I enjoy a fantasy where by day Arthur and Lola are mild-mannered high school/college science teachers living in a completely ordinary mid-to-high-income suburban-rural home, and probably have MENSA-candidate ginger children and multiple dogs

Arthur arched his back and grinned, reaching up to twine coppery curls around his fingers and tug them into Lolaās eyes, his other hand settling her firmly by the hip into his lap. āNow, Iāve always been a model roommate. If Iād known about this naughty streak of yoursā¦.ā Ā He tugged at a fistful of her shirt, sliding his fingers against the bare skin of her back. Ā
"Gosh, now Iām not so sure if itās safe for us to be unchaperoned." Arthur pulled Lola down for a proper kiss, breathing in the scent of her hair, her skin. "At this rate, you just might have your way with meā¦" He pressed a kiss to her neck, trailing down to her collarbone with a smile as he lifted his knees, propping his feet up on the table edge to rock her into his chest.Ā "Beautiful girlā¦I donāt even stand a chance."
"You ol' charmer..." Pressed completely up against Arthur now, Lola allowed her eyes to fall shut, drowning slowly in the heat of his lips on her skin. Her arms slipped around his shoulders, and one hand threaded through the short hairs at the nape of his neck, cradling his head to her bosom. "Darlin', you're goin' t' make this th' best New Year's I've ever had. There isn't anybody out there as lucky as me..."
She pulled back then, a coy smile on her lips matching the look in her eyes. Reaching for the hemline of her shirt, the Engineer pulled the white waffle-knit henley slowly over her head and tossed it to one side on the couch, leaving her only in a pale, lacy bra. The slight chill of the room raised the tiniest goosebumps on her, and she pressed herself forward against the Pyro once again. "...Except maybe you. Now, come warm me up, Arthur, sugar..."

"This coffee table sounds good right about nowā¦" Arthur lifted a suggestive eyebrow, reaching for her wrist and pressing a kiss to the inside of her arm as the amber liquid tilted in her glass. "Probably too cold for the workshopā¦we havenāt tried that yetā¦"
A final few stragglers passed by, donning jackets and hats and carrying various accoutrements of celebration, and Arthur trailed off to follow them with a chilly stare. āMove alongā¦no turning back. You arenāt allowed in again for the next thrrrā¦four ā fourĀ hours.ā He glanced at Lola. āThatās enough time, right?ā
"At th' very least..." Straightening up, Lola twirled out of Arthur's grasp and padded around the end of the couch to set her drink down on the coffee table. He'd turned around to watch her, re-seating himself on the couch, and she intended to use that to her advantage. With a dirty grin, she straddled his lap facing him and made herself very comfortable there, wriggling into place.
The door shut behind their last teammates, and the whole of the common area was quiet, save for the crackling and popping of the wood in the fireplace. Lola lay her hands on Arthur's chest and firmly slid them up to his shoulders, kneading the thick muscles on either side of his neck. "Why use th' coffee table when we've got this comfy ol' couch right here? Besides... Won't it be amusin' seein' everybody sit here an' not knowin' what we did?"

Standing between the Pyro and the kitchen, Lola bent down with a devious little smile on her lips, pitching her voice down to something only he could hear. āHavinā said that, I think we should let them go. All of them. We could have thā place to ourselvesā¦ Anā you know what they say about midnight, donāt you, darlinā? Whatever youāre doinā then, youāll be doinā thā whole yearā¦ā
Arthur sat up a little straighter. āWell, if you mean practicing good dental hygiene and fire safety, then I think thatās a givenā¦ā He narrowed his eyes, deciding that the drink in the Engineerās hand would probably make pulling her over the back of the couch a little too messy this early in the evening. Instead, he snaked an arm around her waist.
"Okay ā alright, change of plans, you all need to go. Go soon, go quickly, go now. Immediately.ā
Lola took a sip of her bourbon then dropped her head down to lightly catch Arthur's lips with a smile, the taste of his drink mingling pleasantly with that of her own. "We should make plans, like... Where we want to start. Locker room... Showers... Bathtub... Laundry room... Kitchen... Right here on th' floor in front of th' fireplace..."

