this just occurred to me but i think while shane’s safe space is on ilya’s crotch ilya’s safe space is shane’s chest. for no reason at all. except at tampa the first time he ever cried in front of shane he was safely tucked in shane’s chest. the first time he said i love you he cried and laid on shane’s chest while shane ran his fingers through his hair.

so now when ilya feels clingy or sad or tired he crawls into shane’s chest and nuzzle between his pecs and shane’s hands fly up automatically to scratch his scalp and it’s the safest, warmest place he could ever be

what people don’t understand about how adhd is disabling is that it’s not just getting temporarily distracted from, like, school work or hobbies. it’s getting distracted/being unable to motivate yourself to go to the doctor, eat regularly, do hygiene tasks, etc. it’s not knowing when or how long it will take you to do something, ANYTHING, and in many cases that thing is taking a shower or keeping your house from turning into a biohazard. it’s about being fundamentally incapable of controlling your attention and focus on anything, even and especially things you need to do to survive.

With the rise of hate crimes and riots in Europe, one has to wonder if all those white men online that spew racist abuse at any poc they see with zero repercussions where involved in these crimes, that their hate isn’t just words it’s actions.

Things that have helped my hEDS (& POTS & MCAS):

Joint pain: canes (I love the nova T-cane)

Joint pain: forearm crutches (not smart crutches)(I like millenial in motion forearm crutches)

Joint pain: custom rigid manual wheelchair (had mixed results with an off the shelf "hospital" wheelchair- hurt my shoulders too much to use often)

Joint pain & dislocation prevention: Knee braces with patellar stabilization (if you have kneecap problems make sure you get braces with patellar stabilization)

Joint pain: meloxicam (better for your stomach than OTC NSAIDs)

POTS: propranolol ER (I can't keep up with taking it multiple times a day- if you like propranolol but can't keep up with taking it 3x a day then ask for the extended release)

POTS: fludrocortisone

POTS raynaud's phenomenon: compression gloves & compression socks

POTS: saline infusions (only on them briefly, beware this treatment has risks and you can build a dependency on it quickly)

MCAS: double dose of claritin and zyrtec (approved by my immunologist)

MCAS: cromolyn sodium (gold standard MCAS treatment)

Things that have not helped my hEDS (& POTS & MCAS)

Joint pain: smart crutches

Joint pain: rollator

Joint pain: TENS machine

Joint pain: KT tape

Joint pain & dislocation prevention: Wrap-style wrist braces (rigid wrist braces have helped)

Joint pain: gabapentin

POTS: gatorade (does! not! contain! a significant! amount! of electrolytes!)

POTS: increased hydration (including with liquid IV)(technically does help... but only sometimes)

POTS: CHOP protocol (or any PT for that matter)(with hEDS your dysautonomia is usually not caused by deconditioning)

POTS orthostatic intolerance: compression socks

POTS: diaphragmatic breathing

POTS: fitbit to monitor heart rate (couldn't tie it into treatment enough to be useful)

MCAS: elimination diet (by nature MCAS does not have consistent triggers. you may gain some benefit my sleuthing out your most frequent triggers but you will never catch all of them. for me, my triggers change too much for this to be useful)

MCAS: frequent benadryl use (not ineffective but carries significant risk)

I keep thinking about the TikTok where the person said "people who need wheelchairs don't fantasise about them" and the phrasing makes me feel icky (not for any actually valid reason, I'm just perpetually guilty), but in actual fact, I am always thinking about it. I'm always thinking about how much I would go to art galleries if I could be sat down the whole time.

Walking around art galleries was when I started to notice something was wrong, because we would walk so slowly, and I'd be in so much pain I'd feel like crying, and before learning to spend the next day in bed, I would be in pain for a good three or four days after.

But if I had a wheelchair? I'd be in art galleries for hours I tell you. And I'd be able to carry my bag without it pulling my shoulder out of its socket, and I could have a sketchbook in my lap, and have my hands free when I'm still because I wouldn't be holding my cane.

I dread going to art galleries because it hurts to be there, it hurts to walk slowly and stand still, more than anything. I want to enjoy galleries the way I'm supposed to, as an artist and art student. But it's where everything hurts the most.

And it's not weird to think about wheelchairs or want one as much as I do; because it would make my life better. That's why I'm thinking about it, because I'm thinking about how nice it would be to do things I enjoy without hurting.
