A US B24H Liberator from 783rd Squadron, 465t BG, 15th Air Force is hit by anti-aircraft fire over Germany
On 20 November 1944, the B-24H Liberator “853” was leading the 55th Bomb Wing over Germany when a direct flak hit ripped into the aircraft between the engine and fuselage at 23,000 feet. The wing began tearing off as the bomber rolled into flames, giving the crew only 2–3 seconds to escape before the aircraft exploded in mid-air. One airman parachuted through fire with a damaged chute, another was trapped inside a burning turret without escape, while others were blown clear by the blast itself. Only six crewmen survived the destruction of “853”.

The greatest generation....
The Royal Hungarian Air Force has purchased the license to manufacture the airframe locally, since the C version already used the DB605, built also locally in Hungary for the Bf 109G-6. All in all 179 aircraft were used by the RHAF, mostly for CAS missions. While used also against Allied heavy bombers, they have proven an easy prey to the US fighters (P-38 and P-51). As always, I attach the original I worked with. Due to the poor image quality, the resulting image is not perfect, but I did my best.
