Im loving these oposing comments, gives a really deep meaning to the song. However im still pumping the song on my playlist. Its upbeat, fun, giving a not too worry attitude that I am happy to go along with. Im interested in what others have to say, but sometimes I feel you cant delve too deep into life; as we all well know, nothing will ever be perfect!
Final posting
What a whirlwind this project has been. Similar to others, I was quite dumbfounded when first realising a tumblr was required for the course, yet interested. Social media is an attribute to the adolescent generation, which I can easily relate too - for communication, news, and now school work! It seems a great way for people to express themselves, and over time it seems to become more personal as the individuals skills develop. I, myself, can see a pattern of my posts; of things i'm interested in, and whats important to me, mainly by photos and articles. Overall I enjoyed this project, as opens a new pathway to show the knowledge being learnt.

Usual support groups turn away transgender people trying to leave abusive relationships, say experts.
When in a dyad relationship (friendships or partners, boys and/or girls) walls of ones self are brought down. The way the pair act around each other alone, may differ slightly, or largely whilst in others gaze. It seems "physical" and "verbal" are the first thoughts when abuse is mentioned; the dominator of the relationship having the role as victimiser. Yet this can be conversed if emotional abuse occurs; it may be the passive person who acts deviously playing mind games.I
I went looking for a quote that I could sum up my view on the love in peer relationships... but there were way too many to choose from! So many touched me with kind words, which I can relate to my own friendships over the years! I’m so thankful for these people, whether it was a friendship for a day, a month, or a century.
These two chickadees on either side of me are some of the most supportive, influential, crazy, amazing, inspiring, people I’ve ever met. I’ve known both of them since intermediate, approximately 7years ago! I met them at different times, for different reasons, and at a similar time they became friends as well. All of us have different personalities, likes and dislikes, but our outgoing, fun-loving, caring characters bring us together. Over the period of the friendships we’ve drifted apart; found our own passions, pathways and other peer groups. Now years later after our secondary schooling we’ve remained friends with close bonds. Relationships with these girls has been dissimilar than with others. They provide friendship which covers the six functions which Gottman and Parker (as cited in Santrock, 2014) reveal of importance: companionship, stimulation, physical support, ego support, social comparison, and intimacy. As we’ve matured these aspects have developed, parallel to ourselves; growing the value of our treasured connections.
Premarital cohabitation has been positively correlated with marital instability and higher rates of divorce (Santrock, 2014). Other research advises this apparent positive relationship is weaker or even negatively associated than thought (Reinhold, 2010). Furthermore, explanations for why living together before marriage is said to result in more failed marriages seems to be linked to the lifestyle and beliefs of those who do it, rather than understanding the reasons people stay in marriages.
For instance, those who are less likely to cohabit before or without marriage may have less or no religious affiliations and may be less inclined to stay in a relationship they feel is unsatisfying or domineering. Whereas couples with higher religiosity may deem divorce as sinful regardless of marital satisfaction.
Another explanation for variation in the association between premarital cohabitation and marital instability may be the cultural/environmental differences between racial/ethnic groups. Reinhold (2010) found marriage resolution after premarital cohabitation is greater for non-Hispanic white women but not for Mexican American women and non-Hispanic blacks, even though cohabitation is more common in these groups than among non-Hispanic white women.
Clearly there is a large scope for further research on the relationship between cohabitation and marital in/stability.
This post caught my eye. Premarital cohabitation leading to marital instability was an interesting concept uncovered to me by Santrock (2014). I class myself at the moment of transitioning out of adolescence and diverging into early adulthood, therefore the matter of cohabitation and marriage associates closely to my age group. However, the fact that living together lead may to possible divorce shocked me. My opinion is that I would definitely need to live with someone for a few years before I shared the rest of my life with them; I’ve learnt from flatting, you don’t truly know someone until you’ve lived with them! But then again, that is a preference of action on my part. It is possible after living together for a few months, and getting married, may result in finding out 5-10years later it’s not quite what one had really wanted. It’s a scary thought to be in a situation as so. The relationship with a beloved peer, which was once sacred, turns into a broken wreck; forming several on-going hardships to the lives of both partners.
All of the programs above aroused my little adolescent mind not to many years ago!! Excitement in friendships and sexuality with boyfriends – the GOOD, the BAD, and the UGLY. I was fascinated with the peer relationships of the characters.
