I took my own advice and used a reference to draw this picture. There are still flaws, but I’m happy with how she turned out. I think I’ll call her Jane. You will continue to improve as long as you keep drawing. Look for the things you did wrong, and figure out how to do it better next time. Every drawing is a learning opportunity. Simplicity; either a positive or a negative trait for a drawing to have. It can be a strength or a weakness. When you don’t draw things exactly as they are, you have to take creative liberties. A mouth might become a single line or two. Eyes can be represented as single dots if so desired. I often don’t use a reference when I draw, and that shows when I draw things out-of-proportion or at the wrong angle. I explore every artist to use references without copying the original artist’s work. For instance, if you like how one artist draws a nose, then look closely at an example of it and draw a few studies of it, then draw it on a face without looking back at the picture. Of course, when you’re learning to draw, it’s best to use real-life examples to understand the structure of the object you’re drawing. That’s all for now. I hope this helps someone!
