âI know, I know,â Ryan sighed, rolling his eyes rubbing at his face in exhaustion. âAny talk of karma or how I had this coming to me can just come out right now because, while Iâm sure there will be one day where I am able to laugh over the fact that this is now happening to me, Iâm not there just yet,â he spoke in a harsh tone, one he quickly realized was unjustified. âSorry, I just, lot of emotions and shitâŠâ
Collapsing into the couch, he let his head fall into his hands in despair. He didnât know how to process the information and thoughts raced through his mind. He was terrified far more than he dared admit, feeling an incredible amount of guilt towards Dakota, yet there also sat an odd satisfaction, an odd feeling of utter happiness at the fact that she was actually his daughter. He had long since thought of her as such, but there had always been that thought in the back of his mind reminding him that no, Dakota wasnât truly his and he shouldnât overstep his bounds.
âIsabelle Pierce, you might remember her from our time at Hogwarts? She died a few years ago now. She was practically my saving grace when you and Sophia finally got together,â Ryan chuckled humorlessly at the memory. As soon as it became clear that he had been a very awkward third wheel in their little friendship he had focused on getting out there and having a little fun of his own, only one person had been determined enough to force a friendship onto him along with the occasional night together, and now it seemed that their odd relationship had brought him Dakota.
âDakota, she, she found out when she visited her aunt. Turns out the woman had known for years, just didnât think we ought to bloody know too,â he clenched his fists, despite the small nagging thought that he had been in exactly the same position of knowing and doing nothing to the man who sat opposite him. Hesitantly glancing upwards, he looked to Grayson curiously, thoughts still running through his mind at a million miles an hour. âHow did you never hex me when you found about Connor? Because, honestly, Iâm about ready to fly to Canada and hex Isabelleâs bloody sister.â
âHey man, what comes around goes around. I clearly donât need to tell you that.â Grayson took that moment only to gloat, promising himself not to make any more comments about karma or fate at his friendâs expense. He had handled Graysonâs anger with grace and dignity, and done anything heâd needed to help him through it - and he had a feeling that would have included keeping his distance for good if thatâs what Grayson had needed. He was coming to realize that Ryan was just as good a friend as he always had been.
Grayson sat next to him with a sigh, rubbing his temples tiredly. âTrust me, I know all about the emotions youâre feeling.â His tone was sympathetic, all of his former smugness gone as he tried to think of what had helped him through the same situation. Although that had been Hunter and Mackenzie, so he wasnât so sure the same plan would work as well for Ryan. Grayson supposed he was the one who had to step in, and he took a deep breath, preparing himself to do just that.Â
He chuckled. âYeah, I remember Isabelle. She was the only one who seemed to keep you in line.â Grayson smirked at the memory of the four of them, wishing wistfully that they could go back. It was so much simpler then. âIâm sorry to hear sheâs passed. That must have been rough on Dakota. How is she handling all of this?â
âWonder how that feels.â Grayson muttered darkly, shooting him a pointed glance. As much as he wished his friend didnât have to go through something difficult such as this, he couldnât totally feel for the man - after all, heâd done the same thing he was complaining about now. Heâd known for years, and never said anything. âI wanted to.â He breathed out in a sigh, shaking his head with a mirthless laugh. âWhy do you think I couldnât look at you for weeks after I realised you knew? At least you donât consider her aunt one of your closest friends.â He shrugged off the comment, not intending to inflict any more hurt - it was simply the truth. What Emmalyn and Ryan had done to him had hurt him in about every way possible, but they were past it now. Mostly.
