I think it’s interesting Curly says the story of La Llorona is universal because there is literally an alternate telling of 産女(ubume) that has her leaving the body of her child in the arms of people who are haunted by her. There must be some version of this tale in nearly every culture.

On the other side of my heritage there is Mami Wata, a water deity from west Africa who drowns anyone who is sexually enticed by her. It appears to be a running theme cross culturally that some version of a siren, banshee, mermaid or spirit who drowns people out of vengeance.

incredibly common. this is why i Loved the line about the story being about cultural anxieties surrounding sex. and, oh man, it’s late and i’m tired and my brain is what it is so i really don’t mean to hijack/write unnecessary things here, but i literally just finished putting together a presentation on lilith (jewish mythology) for a conference this weekend. lilith, as well, is a figure defined both by a frightening female sexuality and a penchant for infanticide. there’s so much to say about figures like these and the ways in which the telling of them will shift slightly depending on cultural needs.

it reminds me of this line from deathless by catherine valente about the rusalka (slavic folklore) “A farmer wants his son to be afraid of beautiful women, so that he will not leave home too soon, so he tells a story about how one drowned his brother’s cousin’s friend in a lake, not because he was a pig who deserved to be drowned, but because beautiful women are bad, and also witches. And it doesn’t matter that she didn’t ask to be beautiful, or to be born in a lake, or to live forever, or to not know how men breathe until they stop doing it. “
