladies and gents at Solemn Oath come from many backgrounds as writers, fashion designers, brewers and artists. The culmination of those talents makes them an ideal starting place for Apartment Number 9's mission to export more of Chicago's culture to the rest of the nation.
I'm kicking off the first weekend of Spring with a couple of new local stars, only available in the Chicagoland area. Because we're Chicago, and when Spring hovers around 30 degrees, we deserve a little shot in the arm, dammit.
