Brooch, âKul Obaâ, Fortunato Pio Castellani & Sons (ca. 1875)
Large gold pendant brooch with circular top, arched section below from which hang 11 vase-shaped pendants. Fine gold granulation work throughout. The design of this brooch, like some other pieces made by the Castellanis, is based closely on jewelry unearthed at an important archeological site at Kol Oba in Southern Russia, discovered in 1830. Drawings of the jewels, which date from the 4th century BCE, were published after their transferral to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

Erik Kollin, Finnish workmaster for FabergĂ© (RU), First Imperial Easter Egg, known as âHen Eggâ, it was made and delivered to Tsar Alexander III of Russia, in 1885. Crafted from gold, and an opaque white enamelled âshellâ opening to reveal its first surprise, a matt yellow gold yolk. A thin band of gold where the two halves of the shell are joined is visible around the middle of the egg. The two halves open to reveal a gold yolk with a matte finish, containing a varicolored gold hen with ruby eyes. | ©Photo: FabergĂ©
