Great Wooden Boats: RED EPIC from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
2013 Regrade using FilmComvert. 10% off with code bloom or just click here! gopb.co/filmconvert
Whilst on holiday near the Great Lakes in June I was able to borrow Eric Kessler's RED Epic for a few days. I messed around with the slow motion 300 FPS first thing but I really wanted to shoot a little piece with it so we found the Great Lakes Boat Building Company online. Phoned them up and asked if we could spend two hours with them making a little film...Mike, the owner said of course!

GH4 Tests: The Duck Whisperer @ 96fps from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
A little bit of filming down by Richmond riverside as I happened to pop into the shops and the job of the GH4 is the size so it goes in my man bag easily WITH a second lens. A true go anywhere 4K camera/ still camera.
You can read more about this and everything else I know/ think about Pansonic's GH4 on my review page here: gopb.co/ gh4
The full video review won't be ready until early/ mid June, but there is loads and loads of info on the blog post.
I shot this piece mostly at 96fps in full HD mode with about 3 shots in 4K mode. You can tell them I am sure! There are some images issues at high speed so deep depth of field shots are not recommended!

The Wood Carver: A Sony FS5 mini documentary from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.
It has been too long since I posted one of my mini documentaries. The last one was all the way back in April. That is why it is great to be able to share one more before the year ends.
This mini documentary was part of a commission from Sony to promote their new camera, the PXW-FS5. They wanted me to make a film using their camera that would highlight many of it's features. The content of the film, this mini documentary was what I decided to make as I really wanted to tell a story rather than just shoot some pretty pictures as it would be far more engaging.
The first part of this video is a little intro about me and the camera. The interesting part is the mini documentary that starts a third of the way through featuring artist Nick Johnson. Although there are some lovely pics in the intro plus some good BTS of the actual shoot (tthanks to Julian Wakefield of Teraton who shot that, he used the Sony FS7 and A7R II)
Please read my blog post all about this for info on the concept, my pre-production, the shoot including my approach to the interview, the lighting, lenses, audio and high frame rate filming. There is also info there about the grading and why I have raised the black levels in much of my recent work.
All shot in 4K other than the super slow motion and MOVI shots. All explained in the blog post.
There is something about this mini doco and Nick that really resonates with me. So much of what he said connected with me. I will hopefully one day do a longer cut without the restrictions I had to stick to.

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? - A Documentary by Jr.canest from Jr.canest on Vimeo.
jrcanest.com/WHATSTHEPROBLEM/
“WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?” It’s a short documentary by Jr.canest (me), it was my final project for Vancouver Film School, I decided to explore a whole new area that I always wanted to explore; Documentaries. So after working a lot in front of the computer creating mostly motion graphics I thought it was a great opportunity to explore this area of film-making.
I’ve been always interested in people’s different opinions and point of views, especially what we as human beings think about our little world and what better question than ask people what they think the problem in the world is and not just that but also, if they gave me an answer, ask them if they have a solution for that problem or if they have been doing something about it and that is what this documentary is about. The objective was to show people’s different point of views and put the question out there to people think about and maybe start doing something.
During the process I learned a lot, I used my friend’s camera, the audio was not good but I had to work with it, I interviewed more than 50 people around Vancouver (and surroundings in BC, Canada) and Seattle, WA (USA), some people refused to speak in front of the camera but they talked to me anyways… I was surprised that almost every single one of the people that I approached had something to say about the subject, another interesting fact is that our point of view of the problem in the world is (in most cases) defined by our environment, the people around us, our social status, etc… is this the way it should be? Or maybe that is another problem, we don’t think outside our reflective and selfish bubble.
The project was finished on November 09.
Thanks for all the people that helped for the project and especially all those were in front of the camera and they were willing to be part of the project.
