No one escaped Moonrise Towers unscathed, but Lia is fine. She can take care of herself.

Lia's wounds must have reopened in the escape. She doesn't know when it happened—or, maybe she did, but she assumed it was the same stitch in her side that she always earns running for her life. Maybe it was the wall coming down, or the sprint, or one of those guards got a lucky shot at her before she was out of range. All she knows is that as the rest of them break the boat's tethers, she touches her side and feels sharp pain radiate from that spot, a wave of nausea accompanying it.

Damn cultists. They'd put in the minimum amount of effort needed to keep them alive after torturing them. None of them had been spared even a weak potion or a touch of healing magic, though Lia might have bitten any hand that offered it. They'd torn her open and taken some pleasure in stitching her back together just as painfully while she tried not to run out of curses or to pass out. Her bandages were dirty when they'd wrapped her up, dried dark red by the time they'd dragged her back to the cell and shoved her to the ground. The first thing she remembered after the pain stopped blinding her was Cal crouched around her, between her and the cultists who were already wandering back to their duties.

(The fact that she hadn't been able to stand again without Cal supporting her weight still flushes her body with shame. She should've walked it off, like she is now.)

The bandages are damp with her blood. She reaches under her shirt to check and grimaces. They don't have time to stop; it's a one-way boat out or nothing. She takes a breath and readjusts her corset belt to hide the way her shirt is starting to stain. Later.

Cal grabs her hand. She's been lingering too long, and she only has just enough time to hope that her hand isn't slick with her own blood. "Come on," he calls her, breathless from the excitement and the taste of freedom. She lets him tug her down into the boat. It rocks under her unsteady feet, but Cal draws her to his side as they push off. Not a moment too soon. Lia watches their saviors, the same people who'd come to their aid at the Grove, stay behind to buy them time. That's two she owes them, now. It's getting to be a pattern, but not one she regrets, not when they're finally out of that cell. Cal sighs with relief and slumps against her. She bears her teeth against a grimace as he jostles her wound.

The dank smell of the water should cover up the scent of blood, or if it doesn't, they're all covered in enough of it—old and dried; the cultists didn't leave anyone out of their torture, and they didn't provide anything to wash with—that no one should be able to tell. She'll fix herself up when they get to safety, without Cal finding out. She won't have him guilty about this.

(The cultists had hurt Cal enough, and she could handle the pain in his place. Rolan would have understood.)

She takes labored breaths under the guise of exhaustion. Each one leaves her side throbbing. Her shirt's fabric is growing heavier, damp, clinging at her skin. She elbows Cal to get her arm free.

She undoes the knot of her corset belt with clumsy fingers and tightens the lacing up. The pressure will hold the wound until they're safe.

"Are you sure you should lace it that tight?" Cal asks. She flicks her ears twice like that'll clear up how far away his voice sounds, like she's hearing him through a poorly enchanted sending stone. "You're breathing pretty hard." She elbows him again. Her side spasms.

"Shut up, Cal." She's fine. She'll breathe through it. Every rock of the boat sends new splinters of pain through her body, but the pressure is helping somewhat. She should be bleeding slower. She's got a lot of it to lose, if being tortured by those cultists taught her anything.

She's had worse. She got jumped during their stint in Avernus. Clawed up. Bitten. Anything that could go wrong, did. Her head swims as she remembers Rolan throwing an imp meters away with one overwhelming shockwave of power, just because it had torn out some of her hair. She chuckles. That clump still hasn't grown back all the way. Cal puts his arm around her, and she lets her mind wander—strung between painful rhythm of the boat, rising, falling, rising again, and her brother rubbing her arm like he's afraid she'll disappear if he stops.

Landfall jolts her to vicious awareness. Her head rings so loudly that she can't hear what anyone's saying. It's like the knives are back, freshly tearing her open, and Lia gulps down air-

"I told you not to lace it that tight," Cal says. He tries to undo it, and she slaps his hand.

His flinch stings. Sorry, she wants to say, but the word is stuck somewhere in her lungs, tossed about by every difficult inhale she manages.

"Let's- Let's just find Rolan, okay?" Cal says, carefully, and it's hard to tell if he's acting like she's fragile or volatile. Both, maybe. She often feels like both; anger's just more useful than fear, she's always known that. Elturel made it clearer, and she wouldn't let the Absolute's bastards drag anything out of her but rage.

She needs to snap at him to leave her alone so she can patch herself up, but the shock in his eyes when she slapped him, the confusion that gasped out of him, and Lia can't tell her brother no when he looks at her like that.

A few more minutes. They'll find Rolan. Deal with Rolan. She won't let Rolan find out she's hurt either. He'd make a scene about it. She can do all of that, so long as she can stand up. She tests her legs, and they're weak enough that she trips getting out of the boat. She falls into Cal, and the world keeps tumbling for a few moments longer.

"Never got my sea legs," she manages to joke. Cal steadies her. He looks… worried. That's not part of the plan. She has to be fine. She can show him, straightening her back and carefully watching her steps. One foot after another, that's it. She doesn't have room to think about anything more than that, so she's glad Cal takes the lead.

And her hand. He didn't let go after she stumbled. If he needs it, she'll let him hold on. She wraps her other arm around herself, pinning it close over her wound to keep more pressure on it.

She's freezing. She expected the inside of the inn to be warm, but the hearth must not have been fed enough.

