This video is so inspiring.
Do you remember the hunger as a child? Oh, yeah. I do. I just remember waking up every day and wondering what I was gonna eat, if I was gonna eat. People would look at me and go, âOh, I know sheâs poor.â I would think, âJust give me some food and I can take care of the rest.â Just give me some fuel, you know? But there was such a shame and stigma attached to it. - Viola Davis
how can you like malfoy???
I honestly believe that Draco is one of the most dynamic characters in the whole series, and shows more growth and development than anyone else. He has so much inner turmoil and pressure on him growing up, especially in his adolescent years, and finds himself caught between doing what his father and their leader wants, and doing what he believes is right.
Draco is raised by a pureblood family, surrounded by Death Eater propaganda and under the firm prejudices of his father and fatherâs friends. His father, a true coward and bully, worked to crush all weakness and compassion out of him, rather filling him with hatred for those âbeneathâ them (muggle borns, half bloods and those who choose to associate with them). He is a product of his horrible upbringing in which heâs only heard what his racist parents and their friends taught him. Our views are formed by those around us, so itâs only natural that when Draco starts at Hogwarts, he arrives with prejudices of his own. On his first day of school, he reaches out to befriend Harry, only to be rejected in front of their peers. A humiliating moment that sealed their enemy status. Naturally, heâs sorted into Slytherin, where his views are not only then supported, but further engrained by those he spends most of his time with. His father always looked down upon poor and half-blood families, teaching Draco that they were inferior, and his very house agrees. The head of his house, Professor Snape, has a deep loathing for Harry and allows Draco to bully him, Ron and Hermione, often encouraging it.
By book six, Draco has been recruited into the family business and becomes an official Death Eater. Voldemort, said to be the most powerful dark wizard of all time, chooses him for the task of killing Dumbledore, the most powerful good wizard of all time, and ensures he knows that should he fail the task, both he and his family will be killed. Despite this threat, Draco chooses not to become a murderer, defying Voldemort - and how many people do we know who defied Voldemortâs orders and lived to tell the tale?
In Deathly Hallows, when the trio is caught by snatchers, Draco refuses to identify Harry to Bellatrix and the other Death Eaters at Malfoy Manor, despite him being with Ron and Hermione, and still resembling himself under the stinging jinx. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he prevents Crabbe from killing Harry by lying and saying Voldemort wants him alive - perhaps knowing that Harrys survival is the only way to finally beat Voldemort. In the final fight, Draco leaves Voldemort and the Death Eaterâs side, instead choosing to leave with his family. In a scene that was cut from the movie, I believe he in fact runs forward to help Harry.
For someone to be raised for 17 years under views of racism and supremacy, to then disregard all ego and potentially fatal consequences by defying the most dangerous dark lord and attempt to help those he had forced to be âagainstâ his whole life - expressing care for people who had humiliated him on many occasions - thatâs pretty damn brave and impressive to me.
Much like Regulus Black, he broke free of the views he was raised under, went against his family and risked his life to fight for what was right. Draco Malfoy is an incredibly well-written character whose loyalties change for the better and motivations are always clear. He just wants to be accepted, by his father, by Snape and by Voldemort, but eventually becomes confident and compassionate enough to break free and fight for justice instead.
He was never a villain, just a scared boy who was never allowed to show fear or weakness.