"I just donāt understand the appealā¦" Arthur dropped his feet on the common room coffee table. The television was locked onto a grainy feed of Guy Lombardo, the volume blessedly muted. "Out fraternizing with the competition while you could be here, watchingā¦thisā¦ā He grimaced, gesturing to the TV. āWho even turned this thing onā¦ā
Rolling over, Arthur crossed his arms over the back of the couch, leaning his chin on them and glaring at the kitchen. āCooking for RED. Awfulā¦ā he droned, fully aware nobody was listening. āAnyone with any sense is more than welcome to stay here and sit quietly all night.ā
"I don't exactly approve of it either, Arthur, sugar..." Lola moved over to the back of the couch from the BLU liquor cabinet, drink in hand. When she'd heard about the invitation from RED, she'd balked immediately. Socializing with the enemy? Out of the question. But of course Philippe felt it would be a show of good faith to attend in light of recent events, and while she couldn't argue with that aside from the fact that they shouldn't be collaborating with RED in the first place, it didn't mean she had to spend a holiday with those trigger-happy yahoos.
However, seeing how many of the rest of the team seemed to be interested in attending, it gave her ideas. Ideas she hoped Arthur would support.

Whatever you're doin' then, you'll be doin' th' whole year..."
The hand at Lolaās waist slipped around to hold her more firmly, and on the edge of her final words Arthur caught her lips with his, soft and insistent. Ā Her kiss was every bit as sweet as heād imagined. Ā
"Yesā¦I think we could do that. Right now." His own voice sounded a little breathless, and he smiled despite himself, forehead lightly brushing hers as he let himself drift a moment in the Engineerās warm, dark eyes. "Your room or mineā¦you lead."
"Mmm, can't help but appreciate a gentleman who trusts his lady enough t' let her take th' lead..." Completely forgetting their drinks on the kitchen counter, Lola caught Arthur's lips once more, just as firm and slow as her hand on his neck had been.
Once the kiss broke, she slid her hand from his neck and down his chest to his waist, fingers catching in the waistband of his pants to tug him forward while her other hand more tightly clasped his. Lola winked at him again as she turned and led him out of the kitchen and down the hall to his room. "C'mon. Let's go get warmer, darlin'..."
"Oh, I can." Arthur nodded once. "Iām sure I can."
He reached out for Lolaās hand, gently coaxing the mug from it and setting it next to his glass on the counter, her fingers still caught loosely in his.Ā His other hand found her waist, resting lightly there.Ā Arthur tilted his head, hazel eyes narrowing a little as they followed the heart-shaped line of Lolaās cheek.
"You know, though, Ms. Chaseā¦" He leaned in a little, voice dropping to a murmur. Ā "You donātā¦seem all that coldā¦"Ā
"Well, I certainly am feelin' warmer already." Lola pressed in closer, their bodies not quite touching, her head dropping back to gaze up coquettishly at Arthur. One mug-warmed hand reached up to cup the back of his neck, squeezing and massaging it firmly, slowly.
"S' tell me somethin' now..." Her voice dropped to match his, smooth as silk, and she closed the distance between them, her lips ghost ghosting over his with heated breaths. "Don't you think we could get...even warmer someplace a li'l more...private and comfortable, sir?"

