BRIEF: SHAKESPEARE RE:LOADED - TATE MODERN/THE GLOBE
I visited the Tate Modern and The Globe in order to carry out research.
BRIEF: SHAKESPEARE RE:LOADED - BRICK LANE RESEARCH
After creating mind maps to do with contemporary London I decided to look into graffiti. I visited Brick Lane which helped me think creatively and come up with new ideas.
BRIEF: SHAKESPEARE RE:LOADED - THEME MINDMAPS
Above are the images of mind maps I created when thinking of themes regarding Romeo and Juliet/Contemporary London.
BRIEF: HYPE NARRITIVE - EVALUATION
My task was to create a social media campaign based on a persona we created for a friend or family member.
Firstly, I put together a persona for my friend Kirsty. I found that before moving to London, she lived in Nottingham. Although, the most interesting thing I found was the fact that she has a bee tattoo on her wrist. When asking her why she chose to get this tattoo, she told me that she had always been inspired by their strength, motivation and hardworking of bee’s. I found this an opportunity to do research in order to find out more. When exploring the topic of bee’s being hard working, I found that due to physic laws bee’s shouldn't be able to fly as their bodies are too heavy for their wings to fly. They beat their wings up to 200 times per second in order to lift themselves off the ground - this proves the do the impossible. This is what I decided to base my campaign around.
Secondly, I presented my idea to my tutors and peer’s using the 1 image, 1 sentence concept. 1 Sentence - “To inspire disabled people to get involved in sport through the charity Scope, using the inspiration of bee’s motivation to fly and the fact that they prove everyone wrong by doing the impossible”. 1 Image - I chose to use an image created by Dr Propolus to show what art direction I wanted to go towards. This showed the illustrative white drawings that were placed over the top of the a photograph.
Next, I began to create all the aspects for my campaign using photoshop. Once this had been complete I then had to apply my design to social media in order to present for my final presentation.
What went well? I believe that my over all visual ideas were very strong, this was due to the art direction I decided to follow which backed up the message of being strong. I think that by incorporating photography and illustrations together it created a positive style. The style of my work enabled me to create reoccurring visual theme so that the viewer could recognise the campaign. Not only this, but my presentation was easy to understand.
What could be improved? When looking back at my final work, although my visuals and concept was well explained. I think that my ideas lost it’s meaning when it came to applying them to social medias. In future projects I will ensure that I keep the concept strong throughout all of my work and apply more creativity.
BRIEF: HYPE NARRITIVE - FINAL DESIGNS
Above are my final designs. This consists of Instagram, snapchat, Facebook and twitter profiles.
BRIEF: HYPE NARRITIVE - EXPERIMENTS
Above are experiments for my final gif and poster. I decided that most of these didn't fit due to the colour schemes and imagery used. I believe that all of my work should be consistent so that the target market is able to link each of my work together. I will consider these facts when producing for my final designs.
BRIEF: HYPE NARRITIVE - CORPORATE
DEFINE CORPORATE Corporate relates to a large professional group of people or company within the industry. Corporate design is the graphical design of the company. This means the logo, colour scheme, companies name and over all look all have a distinctive design pattern that is easily recognised by the target audience.
When the second world war started practitioners left Germany and plated the “Bauhaus” style in America. This was when the system of corporate business started.
HERBERT MATTER A Swiss-born American photographer and graphic designer known for his commercial art. His word helped shape graphic design in the 20th century.
CHARLES AND RAY EAMES American husband and wife who made historical contributes to the development of modern architecture and furniture through their designs. They worked out how to layer chemicals to bend materials into any shape. This relates back to the importance of researching materials. Their furniture is still considered “modern” today.
PAUL PAND “GOOD DESIGN IS GOOD BUSINESS” Paul rand had a massive impact on the growth of the industry due to moving graphic design away from picture making by giving his work a meaning. Not only this but he created identity systems within a business.
SAUL BASS American graphic designer and academy award-winning film maker who bought the use of motion graphics into the industry.
