Mulan is one of the most well known children’s movies of all time. It is about a girl in China during a time of war and pretends to be a man to fight in her father’s place. It is inspirational, and will continue to be passed down through generations as a favorite.
Steve Aoki is a famous music producer in the United States. Most of the people in our generation at least know who he is and his music is widely listened to. Steve was born in America but his father is from Japan, and was actually a famous wrestler there.
In class this week, we watched the movie Big Hero 6. It was a very interesting tie in with American culture. The name of the town was Sanfransokyo, and there were people that appeared to be of Asian descent and of American descent. Overall I really enjoyed the movie and felt that it tied into the course well.
Amusement Parks are found all across the globe. There are thrill seekers on every continent looking for a good time. Japan and the United States are two countries that have a good amount of theme parks. These can run from mild for kids to extreme for the most adventurous daredevils.
Baseball is known as America’s pastime. It is also a very popular sport worldwide in South American countries as well as Asian countries. Many people who play in the American leagues come from many different countries, and some of the best players in the world come out of countries like Japan.
This is a link to the Apple Products website in Japan. Apple was founded in California, and its influences has spread all across the United States and the world. In Asia, Apple products are quite popular and can be seen frequently. There are Apple Stores in Japan just as there are in America.
Running Man EP: 84 and 85
I really enjoyed these two episodes of the running man show. The episode was made more interesting because it included the members of the musical group Big Bang. In the beginning of the English 103 semester, we spent a good amount of time watching music videos from G-Dragon, Daesong, and Taeyang. It was interesting to see what these guys were like and how they interacted outside of the musical spotlight. As for the content of the episodes, it was quite captivating. From the moment the Running Man crew drove in in modified jeeps and Big Bang flew in on helicopters, I knew that it was going to be a good episode. There is a lot of comedy throughout the episodes, especially in the beginning when they were discussing rules before the games began. Though a lot of the jokes are funny, because of the subtitles and the speed of talking, it can be hard to follow at times. Also many of the situations seem set up and sort of cheesy. This cheesiness aspect seems to be what people who regularly watch the show enjoy. Its a different kind of humor than what I'm used to, but it still made me laugh quite often. The idea for the games played were awesome. Taking the cast first to a museum, and then to an office building were cool. For the first part of the show, one team had to hide while finding running man tickets hidden throughout the museum while the other team was chasing them. It seemed like it would be sort of boring to watch at first, but I quickly realized the amount of excitement within the show. For the second episode, the task was to find authorized signature pads throughout an office building and get them signed while the other team was chasing you and trying to get out. One great thing that the show has going for it is that there is never a dull aspect. Whether it is all a big setup or if every minute of it is real, it captivates the audience and it is easy to tell why it is such a popular show. It is not something I could see myself watching a lot, mainly because I do not particularly enjoy reading subtitles while I am trying to enjoy a show or movie, but it was highly entertaining and fun. One of my favorite parts about the experience of watching was getting to begin to tell some of the Big Bang members apart and remember which one is which. When you are watching their music videos and they all have on makeup, crazy clothes, and a crazy colored hairstyle, it can be difficult to tell which one is which. Also, they don’t seem quite as weird as they do in their music videos. I remember that when we watched the first G-Dragon video in class, I did not like G-Dragon at all. I thought he was very strange and that he was trying to hard. Also, it seemed like he was making the same kinds of music as the American Top 40 which I do not really enjoy listening to. This show gave us the chance to see them in the real world as normal people, and it was quite refreshing that they do not take that persona from their videos and use them in their everyday lives.

As in America, the New Year is a big deal in Japan. They have many of their own traditions like America does, and they put up many decorations. Also they send postcards for the New Year with pictures of their families similar to American Christmas cards.
Bathrooms are a large part of any culture, and Japan takes them to the next level. In Japan, the toilets are all automated. With buttons to do many different things from flushing to playing music, they are futuristic compared to in America. It will be interesting in the coming years to see if America adopts these sorts of toilets.
In class this Thursday, we did origami paper folding. In this class session we made a bunny and swan. Paper folding is a common aspect of Japanese culture and is a fun way to interact with Japanese culture. It was a very fun class time activity.
Social media is a huge aspect of life in today's technological age. Twitter has become extremely popular in the United Staes as well as Japan and other Asian countries. It is a great way to communicate and keep up with what is going on in the world.
Travel is a huge aspect of many cultures, and with countries as big as Japan and the United States, it is an important aspect of life. Many airlines have sprouted up across the world, many of which are from America and Asia. This is a picture of a plane from a Japanese airline.
As many Japanese made cars are sold in the United States, many American cars are sold in Japan. The automobile market is one of the biggest in the world. Cars from all over have an impact on many different countries.
This is an advertisement for the Disney Resort in Tokyo. Disney began in the United States and with the addition of multiple theme parks in the country, its influence on young Americans skyrocketed. Disney is still one of the most well known industries in the United States and has spread that influence to other countries like Japan, where they have created another park.
This is a picture of a KFC restaurant in Japan. Many American restaurants, especially fast food, have moved over to other countries, especially in Asia. Also in this photograph, the American idea of what Santa looks like is displayed next to the registers, which shows an influence in that respect as well.
Soccer is the most widely played and watched sport in the world. The United States and China both share a large interest in soccer, and both compete at the national level. This is a picture of China’s national team.
Drifting is a popular sport that originated in the mountains of Japan. Interested in the art of sliding cars sideways, many Americans began to build cars and created a league in the United States. The league is called Formula Drift and is quite popular among car enthusiasts in America and Japan.