She waved a hand through the air before rejoining it to the cup in her hands, warmth seeping through pleasantly. āIt doesnāt really matter, I guess. If he doesnāt come in soon, Iām sure our Spyāll make him come inside tā warm up. Itās even chilly in here, though. Anā my room. Thatās why I made me some tea, tā warm up.ā Her smile widened, and she winked at Arthur. āOf course if Iād known you were still awake, Iādāve asked you tā come warm me up in my bed instead.ā
Arthur choked faintly, glanced back over his shoulder, then put his glass down with a faint chuckle. āIs that what itās come to? Teamwork to outsmart our failing utilities?āĀ He cleared his throat, then shook his head with a smile. āAre you sure you donāt want Dellās space heater instead? Itās probably a lot warmerā¦doesnāt kick, either.ā
"While that may be true, no space heater's good for keepin' in a lady's bed. Besides I don't mind a li'l kickin'. A li'l snugglin' wouldn't be so bad, though, would it?" Lola moves back into the kitchen proper until she's just inside the Pyro's personal space. The coy little smile on her face doesn't falter in the slightest.
"What's th' matter, sugar? Afraid you can't do as good a job keepin' me warm? I bet you could do better..."
Arthur looked up with a wry smile, bottle already in one hand, highball between two fingers. āItās all going the same place. This just gets it done faster.ā Ā But he straightened up, moving back toward Lola and the kitchen proper before leaning one hip against the counter and making a shallow pour. Ā āHereās to avoiding exploding pipes. And frostbite.ā
He swallowed quickly, then grimaced, and started another. āYouāre out here by yourselfā¦everybody else turn in already?ā Of course, the heating registers were far more effective in the dormitory wing of the base, which provided ample encouragement for an early bedtime.
"Mm-hmm..." The Engineer nodded and took a small sip from her mug, letting the liquid hit her lips first to test the temperature. It would never do to go to bed with a burnt tongue. "As far as I know, everybody else is in their rooms, although Dell might still be out in his workshop. He must have a space heater out there 'cause I don't know how he could stay out there s' long otherwise. I don't suppose you saw his light on still, did you?"

The grim oracle of the radio had predicted a hard freeze before dawn, a dry cold front pushing the rain away for another few days more. What this meant to most of the team was simply further reason to sleep in ā no battle tomorrow, no work.Ā
What it meant to the more pragmatic types was that there were greenhouse water pipes in peril of bursting. Arthur was simply thankful that the thought of danger had occurred to himĀ before going to bed, rather than having to sit up in the middle of the night and weigh the pros and cons of venturing into 20-degree nighttime in his bathrobe to set buckets under the drip valves.Ā
Of course, it was already down to 25 at 11:30pm, so the differences were really mostly philosophical.
Arthur shut the door behind him, leaning against the frame for a moment and waiting for sensation to creep back into his blue fingertips. Ā Then, with a long shudder, he began to peel off his layers as he trudged to the liquor cabinet.
Lola glanced over at the dining room entrance when it opened and closed quickly, her hands clutched around the steaming mug in her hands as the tea steeped in it. Her eyes followed Arthur as he headed around the corner, the wall obstructing her view once he'd passed it, so she moved into the kitchen doorway to watch him go through the liquor cabinet. The way his fingers touched the bottles told her he must not have a lot of feeling in them. Which made sense since it was colder than a witch's tit out there.
A warm smile spread across her face as she leaned against the door jamb. "Care t' make that a hot toddy, Arthur, sugar? You look like you could use one..."

"Me? Whā¦well. I guess I donāt really know." Arthur paused to think. "I mean, Iāve always been that chump the wiseguys love to hassle, because I laugh along with them. Of course, once they lose interest, then I turn invisible. I guess all in all Iām just somewhat useful, but ultimately forgettable."
He chuckled faintly, then was quiet for a moment. āYou get used to that, and you start kind of forgetting how to really be friends with folks. Just get up in the morning, get to work, do your best, be nice to people, then go home and do it again the next day.ā He snorted, then, his voice picking up a little more jovial volume. āAnd thatās my pathetic sad-sack impression. What did you think?ā
"I think...it sounds like you needed a real change of pace, sugar. Some adventure in your life. A lot of m' time after college has been like...one adventure after th' other. It's awful tough tryin' t' get any respect as a woman in scientific fields. Hell, strings had t' be pulled just to get me that geologist job on th' oil rig. The gentleman who interviewed me didn't want t' hire me because I was a woman. Not because he feared for m' safety or anything, bein' th' only woman on th' entire rig, but because what does a woman know? Surely, a woman can't know as much as a man, he said. But m' daddy knew th' owner of th' company, an' they hired me anyway. I had t' be a real witch just t' get that far, even without m' daddy's help. I'm glad I've been able t' let some of that go enough to make friends with all of y'all."
Lola hugged Arthur's arm to her and leaned her head on his shoulder again. "Now, I know you used to be a teacher, but you never said how you ended up here. Are you feelin' like sharin' that with me today? If not, I'm gonna start pumpin' you for gossip t' share with Bug later."