Friends was the first show I remember lightly analysing. Watching the dynamics of the 6 manned clique. They all had rather different personalities, yet it seemed the supportive loving friendships they gave each other held them together.
The OC was second. This show for me was another level of emotional intensity. I’d say I was about 14/15yrs watching this and I was hooked. It was different from friends as they characters were younger, and most known each other since young. Risk-taking (alcohol, drugs, sex, and crime) was often involved. To me the show highlighted the response to peers actions, whether they were pressured to join in the risk, or stray away from the friendship as a consequence.
Gossip girl was another show I enjoyed whilst a teen, ~16yrs old. It gave me a view on the heights popularity can soar too. Also it revealed to me that control and deviance does occur in peer relationships. The emerging connections between boys and girls are presented, facing problems such as cultural refusal, and parental judgement. Yet shone light onto the reality of breakups and cheating, leading to a depressive end of a once positive peer relationship.
I would not say these programs distinctly developed my social skills with peers. I would however, say they portrayed ideas (such as expressiveness of feelings, and cheating vs keeping loyal), which I could assess as acceptable or not for my own future approach to peer relationships.
Parents are a central aspect to adolescent lives, whose guidance can influence the positive or negative pathways of development. Baumrind was the first to officially define numerous parenting styles. She seemed to believe success of parenting is achieved by setting rules, but showing affection (the authoritative style). Adolescence is a significant time for experimentation in finding identity, therefore an even balance of freedom and control by parents highly sought after. If too much control is applied a teen may not be able to expand their own views, and pursue opportunities, yet conversely too much freedom can give chance for involvement in substance abuse, or withdrawal from schooling or family relationships. Evidence seems to portray that without parental action and love it puts the adolescent in a harder environment to evolve.
First borns turn into leaders, middle children into negotiators and last borns challengers of authority.
Of the "profiles" from the article above do any characteristics relate to your siblings or self? Often the relationships between brothers and sisters further evolve during adolescence; negatively or positively. This is likely due to the self-developing characteristics. It is these characteristics which several studies have researched as noted by O'Connor (2014), and Santrock (2014):
First born: Organized, leadership
Middle born: Flexible, pacemakers
Last born: Risk takers, creative
These characteristics have been seen as strong predictors of adolescent behavior, but highly over emphasized. Yet every so often individuals may not follow these forecasts of personality, other aspects of lifestyle can be effectors, such as divorce, death, and social influence of peers. Santrock (2014) provides evidence and understanding to back up O’Conner’s article: leadership and is seen as a first born characteristic, likely due to the responsibility placed on them for future siblings and high expectations for their first parenting experience. I feel the over emphasis is due to the simplicity of the ideas and the ease to categorize an individual into, but also can be an interesting comparison of personality.
Family is hugely important to my life. This is a photo of my mother, my (younger!!) brother, and myself back in April when we had a vacay in Rarotonga!! Yet, this is not the whole of my family, my father passed away 5 years ago in a highway motor accident. I also hold my extended family extremely close to my heart, we've lost several grandparents and a great uncle, but gained a second cousin (a niece to my mum). So as it is, our family portrait has has changed a lot over the years, just as most things in life do.
Change in the structure of family is inevitable. Divorce, sickness, job loss, even just the development of children to adulthood changes family dynamics. Strength and growth of relationships over this period also vary.
The combination of all these aspects affects the individual, making their own life experience unique. I believe in many ways the experiences molds who they become.
For me, the loss of several family members has helped me to express my feelings and love in relationships further strengthening, becoming more connected. I've also learnt the habit of looking for the silver lining in every situation, and that a smile can go a long way.
When thinking about your own family past, what specific situations have directly affected you, and how?
Values, beliefs, morals.
These are all extremely important to one’s own development. The choices made springing from opportunity rely on these, affecting other areas of life.
I feel an unconscious decision of my own is too surround myself with peers with similar values; four main examples below:
Respect for others
Healthy living
Positivity & Optimism
“Work hard, play hard” motive
Sharing values allows for similar actions when events occur, knowing that someone will have your back, and support you if others feel differently or you are knocked down.
Wealth is another value I feel is of importance, having special things once deserving them seems justified. However only to an extent, it seems money is focused on too much with modern technology development; egotistic, materialistic mannerisms seem to develop more (sometimes) if a power with wealth is felt.

