Reading Manacled for the first time:
Reading the flashbacks:
Going back to read the ‘present’ and realizing (and admiring) how everything is super intricate and connected:
Realizing how many details you overlooked the first time around:
Going a bit crazy rereading everything trying to find meaning even in the smallest of things because @senlinyuwrites is a genius and you can never be sure
Illustrations for Manacled by @senlinyuwrites (Part 2)
Part 1
The newspapers around the world featured a picture of Ginevra Weasley emerging from the rubble of a castle, her face filthy and streaked with blood. The brutal scar on her face was the first thing the photo clearly made out. She tossed her head back, her expression a mixture of exhaustion and cold triumph as she stepped into view, dragging Voldemort’s corpse behind her. Manacled, chapter 76 · 8/?
rereading manacled by @senlinyuwrites... felt so many emotions again
@jjsnrk animated this!!! they are moving *cries*

draco malfoy's harness (healer hermione x auror draco)
i just wanted to draw draco with a harness but i also wanted to make the harness useful. i think draco as a wizard who combines potions and hexes to duel really suits him :)
I had an AMA today over on the HPFC Discord Server. Mostly questions about Manacled but also a few discussions of others fics if anyone is interested in reading a transcript.
Manacled author AMA event!
Hi! I absolutely loved Manacled and it is by far the best fanfic I have read in a long time. Recently though I saw a tik tok made by a creator who claimed that Manacled romanticized r@pe and shouldn’t be praised. I have been feeling very conflicted about this lately and am not sure how to feel. What are your thoughts about how the fandom romanticizes your story? Did you ever intend for Manacled to come off this way?
If it’s the Tiktok I saw, the creator only read six chapters of Manacled and then was reacting to the trigger warnings on the fic. If anyone who has read the entire story wants to bring examples of where they believe I’ve romanticized rape, I am more than happy to have a conversation about that with them.
But I’m not going to spend my limited free time endeavoring to change the minds of people who themselves admit to either having skim-read or only partially-read Manacled, and then proceeded to go to a public platform and make sweeping judgements about me and my intentions as an author, and why they think people have read and enjoyed the story.
Personally I have never regarded Manacled as a romance. It is romantic in certain gothic romance regards, but in my opinion, fundamentally, Manacled is a dystopian horror story and a tragedy, insofar as literary categorization goes. Admittedly the characters don’t die, but the structure of the story is not actually very romance shaped. Tragedy and romance have many similarities, but the form of their climax is distinct, which is part of why many people are dissatisfied with the epilogues, because they don’t do the things that readers expect to feel at the conclusion of an epic romance. They’re not supposed to, because it wasn’t.
Horror and romance are also closely related, they have many of the same beats, but they’re inversions of each other. One of my favourite tumblr posts puts it thusly:
something about horror as a genre is very inherently similar to romance, but it’s differently romantic. it’s like if romance could be compared to a rabbit, then horror is a hare. a hare is the same shape-ish as a rabbit, but it’s different; it’s upturned and eerie and comes at you from a sideways angle.
i think this connection between the two genres is the presence of love. love as a concept. romance is the genre that beautifies love, and horror is the genre that explores love in ways that aren’t beautiful. horror is the monstrosity of love gone sour, or the absence of love, or the emotions that the intensity of love and pain birth. slasher horror is monstrous obsession, while existential horror always has a narrative that makes you rethink what love means, what being human means. just like romance.
That’s very much the way I see Manacled. It was intended as the Black Mirror version of JKR’s power of love premise in the HP series. The question I wanted to ask in writing it was what kind of love is truly enough to win a war? Manacled is the horror version of Harry Potter, where love is monstrosity.
Much as I occasionally wish it, I cannot police interpretation. I don’t create characters as moral endorsements, and I expect that anyone old enough to read a M rated story to have the critical reasoning to understand that.
Did they ever waltz together again (your Hermione and Draco from ‘Manacled’)? Maybe for sentimental reasons... I really hope so... 🖤
Yes. I always imagine that they did. Slower waltzing though, the way that newly-weds do when they’re so wrapped up in each other they almost forget they're supposed to be dancing.
Hi!!! I just finished reading Manacled and I’m about to throw myself off a cliff. I seriously can’t believe we get content like this for free, it’s an amazing, amazing, amazing story omg. I threw me off a little that in the epilogue Aurore calls Draco “father” because I always assume that Draco would want his fatherhood and the raising of his children to be the furthest thing from the relationship he had with his father. Like I believe he would literally try to do everything his dad didn’t do and not do the stuff he did. So because he always called his father “father” and they had such a cold relationship I thought he would want his relationship with Aurore to be different. This is not a complaint at all!!!!!!! I just thought it was interesting and wanted to ask you about it. Again thank you so much for Manacled you are so so talented!!!!!
So, you just accidentally unlocked overanalyisis with Sen. I apologize. Here are many words:
There was actually a reason for that. I agree that Draco wanted to distance himself from being a father like Lucius as much as possible, however, I imagine he grew up in a highly constrictive social circle and didn’t witness many families or parenting that would have been less formal. So I don’t think he would have thought to be called something different.
