“-- Don’t touch that!”
Hi, I saw you moving in earlier amd I thought I'd say hi. I guess we're neighbours. I'm Jules. I live next door. ~JC
“Oh, hey Jules. I’m Grace. Postgrad student.”
Jules smiled back. “Thanks. You know, nobody’s ever said that to me before… I’m a vet student. First year.”
“Really? How comes?” Grace frowned slightly, suddenly feeling slightly protective of the first year. “I have a friend who’s a vet -- I can set you up with work experience if you like.”

System Failure || Vic & Grace
Vic had never been in the computer labs this late. Not even the usual burnouts were here rushing assignments that were due in the next day. In fact, all the computers seemed to be off. Strange. Maybe there was some kind of system failure. Not my problem, he thought to himself. I’ve got to be at the Vault in an hour. I just need to find my bastard phone and get out of here.
He was startled to hear a voice coming from under one of the desks and ducked down to see who it was. He recognised her as one of the PhD students - they’d never spoken, but she had a haughty air about her. Thinks she can order me about just because I’m a lowly first year. Bloody PhD students. “Nope,” he replied, still just about managing to appear amenable. “I only came here to look for my phone. You haven’t seen it, have you?”
“At least pass me my phone then?” Grace refrained from rolling her eyes. “It’s by the keyboard, and no, I haven’t seen your phone. Maybe you flushed it down the loo.” Grace offered him a saracastic smile, before returning her gaze to the wires. The man seemed impatient, and Grace had no problem with winding him up -- she was nice like that. Her annoyance levels were peeking as the problem went on -- she was pretty sure she had saved the darn essay, but she wasn’t sure. If she hadn’t, then she was screwed. She didn’t have time for random computer breakdowns, that wasn’t in her job description anymore.
Sighing, Grace looked at him again. “Your phone is probably in one of the boxes, the technicions leave them either the green or the blue if they find a phone.” She paused, taking a calming breath (that wasn’t so calming). “I’m Grace. PHD student.” A PHD student in desperate need of an essay and a promotion. She had work tomorrow after class, which she was not looking forward to. She needed to keep on top of everything before she lost all the support of the company and wound up not completing the course. “You got a name then?”
“Oh, wow. Which company do you work for? And what position will you be promoted to?”
“I work for Sandbrook Inc. - they’re a good company, with this PHD I’m potentially going to become a systems Systems Developer.”

“Oh, hey Jules. I’m Grace. Postgrad student.”
“Lucky you. My parents are paying for my degree, which means I get to be forever in their debt as well as being a constant disappointment… I’m sorry. I’m rambling. Forget I said that. It’s been a long day.”
“It’s because you don’t get student loans for postgrad studies, if you’re company offer to pay, you bloody take that offer.” Grace offered him a smile. “Hey, I bet you’re gonna do amazing. What are you studying?”

“Oh, hey Jules. I’m Grace. Postgrad student.”
“Great. So… what do you do, then?”
“I’m a data analysist at Sandbrook Tech. They’re the ones paying for my PHD so…”
System Failure || Vic & Grace
It was late, and Grace was up late. She wasn’t sure what time it was anymore, but she knew it was passed midnight, and she’d been in the library computer labs since six pm that evening. Being a PHD student was tougher than she thought it would be - but she was good with computers, it came naturally to her. And besides, who didn’t like a challenge? It was exciting to be learning new thnigs. New things that could get her a promotion, or even a better job.
Grace was up late working on her essay for her coding class. She had to keep on top of work if she was going to balance her full-time job as well as do all three years at Holborn. She was lucky in the respect that her company was paying her to do it, but she didn’t want her life to be utterly consumed by work. She had paused to read through her final paragraph when the screen turned black. Taken back in shock, Grace stared at the screen for a few moments. After trying to turn it back on again, she let out a huff and crawled down under the computer desk.Â
“Damn...” She muttered to herself. She couldn’t see it properly, but she sure one of the wires had just busted. Noticing a pair of feet come to stand beside the desk, Grace frowned, but then she had an idea. “Hey, you got a phone light? I need to see what’s up with these wires.”
“Ha, yeah, probably, knowing postgrads. Maybe I’ll find something better with a part time job…”
“I’m Gemima, by the way, or Gem, if you’re into nicknames. You?”
"See, my company is paying for this PHD. They want me to do it so they can promote me, and I need a PHD to be promoted.”
“I’m Grace. Nice to meet you, Gem.”
“Stop fucking me over, you infernal machine!”Â
“Faulty computer? Want me to take a look?”

“Oh, hey Jules. I’m Grace. Postgrad student.”
“Hi, Grace. Listen, I didn’t really plan what I was going to say beyond introducing myself, but I just thought it would be nice if we could be friends? Since we’re neighbours and all. I’m sorry, I’m terrible at this.”
“Sure Jules. I’m always gonna be next door when you need me... except for when I’m at work. Then I'm not available.”
“Oh great…Trust me to miss out on all the good societies already…”
“You too, eh? Must be a postgrad thing... Although, I do have a job to keep up with, so it’s probably for the best.”

“I’m blonde, but I’m not that blonde.”
Moving to England from Quebec, Canada, at the age of 15, Grace has retained her Canadian accent throughout her life in England. Joining a secondary school in North London, the Canadian took a liking to I.T, going on to do it in her GCSEs. Despite the move to a whole new country, Grace had a normal childhood. She was raised by her mother and father, and it was due to her mother’s work that the family packed up and moved to the UK. Grace never saw much of her parents, as they were usually working. She mostly spent her teen years with the housekeeper, whom Grace became very close to. Her year eleven I.T teacher influenced her love for technology, and encouraged her to keep at it through her A-Levels. Grace finished A-Levels with two A’s and an A* in Computer Science. It only made sense for her to study it at university. She did her BSc in Computer Science at the University of East Anglia, arriving there on an unconditional offer. When she left university with her degree at the age of 22, graduating top of her class, Grace wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. She joined a company as an I.T consultant at first, and soon rose through the ranks to Data Administrator. Her boss thought it was best for her to get her PHD in computer science for her to further her career, and the company would pay for it in full. It was everything Grace dreamed of, and accepted the offer with a firm yes. Joining Holborn University at the age of 26 as a postgraduate was a strange feeling for Grace. But it was also a good feeling. While she was also employed by her company, for the next three years she’d also be a student again, but this time she was going to emerge with her PHD. Returning to university, Grace isn’t sure what to expect this time around, especially as she’s returning as an older student. She’s hoping to one day leave the company she’s with now, but knows that in order to do that, she must graduate with a PHD, and she must do her very best while studying.