HELVETICA Helvetica is a widely used sans-serif typeface which was developed by Swiss designer Max Miedinger. The reason it’s so popular is because of the neutral and clean structure as well as being able to take on the character of design. Above you can see two very different posters that use this font. This is the only font to have a film. A few brands that use Helvetica: -The North Face -Staples -Target -Jeep -American Airlines -Mcdonalds -Apple
MASSIMO VIGNELLI Italian designer who specialised in packaging and homeware design who designed the subway system in 1931.
THE NEW ADVERTISING In the 1980′s the new advertising system started. Founded in 1986, Doyle Dane Berback (DDB) is a worldwide advertising company that takes images and it’s message to create an effect that the target audience has to decode. Traditionally, employees work in teams of two (one copywriter, one art director) in order to create adverts. The new advertising relates to thinking differently to appeal to people intelligence and address the issues head on. An example of this is the VW advert.
BRIEF: HYPE NARRTIVIE - SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS
WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN? Brands use social media campaigns in order to reinforce a businesses goal, promote a product/service, build branding awareness and create a sense of community by uniting people surrounding a common interest on one or more social media platform. This allows them to reach a specific target market. Blow are some examples that are backed up by the images above:
#KNOWYOURLEMONS Worldwide breast cancer organisation created a Facebook campaign using a sour subject and turning it into something lighthearted. This was based off of the saying “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. The charity used Facebook to relay critical information about sings for breast cancer while also creating a safe place for survivors to tell their story. In the end, they exceeded their target on Just Giving.
#TIFFANYBLUE The brand Tiffany used Instagram to prove you can position your brand around one singular colour in order to increase brand awareness. They enabled thousands of Instagram users to post any photo that includes their blue colour by using the hashtag.
ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE This challenge, which was created by the ASL Association, is considered one of the most successful social media campaigns as they raised over $155 million dollars for a disease that most people have never heard of. The concept was to publicly challenge friends to participate by taping ice cold water over themselves in order to recreate the feeling of ASL. This campaign was based on Facebook.
#LIVEFORNOW Pepsi created a campaign that was based on Twitter and Youtube. Using their big budget and a popular London bus shelter they created out of the ordinary situations to enable interest and engagement of the target market. People then shared their reactions on Youtube and Twitter. Examples of this is having a bus disappear after going past the bus shelter or having it look like a member of the public has been abducted by a giant octopus.
BRIEF: HYPE NARRITIVE - IDEAS FOOD (SYSTEM)
WHAT IS A SYSTEM? System design is a rigorous way of approaching design by using scales and complexity to work out problems. System design first started just before world war II.
THE BAUHAUS A German school that started in 1900 is known today as the place where design was born. The ting that made them stand out from any other school was the fact that they analysed their projects and materials so they had deeper artistic understanding of what they were working with and how it would be applied to the real world. Another important fact is about the Bauhaus is that they were the first to stop using serifs within typography.
“FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION”
The sassily chair, designed by head of cabinet making at the Bauhaus Marcel Breuer, is a chair that changed the “4 leg” system by using the strong but rigid ,material steel to form 2 strong legs. Today, this chair is still considered as modern.
THE NEW TYPOGRAPHY In the 1920′s the new typography movement pushed the importance of graphics within the avant grade era by rejecting traditional arrangements. The normal use of symmetrical columns and block text was replaced with bold typography, visual contrast using scale and use of white space. The new typography book was released in 1928 by designer Jan Tschichold that contained accessible guidelines. This book is called ‘Die Nelle Typographie’. Another book that related to the new typography movement is called ‘The Crystal Goblet’ by Beatrice Ward. The name of the book symbolises the fact that wine glasses makes wine glisten and appear more beautiful; this shows that by allowing typography to stand out could come at an advantage and make the work more beautiful.
BASEL SCHOOL OF DESIGN A design school based in Switzerland was founded by Swiss typographer and graphic designer Emil Ruder in 1968. Emil Ruder looked at letterforms and the importance of arrangement, colour and typeface. Although, in the world war Emil was arrested for producing non-german typography.