You’ll noticed that Hermione refers to herself as Mum rather than “mother” but she calls Draco “Father” to Aurore, and in my mind, she did that from the beginning because she had assumed that it would be the name Draco would be expecting/more comfortable with. And so, that’s what Hermione uses, that’s what Draco goes by and that’s what Aurore calls Draco when she’s little.
HOWEVER, you will notice that in the final epilogue Aurore refers to Draco as “Father” during her conversation with Ginny that’s out in public, but in private, when it’s just her and James, she calls Draco “Dad.” In my mind, when she went to school she switched in imitation of her classmates and kind of cautiously tried it out when she saw Draco again, and was like, “Is this ok? This is what my school chums do.” And Draco had a small emotional breakdown on the inside and was like, “of course you can call me dad. That’s fine. I didn’t know you wanted to.”
So, in conversations with professors or when the context was less casual/intimate, she’d switch back to referring to him as father. But when she was actually with Draco, or talking about him with a friend, she’d refer to him as Dad.
He’s dad, but only in private.
Hey there, Sen! I was wondering, what’s the name of the cologne Draco is wearing in your work “Manacled”. I imagine it might be Bvlgari Soir or is it something else? Sorry, if you’ve already answered this in the past. Thank you!
So, this is the cologne that my beta had in mind when we were discussing what Draco should smell like in Manacled. Private Label by Jovoy. https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Jovoy-Paris/Private-Label-13460.html
However, the selection for notes that Hermione noticed were ultimately selected based on their literary function, and Private Label doesn’t actually have cedar or oak moss in it.
So, technically, this cologne is closer since it includes cedar, oak moss, and papyrus. Monsieur by Pierre Guillaume. Funnily enough, according the reviews, it smells a lot like Private Label. https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Pierre-Guillaume-Paris/Monsieur-20633.html
Hello Sen! Hope you are doing well. I just finished re-reading Manacled and I enjoyed it even more than the first time. I wanted to ask you why you decided to make Hermione a virgin, was it to show how she was literally willing to give all of herself to the cause? Or to make it a little more tragic? Sorry if this is an inappropriate question, but all your writing choices seem to have a meaning behind them and I really wanted to know. Thank you for writing and have a great day!
So there were a couple different reasons. For one, her character just felt virginal, not in a innocent, girlish, blushing way, but in respect to sexual experience simply not being something she regarded as important for herself yet.
I considered her as very focused on the war, to the point that she just let everything else fall to the wayside. Hermione’s such an intense individual, whenever she does anything in canon to help Harry or Hagrid or the house-elves, she lets it consume her. There’s a ruthlessness in her choices that enables her to give up even some of the most important things to herself once she’s decided they're worth it. That line she has to Harry about “when I was in, I was in. Maybe you just never realized how far I was willing to go,” really is to me one of the most defining Hermione lines in Manacled. When she’s in, she will go as far as necessary, no matter what the consequences are.
I felt like she was the kind of person who had all these things that she put off for after the war, and that relationships would be one of those things. There also weren’t any characters that I could think of in that canon divergence that I felt like she would have been in a position to cultivate a relationship with. And it also played well with Draco asking in the manor whether or not she was virgin and her not knowing, but later the reader has further context and realizes that the question was him trying to gauge how comprehensive her memory loss was. And it also made the scene when they did have sex for the first time sadder, because it highlighted the level of her desperation, she was plumbing the very depths of what she had left of herself in order to save him. It wasn’t something she particularly valued or that was valuable, but it was one of the only things she still had, and she gave it to the war, for Draco, the same way she did everything else.
what do Hermione and Draco do together when Aurore away at Hogwarts. Do they have their own ball
Mmmm. They work together. Travel in disguise, visit symposiums dedicated to subjects Hermione is interested in. Draco is, in my mind, kind of your stereotypical WWII vet, he kind of just shuts down about his entire past once he’s freed of the war. He’s so fucking tired. So, revenge, which he dabbles in, and finding ways to make Hermione happy is basically he full-time job for the rest of his life.
What did Draco do of Hermione's "I love you" note in Manacled? I like to think he kept it somewhere and sometimes even read it again when he had an emotional breakdown or got drunk. But I also feel like he was too paranoid to keep it and probably burned it just in case someone found it
I was always torn between those two options too. I tended to imagine that he carried it briefly and then placed it somewhere safe like a vault. I don’t think he would have been able to destroy it.
I mentioned in my last ask that I'm rereading manacled again and I just reached the last chapters because I'm taking my time and cant stop wondering why draco refers to Ginny by her first name while he keeps calling Hermione "Granger" most of the time, even though he somehow manages to make her surname sound more intimate💕💕
Too many Weasleys. And Weaslette seemed too juvenile for a war fic with the tone that Manacled had. So she was Ginny. Also. It probably annoyed Ginny to have Draco calling her by her first name.
With Hermione on the other hand, I tend to think that falling for Hermione was something that Draco fought against so intensely that even the familiarity of using her first name terrified him. So even after they were together, calling her Hermione was always something incredibly intimate and emotionally raw for him.
