First selfie

“The first selfie was taken by Robert Cornelius (USA) in October 1839, using a daguerreotype technique – an early photographic process employing an iodine-sensitized silvered plate and mercury vapour. Cornelius was required to sit for between three and 15 minutes to allow the necessary exposure time.”

The solid anatomy vies with increasingly abstracted space, painterly flourishes, and the models’ own intense presence. Rebecca Whelan was both a student and a favorite subject for Anshutz, who painted her at least five times, in a variety of attitudes. Here, she contemplates a tanagra figurine, the Attic Greek clay statuettes that were in demand in Europe and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The woman at leisure is a common theme in late-19th-century and early-20th-century American painting. They reflect the contemporary definition of a woman’s proper sphere: the realm of leisure, beauty, and the aesthetic, harmonious domestic environment. Here, Anschutz depicts a young woman in period dress intently reading a book.