GRID SYSTEMS A structure that gives you a system for a whole design to be consistent and clear is known as a grid system within design. Olt Aicher, a German designer and typographer founded the Ulm School of Design and found clients for his students to collaborate with. He also, designed the campaign for the The Munich Olympics in 1972 by using alternative design methods using pictograms. These have become the blueprints for olympics campaigns. DIETER RAM’S PRINCIPLES FOR DESIGN German industrial designer, now aged 85, came up with 10 important rules for design: -For designs to be innovative -For designs to be honest -For designs to be long-lasting -To have pleasing aesthetics -For the product to be understandable -To be unobstructive -To be useful -To be through even down to the last detail -To be environmentally friendly - Have as little design as possible
However, Jony Ives, the designer of all Apple products uses a specific grid system which has been heavily inspired by Dieter Rams designs (see images above).
PERSONA
BRIEF: HYPE NARRITIVE
A persona can be defined as: “the aspect of someone’s character that is presented to or perceived by others”. To further explain this, a persona is something that explains a persons personality and nature. Our task was to create a persona to find out as much as possible. I chose to begin my research on my friend Kirsty Macadam. I started by interviewing her about family, location, favourite food, music, ambition and an interesting fact. The reason behind doing this was to begin the hunt for my insight. Above shows the top 6 facts I found out that became of interest to me. 1. I found that Kirsty has ginger hair, this could be incorporated into an idea surrounding hair (specifically ginger hair). 2. Next, I found that although Kirsty lives in Greenwich, London she’s originally from Nottingham. I will continue to research into the different cultures and life in Nottingham. 3. Also, she’s lives with her family of 4. Her mother, farther and brother. 4. Not only this, Kirsty is a film student at Ravensbourne University. 5. Kirsty has a bee tattoo on her left wrist. I discovered that she has an interest in bee’s because of how strong and how hard they work. I will continue to research more into how they work together as a team as well as what they symbolise and their importance to the human kind. 6. Finally, I found that her favourite food is waffles. After putting together this persona, I have decided that I will research into bee’s more as I believe this could be my insight to enabled me to create a deep understanding of the importance of this animal.
BRIEF: HYPE NARRATIVE (IDEAS FOOD) PROPAGANDA
FUTURISTS The idea of futurists were born in the first decade of the 20th century as a social movement to emphasise speed, technology, youth and violence. Marinetti was an Italian poet, editor, art theorist and founder of the futurist movement and crested a manifesto.
Although, in 1915 three political parties led by Benito Mussolini began a governmental system to enforce power, criticism and put an emphasis on aggression and racism for a violent change.
“War is to man what child rearing is to women”
They believed to change you have to clean the past. Mussolini created a branding around the shape of his head so that at any angle you looked at it, he was still present Not only this, but they created an axe that has rod’s tied to it to show symbolised strength and authority. This easily showed the public that a single rod was easily broken but a bunch was unbreakable - making the repetitiveness symbolise strength. Below are a few of the famous slogans that Mussolini came up with: “believe. obey. fight” “a book and a rifle make a perfect fascist” “inactivity is death”
HITLER However, in 1933 Hitler became in power. The Natzi Army began by closing down the Bauhaus (a German art school which started the development of design). This linked back to the face that Hitlers aspiration was to become a professional artist but his dreams were crushed when he failed the entrance exam at the Academy of fine art twice. Whilst he was said to be a failed art student some say that he created something even bigger with the use of visual language.
TOTAL WORK OF ART Hitler used art and design to change a countries thoughts and willingness to do anything. He created “Main Kampf”. Hitler found that without a logo there was no strength, so he created one of the most powerful logo’s of all time - the swastika. The swastika came from culture and was used by Hebrews, Buddhists, Native Americans and the British. It means balance and equality due to the fact that when you turn it around it never loses shape. Even though the meaning was so symbolic, Hitler turned it around and used it to portray power, recognition of the Natzi’s and pure evil.
The next step for Hitler was to create poster designs. He worked with Ludwig Hohlwein to create an idealised vision for Hitler’s “perfect world” of blonde hair and blue eyed people, even though the style of the illustrations showed just how crazy his ideas was. Degenerated art was a series of exhibitions and concerts that promoted getting rid of art that wasn't accepted, people would laugh and make jokes by writing them next to the artists work.
An important thing to think about was how Hitler gave people a sense of belonging by using visual tools to persuade others to think a certain way.
