Send a tip on places to stay near railway stations in Europe for the chance to win a £200 hotel voucher
A friendly welcome after a long journey, comfy room, excellent breakfast … tell us about a place to stay that’s handy for a station in a European city
Whether you’ve discovered a brilliant B&B in a village or small town on the continent you reached by train, a boutique gem, or a hostel near a city terminus, we’d love to hear your experiences of places to stay in Europe by railway stations (not the UK this time).
Please supply website and price details as well as particularly memorable aspects of your stay there.

Alternative city breaks: Malmö - restaurants, nightlife and arts venues
Cycle-friendly with affordable food and free cultural events, the underrated Swedish city is a great alternative to traditional Scandinavian escapes
‘Who comes to Malmö on holiday instead of Copenhagen? Nobody, ever.” Niklas Navijik, of the Astrum electronic music collective, is marvelling at how well his home town fits my plan to explore “underrated” cites. “Malmö is the most overlooked city there is,” he says, while the rest of his collective nod in agreement.
Malmö, at the southern tip of Sweden, is just a 30-minute train ride across the Øresund Bridge (yes, the bridge from TV series The Bridge) from Copenhagen airport (Denmark) and, as a regular visitor to Copenhagen, I have been as guilty of overlooking it as anyone. But, having got to know the city over a few spring days, I won’t be making that mistake again.

Leave the car at home: see the UK coast without driving
In the first of her monthly car-free coast series, our writer takes the train to the Vale of Glamorgan, to explore its beaches and clifftops by bus and on foot
Clifftop bluebells frame the view. Below us is the beach we’ve just crossed, balancing on barnacle-crusted rocks and jumping over rain-boosted streams. As the falcon flies, we’re less than 20 miles from Cardiff, but there is a wild remoteness here in the cascading valleys, pungent with wild garlic, and shining sand that mirrors a cloudy sky.
I’ve joined the Vale of Glamorgan branch of the Ramblers for a walk along the crumbling shore, after first filling up on gourmet fish and chips in Monknash. Cliffs rise like shale-and-limestone layer cake over curving waves of rock, and a huge fossilised ammonite clings to one stony ledge.

Travel insurance ‘will not cover’ cancelled Sri Lanka holidays
Policies would pay out only if Foreign Office warned against travel, though airlines and tour operators ‘will consider’ requests to postpone • Sri Lanka bombings: latest updates
Holidaymakers who want to postpone travel to Sri Lanka in the wake of the bomb attacks that killed 290 people will not be covered by their travel insurance. The UK Foreign Office (FCO) updated its travel advice for Sri Lanka on Monday to include details of the nationwide curfew and pending state of emergency. However, the Guardian understands it is unlikely the FCO would issue a warning advising against all travel to Sri Lanka: such warnings area rare and usually region-specific.
Reflecting the increased threat, the FCO’s current advice states: “Security has been stepped up across the island and there are ongoing security operations. These may continue for a number of days and the situation remains dynamic. Please follow the advice of local security authorities, hotel security staff and your tour company. The airport is operating, but with increased security checks and long queues for taxi pick-ups.”

Wild weekend: Kayaking around Estonia’s Pakri islands
These almost uninhabited islands near Tallinn are full of wildlife – and also plenty of reminders of Estonia’s cold war history
It’s well past midnight on the tiny Estonian island of Suur-Pakri and the sun is just setting, casting a pink hue over the sea. We’re camping close to the water’s edge – and nipping between the intense heat of our improvised sauna and the freezing waters of the Baltic. Kessu, our guide, has rigged up a heavy-duty tent with a hole for a chimney and we’ve collected firewood. With just the stars and six other travellers for company, it’s the perfect end to an energetic day’s sea-kayaking.

10 great conservation-led places to stay around the UK
To celebrate Earth Day, here’s our pick of eco-hotels, campsites and cottages that use tourism to fund conservation, promote biodiversity and protect endangered species
Conservation comes first at the UK’s only family-owned and -managed national nature reserve. Elmley’s 1,335 hectares (3,300 acres) of freshwater grazing marsh, salt marsh, hay meadows and newly planted woodland on the Isle of Sheppey allow birdlife to thrive. Sightings of marsh harriers, short-eared owls and merlins are commonplace, but the success story is ground-nesting birds: 463 lapwings fledged at Elmley last year, which is 400 more than the next most successful reserve. Elmley’s owners are also on a mission to make wildlife open to all. Visitors can stay at one of six comfortable huts with mesmerising wetland views. Most guests are won over when they spot hares, butterflies and dragonflies on the two-mile drive from the nearest public road. • Huts for two from £105 a night, lower rates for longer stays, elmleynaturereserve.co.uk

Pastures new: a family farmstay in Austrian Tirol
Our writer thinks her family are not really ‘animal people’ but a stay on an organic farm, with rabbits, ponies, llamas and hens, could just change her mind
Hay fever. Animal allergies. Arachnophobia. Sensitive skin. I should have paid more attention to my personal hindrances before saying that I liked the sound of sleeping in the hay barn at Wolfseggstall, a small organic farm in Austria’s eastern Tirol. It looked so winsomely appealing on the tourist board website, with images of cherub-cheeked poppets in toddler-size lederhosen beaming from neat piles of golden hay. What great fun for all the family! What an antithesis to modern life!

Garden getaways
These splendid hotels and cottages sit in some of the country’s finest gardens ands estates, offering relaxation and a riot of colour
Bucolic bliss awaits at Barnsley House hotel in Cirencester. Redesigned by Rosemary Verey in the 1950s, its 11 acres combine formal gardens, clipped yews, rock roses and mixed borders with an ornamental fruit and vegetable garden that gives on to wild meadows. The laburnum walk is Barnsley’s showstopper, but look out, too, for the frog fountain and, at the other end of the long vista, the whimsical, classical Temple reflected in an octagonal pool. A fabulous spa is hidden in one corner of the garden and the grade II-listed 17th-century manor house has the lauded Potager restaurant and 18 chic bedrooms. Think taupe, splashes of colour and rub-a-dub-dub freestanding bathtubs. • Doubles from £224 room-only, barnsleyhouse.com. The garden is open year round to guests. Non-guests £15 entry, including tea and biscuits

‘You won’t find this on Capri’: Italy’s Tremiti Islands
This tiny archipelago off Puglia was once a penal colony, but today its clear waters, coves and quiet lanes offer a blissful escape
The ferry from Termoli noses its way towards two petite islands, slipping into a serene Adriatic inlet. To the left, San Domino’s low limestone cliffs rise, crowned by Aleppo pines. To the right, the Abbazia di Santa Maria a Mare, an 11th-century abbey built by Benedictine monks, dominates the skyline of San Nicola. Fishing boats crowd the waters between.

Boutique beat: 20 of the best UK music festivals for 2019
Our pick of this summer’s smaller festivals features cool sites in the countryside, as well as art, crafts, yoga – and great sounds
Returning to Gilcombe Farm (a couple of miles from Bruton village’s train station), for a fifth year, Shindig still aspires to be a party with friends rather than a full-scale festival. There’s an onsite pub, local stalls and several smaller performance areas rather than one main stage. The lineup so far includes Estelle, Huey Morgan, Benjamin Zephaniah, DJs Kenny Dope, Nu-Mark and Audio Bullys, plus circus, comedy, wellbeing activities and workshops for children and teens including breakdancing and djing. Festivalgoers are also encouraged to Get Fruity, the theme for this year’s fancy dress. • 23-26 May, adult £154.45, teen (13-17) £79.90, under-12s free, shindigfestival.co.uk
