        Impatience pushes the boy forward to follow after his mentor’s movements. Masked eyes PEEK over the bat’s shoulder, monitoring the progress in the any way he could and attempting to gauge just how long this process might take ( perhaps, that would best pass the time ). A slight frown threatens to overtake the boy’s expression. PATIENCE is a virtue, one that he, at times, found difficult to grasp. Nevertheless, he had been groomed better than to urge a mentor to rush through evaluating evidence. That certainly won’t stop him from exuding a RESTLESS demeanor.

 After a moment of unbroken concentration, the boy’s huffing, moving around, & peering over their shoulder was beginning to grate on their own patience. Bruce, for the moment, ceased the movement of their hands, closed their eyes, & took a deep breath: in through the nose, out the mouth. If only to save Damian from the brunt of their temper.  

“Why don’t you take a look at it instead, Damian.” If only to stop you from breathing down my neck.

“—— ‘S Christmastime.” She’s looking at him like What does it look like I’m doing here, what else would I be doing here, don’t you know what time it is, don’t you know what this means? You have a family, don’t you? You love people, don’t you? “An’ Hanukkah. I’m buying presents.” She holds the bags up. Gives them a little shake. You know– presents? The things you give to people you care about for various holidays across various cultures?

“What are you doing here? Aint’choo got shoppin’ t’ do f’r all yer li’l sidekicks an’ stuff?”

 “So I’m aware.” They reply, crossing wide arms across their chest and giving her that signature look of theirs -- the one that made its victim surprisingly aware of the cynical expression that was radiating beneath the inky cowl. 

(And regarding the sidekicks comment, of coursethey had already gotten things for the kiddos. But Harley didn’t necessarily have to know that. Gotta stay on track, here.)

“No. You’ve been at large for almost two months.” They reply, their stony voice still remaining stoic and emotionless. “So what I’m saying is... what are you doing here, Harleen.”

“– WHOAWHOAWHOAWHOA, hold on, I paid f’r these, okay? I paid for ‘em, fair ‘n’ square, with my own money, look, I c’n show y’ th’ receipt–”

Plastic bags crinkle noisily as she digs the receipt out of her purse, and the little slip is shoved out at the offending do-gooder. True to her word, there’s about four inches worth of Toys R Us merchandise rung up on that paper.

“There. See? ‘S completely legal.”

(Never mind the fact that she’s currently a wanted prison escapee.)

  A cowled gaze flits upon the sheet of paper for only a moment before they return to the slightly panicked woman in front of them. Not the first time they’ve run into Harleen when she’s out of costume, but that didn’t make it any less STRANGE, like something had shifted in the atmosphere between them. 

 No, the toys aren’t the issue. The issue is how she broke out of Arkham a month or two ago, caused a fuss, and had been unfound ever since. It wasn’t a pressing matter yet, so Bruce had let it be. They were, to say the least, rather relieved that she had fallen into their hands at this point -- made the Christmas season a little less stressful. 

 “What are you doing here.”  It’s not a what are you doing Christmas shopping or what are you doing on this side of Gotham kind of question, but more of a firm shouldn’t you be in prison? Their voice is even, perhaps merciless. 

(Bruce could almost hear Dick’s nagging of come on B, it’s Christmas!, were he here. Thankfully, Robin wasn’t, so Bruce could actually uphold the law like they wanted to without any interruptions.)

It says something that Badger’s kicks at the hero are the ineffectual, childish kind, and not the full-forced ones they both know he’s capable of. He’s fake-swinging at Batman, too. “Yes it is! They looked at me funny! They said bad words!”

 They almost want to cry that’s all!? in exasperation, but they just barely hold it down. Why was Gotham so full of jerks? “... No reason to break their legs.” Bruce manages calmly. “I’m going to have to take you in.” (Bring out the BAT-CUFFS!) If he was allowed to arrest people for profanity, 99% of Gotham would be in jail.

  They’re lifting him up by the scruff of his shirt, near-effortlessly with one arm. “That’s not necessary.” Bruce could already feel a migraine coming on -- the GCPD was going to give them hell if they thought they were practicing some kind of extreme-violent vigilante justice or something.

A hand formerly outstretched hesitantly retracts, and eventually falls into the inky cloak that laid over broad shoulders. It was fair. It was justified. But it served to prick Bruce’s heart further. Their relationship with Jason felt an awful lot like a sick game where one pushes a needle into a balloon further and further until it pops. The two players watch in anticipation, in fear, in anxiety, waiting for when the fatal thing would blow up.

When would that bursting point be?

Their chest inflated and deflated in a soundless sigh, and they turned their head away with an expression akin to mourning. “I’m... sorry, Jason.”

 “I know you can.” It’s too risky. I don’t know what I’d do if you slipped up and something happened. I couldn’t live with that. It’s too unsafe. I’m worried about you. I... “... I need to clear my head. I’m going alone.”

“ it won’t stop bleeding! ”

 “Shouting isn’t going to stop it from bleeding.” The Bat responds, attempting to keep their voice even but firm. The younger’s wound wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been -- but then again, that didn’t stop the fact that it was bleeding profusely. “-- Just trust me. I can help, but you have to stop ... panicking.”

“ that’s… a lot of blood ”

 “I’m taking. Care. Of it.” Bruce replies gruffly, working diligently to patch up the wounds of the victim in front of them. It was quite a grotesque sight, and the witch behind him’s words rang true: sticky, warm redness seemed to stain Bruce’s hands and shoes and clothes, along with the alley around them. They hated being too late to save a person from harm altogether; now, however, was not the time to be kicking themself for being a second off. All they could do now was patch them up and pray. “-- Help or leave.” They say through gritted teeth as they rip off a long piece of gauze from their belt.
