white history is ugly. while a large number of people were kept in poverty all over Europe, leaders started to exploit people on other continents. traditions were killed in order to serve some kind of one sided global market, where many cultures and areas were forced to deliver for white Europeans. people working on the fields here had to pray in Latin even though they didn’t understand the language, while the rich were drinking tea and smoking cigars that they had imported. please white folk, realise the weight of this before using another culture’s traditions as a fun thing or a trend, and just generally don’t be an asshole. research your history and family. research if you are part of a minority, and if your hometown’s economy is suffering the effects of a war still. but for the love of all there is, do not treat people’s cultures as fashion or something ‘exotic’, and especially do not attack them for protecting it. WTF. not having access to our roots is not a fucking excuse to deny it from anyone else, or ridicule anyone else. hurt people hurt people. any kind of supremacy, inequality, leads to an incomplete and pained heart. we are lucky to be pondering this while others are literally killed just because the system built on false foundations promotes criminalising people’s existence.

Rape culture is everything that perpetuates the silence around consent in intimacy. It’s not just stupid powerhungry people who loudly claim that this or that person has the right to hurt others with their desires for whatever reason. It’s also every stereotype that makes couples in dying relationships have mindless sex instead of talking about what’s wrong. Every joke that objectifies the bodies of a certain group of people. Every physical fight that turns into inappropriate touch. Rape is the act of sexual assault of any kind, rape culture is every cultural element making it possible.

For fuck’s sake, don’t start with casual intimacy. There are other ways to be vulnerable and have fun. Listen to a stranger’s life story. Help an elderly person with their grocery shopping. Dance with your family if you don’t usually move together, then never talk about it again. Make friends with a sex worker at a bar. Go to a rave stone cold sober. If after all this moving, shame, laughing, and noise making, your body still desires someone’s closeness for less than an hour, then that’s a stronger and more pure desire, not a substitute for other emotions. Go for it or resist it. But until then, don’t even think about it.