Thinking back to where my morals evolved, Boulcott School stands out. My first primary school experience started 15 years ago, in 1999! The school was medium sized, had amazing teachers, excellent facilities, and a positive vibe. Without knowing, we, as students were engaging with our moral development. Respect for teachers, a conscience for others, and a relative understanding of the "good" vs "bad" decisions of life began to blossom. The combination of the hidden curriculum, and character education provided an atmosphere where literacy/mathematical knowledge could grow in parallel with moral education.
I've just gone back to look at the schools website (and facebook page!) to see how its going; I came across the image below. The picture is a strong representation of the schools values, and represent the morals underlying the teaching.
I was so lucky to attend such a great education service, and believe the input which was put into my moral development then, has truly helped to guide me though the continuous pathways of life.
To me, the association of moral thought, and moral behaviour is connected. Santrock (2014) however displays an understanding of the unrelated relationship of the two moralities, and also how one individual can sway themselves away from their original morals.
My moral thoughts show in my behaviour, I would never steal anything on purpose from a shop, business, or market as I understand that the owner deserves receiving my money, as they are providing a service for my use. I know I could not steal on purpose as my conscience would be guilt ridden. Once I accidentally took a dress from a clothing store; it was draped over my arm with my handbag so walked out! As soon as I noticed I ran back to the store, handed it back to the retail worker; she had not even noticed I had taken it.
Disparities of thought and behaviour does occur. It is likely others in my situation may have had the moral thought to never steal an item, yet instead of running back and returning the item, just carrying on with their day and keeping it. This action would show the individuals separation in moral thought from moral behaviour.
How one can sway their moral thoughts to advocate their behaviour is also prevalent in individuals. The picture above is of the Twin Towers attacks of 2001, this event links to the idea that “heinous actions can be cloaked by a mantel of moral virtue” (Santrock, 2014, p235). It is like individual’s need to twist the truth to justify their actions with otherwise they may see as morally wrong. It is this difference of moral thought leading to behaviours, which makes terrorists actions hard to comprehend by other people effected by the actions.

This is a quote from a recent article on Stuff. I can completely relate; I work on Friday afternoons in retail, which leads me to be walking home at 7pm. Street lamps lighten up the darkness, yet whistles, toots, and yells still occur. I'm not a huge individual, so if one of these 'hooters' were to pull over and try to sexually assault me I would not be able to do much other than yell. The reason for comment on my job relates to the above quote. When I go to work I am expected to look stylish and young; skirts and heels are common dress items... however when it comes to the thought of walking home this changes to some style sneaks and fashion tights. In no way am I blaming my job for clothing code, or the council for limiting street lights. However I do ask, why should I need to change? Why should I need to do this? The rape culture of New Zealand is more normalized as ever, which is an extremely worrying topic for communities. There seems there is only so much we can do for prevention, but once again education of the topic is of grave importance.
Along with the actions of intercourse, sexually transmitted infections (STI) can arise. Family planning is a not-for-profit organization, aiming to provide education and a positive view on sexuality. They provide a range of clinical services including consultation on STI's, contraception, and pregnancy. Estimations are that 1 in 4 sexually active youth can catch a STI, an alarming figure, which calls for a need to action. Youth pregnancy is also prevalent so consultation and protection against are also integral areas of the clinics services. Education is stressed at Family Planning for the benefit of adolescents. An article from the New Zealand Herald in 2011 "good sex studies works - studies" stressed this importance; encouraging initiatives in schools, allowing expansion of knowledge on all the sexual topics for the younger adolescents (7yo - 13yo).
Sexuality is a significant element of adolescence. Whilst one’s physical sex characteristics are growing, cognitive function is expanding, and new psychosocial emotions are occurring; outside peers, culture, media are all strong influences. Alike to each person’s character, their drive for sexuality is unique. The image above depicts the range of reasons for one’s sexual behavior. “Because I love you”, “too commune with god”, or “to make a baby” are all extremely distinct motives from the list. The decision to engage in activity is highly dependent on the prompting factors such as: Physical (stress relief, pleasure), Goal-based (improved social status), Emotional (commitment), Insecurity (boosting self esteem). It is the way these actions occur, which can effect how others perceive and treat the individual - affecting further life development. Have a quick think to yourself when reading though the list; which boxes would you most likely tick? and compare them to the boxes you would judge negatively.