The Engineer almost laughed trying to imagine herself in one of Shannonās tiny little minidresses, itād be more like a sausage shirt on her. āYou know, I have tā admit Iāve never enjoyed beinā part of a team as much as this one. We may not win all thā time, but there are never any hard feelinās or anyone yellinā that weāre not doinā our jobs. Everyone takes care of everyone else. Everyone cares, period, even when weāre new tā thā team. I shouldāve done this earlier, butā¦ Thank you. For makinā me feel like Iām a part of thā team. I appreciate it.ā
"What? Ohā¦heyā" The thought of minidresses had been briefly distracting, and Arthur shook his head quickly. Ā "Donāt thank me. God knows Iām probably the worst at deliberate socializing." He shrugged a little. "I just canāt really believe anyone wouldnāt enjoy being around you ā a team with you. I mean, Iām sure everybody on the team agrees."
"Nobody's said anything t' th' contrary yet, so I s'pose I might have t' agree with you." Lola leaned into him again, her hand giving his another quick squeeze. "But I'm not so sure I can agree with you on bein' th' worst at socializin'. You were one of th' first people t' make me feel welcome, even when I expressed my...less than charitable opinions on havin' a Spy for a leader. I thought Dell might shoot me! But you... You've always been nice, Arthur, sugar. Why would you think you're th' worst at socializin'?"

"I donāt think thereās much of it this far north, and even if there was itās probably not safe with so many dogs around in the baseā¦" Then he blinked, and cleared his throat, looking deliberately up into the treetops. "āBut, uhā¦Iām sure we can fake something. for the sake of tradition! You know. Because thatās important."
Arthur cleared his throat. āMy own mother was a Tupperware pioneer. Parties once a month. Gave me a pretty healthy hatred of combing my hair for a decade or so, thereā¦I donāt think Iād have ever put on a tie again if my job hadnāt required it. I havenāt had anyone to impress in a while, though.ā He looked back down at Lola, who was facing the trail again. āIām sure youāre beautiful when you dress up. I meanā¦youāre beautiful in hiking boots or overalls, so. I guess it only makes sense.ā
"You flatter me, sir. Thank you..." Lola's smile broke into a grin, and she bumped the Pyro lightly with her shoulder. "An' I'd love t' dress up for...someone, but I'm afraid I failed t' bring along anything terribly nice. Maybe if I butter up our Spy, he'll make me somethin' like he makes Shannon, though not so short, hopefully. I don't quite have th' legs for those dresses he makes for her like she does."Ā

"Iāve never really been one for partiesā¦I used to sit out the holidays for the most part, or at least drink them blurry." He shook his head. " Last year they mailed us live turkeys we had to butcher all by ourselvesā¦Iām hoping this year I can just shoot one and save them the trouble. Iām not totally sure the companyās birds werenāt mutants of some sort."
Arthur smiled a little to hide the faint crease in his expression, since heād spent the last Thanksgiving in RED base trying to ignore any semblance of festivities.Ā āThe kids like to decorate, if they can. Nikki and Bugās Halloween decorations ought to have given you a preview. And Philippe and Grigori usually cook something obscene and wonderful. Itās pretty nice, all things consideredā¦Homey. Iām actually sort of looking forward to it. Was your family big on the holidays growing up?ā
"Oh, my, yes. My mama is a li'l Suzy Homemaker type of lady. Every holiday was a huge affair. Decorations. Feasts. Parties. An' m' sisters, m' brother, an' I were always dressed up an' made t' act on our best behavior. Th' only one of us who ever got in any trouble for it was me. I hated those silly dresses, an' I'd disappear more often than not durin' parties. Mama hated that. She'd scold me for days afterwards." Snickering softly, Lola squeezed Arthur's hand again, her eyes on the yellow and brown leaves littering the ground along their trail. She didn't speak much to her mother when she'd call home or write to the family. Every conversation was the same. How she was doing. When she was coming home. When she was going to get married and have a family. The rest of her kind knew better than to bother asking that.
Shaking her head, she looked up at Arthur then with a sweet smile. "I'm lookin' forward t' havin' holidays with this team, too. Th' only thing fancy will probably be th' food, although I can't say that I would be opposed t' seein' you all dressed up. I bet you clean up awful nice, Arthur, sugar." She winked teasingly. "Do you s'pose there'll be mistletoe?"
