Building a low cost greenhouse structure for a client’s food garden. The food garden was always the pet project I was most excited about, and the green house was a highlight of that. The last time I built one of there was on the US, where everything was available. Who would have guessed that there were no carriage bolts, or bell ended PVC in liberia. Or that the PVC pipes were not standard lengths. I wanted it to be 100% locally sourced, so there were some challenges, and we will make some design improvements for next time but overall, it worked, even passing the test of that freak storm Friday night. The cover is temporary. We got on the local market. I suspect it won’t last for more than six months but for $30 you can replace it easily. In this case, the client plans to replace it with something imported and very fancy with a 5 year guarantee. (at Marshall, Liberia)
Pleased as punch, or maybe #palmwine. Cecelia drying #vetiver roots. We thought we'd tinker with them a bit. Not sure what we'll do with them quite yet. Maybe some #Natural #farming #inputs, #OHN or #FPJ. Or maybe some #essentialoil. #CGNF #KNF #LNF #Liberia @bokashibill (at Harrisburg, Montserrado, Liberia)

#Vetiver at attention, waiting to be deployed in the protection of #Liberia's #electricity#. #Sediment from #rain #water #runoff fill the reservoir taking up space that was intended for water. This reduces the capacity of the reservoir and the amount of electricity it can produce. Vetiver is going in here to trap that sediment, keeping it from flowing in the reservoir. #hep (at Mount Coffee Hydropower Project)

It's starting to get REAL! Spent the second half of today with Ross starting the annuals to be planted in about three weeks! Not going to list them all, but know that all your faves are there! Including 4 tomato varieties, and 6 lettuces. That's actual lettuces, we won't even mention the baby brassicas.

Arugula Kale Mizuna Ruby red lettuce Minetto lettuce Basil PepperMint Oregano Cilantro Parsley Spring Kale Tatsoi Peas Green beans Michihilli(Chinese cabbage) Rosemary Spearmint & more
Arugula, Kale, Mizuna and Red Mustard! Karnue's first promising harvest. Nice work, Sir! Only the second try too. I'm hoping to get lots of this stuff out of him. I hope I can keep the promise I made to him in return for this!
From Liberian smallholder farms to Paris markets
Karnue Kalawolo, a Liberian small scale farmer from Nimba County, farms on 2.4 acres in Fendell, Louisiana, Montserrado County in Liberia.
Karnue currently grows lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeño peppers and fresh herbs for Grain Coast Farms.
Last month, Grain Coast signed a contract with a French supermarket chain to produce fresh vegetables, including okra, peppers and eggplant, for their stores in Paris. We plan to fulfill this order using Karnue's produce and 15 other farmers like him in the Montserrado, Margibi, Bomi and Bassa counties.
We just kicked off an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to help raise some of start-up capital for the project so that we can provide Karnue with all the equipment and supplies he needs to produce quality vegetables consistently for high income markets, and keep on doing it for years to come.
Visit our Indiegogo page to find out more about the project and what you can do to help.
