Leon froze for a second after being called out, then awkwardly pushed a few branches aside before stepping out of the bushes with all the dignity of a man who had absolutely none left.

“Yeah, okay, in my defense, this looked less weird in my head.”

He rubbed the back of his neck, eyes flicking over her quickly like he was checking for injuries without meaning to make it obvious.

“Just making sure you were alright. You’ve got a habit of getting yourself into trouble.” A pause. Softer, quieter: “Figured somebody should check on you.”

Then, immediately deflecting:

“And before you say anything, no, standing in bushes is not my standard surveillance procedure.”