Rolan yells.

That's familiar. That's almost comfortable. It's easy to meet him there, to be angry at him for playing the fool and running off into the shadows to save them like she was told he tried to while he's angry they were captured in the first place. She can't feel the pain as sharply when they're going at each other.

"Lia," Cal tries to interrupt.

Lia ignores him, leaning towards Rolan with her teeth bared. He's giving in, the argument's over barely after it's started, but she needs the fight. It's keeping her grounded. It explains why she's shaking so much, if she's furious. Gods, why is it so fucking cold! Couldn't this place be any warmer than a dungeon? And dim, too; she thought this place was safe from the shadow curse, so why is it getting so dark?

Does she say that all out loud? She's not sure. Words fill her mouth up like bile.

Rolan's making a stupid face at her.

And then, all of a sudden, she's not looking at Rolan's face. She's pressed facefirst against Rolan's shoulder with his arms around her.

"Lia!" Cal shouts as she tries to get her bearings. She grabs at Rolan's robes haphazardly in an attempt to haul herself back up, but her arms are numb and weak, her fingers barely able to cling to anything she reaches for. Rolan readjusts his grip.

"What happened?" she hears him say. "Why is she-"

"She's bleeding." One of them pulls her corset belt away from her wounded side. Lia hisses out a warning, but whoever it is lets go because of the burble of blood that follows the pressure being let up. Her shirt is too soaked to take it. It spills warm down her waist as her she struggles to think. It's almost like she's falling asleep, little by little; first her limbs, then her mind shutting off thought by thought, until her eyelids are too heavy to keep open.

"Get help," Rolan says, "now!"

Her legs give after that. Rolan can't hold her up.

They've tried before. Cal can carry her or Rolan, if he has to, but when she'd picked Rolan up once, she'd dropped him on his arse, and Rolan hadn't even attempted lifting her.

He tries very hard to this time. She doesn't hit the ground. She just meets it, slowly.

She groans into Rolan's shoulder as her side burns with pain. It's the only heat left in her entire body.

"You knew, didn't you?" Rolan says. She can hear him, and she can feel the words rumbling from his chest. Her eyelids droop. "Damn you, Lia." There's a dull pressure against one of her horns that she can't place, and then Rolan's hand slides over her side to the source of her pain. "Hold still."

Rolan's magic patters over her skin like rain, and it sneaks into her mouth, warm and sweet like cinnamon, even though Rolan always flushes and insists his magic isn't something she can taste. He's wrong, though. It's home, wherever they go. Rolan is murmuring at her, and she can't catch the words, just the strain in his voice as he focuses through them.

The pain lightens. Lia exhales and lets her eyes slide shut all the way. 

Rolan jostles her rudely. "No, that was just to make it stop hurting. You need to stay awake until Cal gets someone who can heal you." Lia grumbles. "Stay awake," Rolan orders.

"Piss off," she says into his robes. His magic is sweet, but he smells awful, like he's been drinking and hasn't cleaned himself up with that cantrip he always uses to get out of doing real work. 

That's not like him. Lia frowns.

"Lia, don't you dare ignore me," he says, voice growing tighter.

"You're scared," she slurs to tease him, struggling to get the words out. "Thought great wizards don't get scared."

"Most wizards don't have you for a sister." Lia fists his robes. She tries to hold on as tight as she can, like it'll keep her conscious so long as she doesn't let him go. He might smell like he's been drunk, but she smells like blood, and dirt, and piss. It was a small cell. Not a lot of privacy.

"I want a bath," Lia says. "Warm bath. Rolan."

"I'll heat a bath for you, if you promise not to fall asleep." She nods. She can do that. "What happened to you?"

"Me or Cal." Words roll around in her mouth like wads of cotton, leaving her tongue dry and thick in their wake. "Pissed them off, so it'd be me." She blinks with great effort to keep her eyes open. Rolan needs her awake. Rolan's an arse. She's so tired, she can't feel her legs.

"Of course you did." Rolan sighs.

So would I, is what she chooses to hear, and she smirks.

Slowly, so slowly, her eyes slide shut again. Some part of her remembers she's not supposed to let that happen, Rolan needs her to- To do something, for some reason, for- A little rest won't hurt. He won't even notice if she curls up so that he can't see her face.

"Lia," she hears, too far away to care.

"Lia!" She fights. Rolan needs her. She can't pry her eyes open, no matter how much she struggles. The shadows are reaching for her, hungry for-

"Thank the Gods," Rolan breathes. She can only hear him. The other voices are nothing but meaningless sound. A hand curls around her as if to tug her away from Rolan.

"No," Lia whines into the dark behind her closed eyelids, "no, let go. Rolan!"

"Let her see your wound." She relaxes. He's still there. "It's scarier when you're listening to me. Will she be alright?"

He must get an answer. There's a gentle coolness against the injury, nothing like the cold that's been creeping into Lia's body. It soothes her like Rolan's magic did, even if it's nowhere near as familiar.

"He's better at magic than you," Lia tells… someone, proudly. She's pretty sure they start laughing. Or maybe Rolan starts laughing.

"She's alright." Cal. Everyone's safe, then. "She'll love being reminded that she said that."

Distantly, she remembers that she was trying not to make them worry about her. She'll probably care about that later. Right now, it's nice that Cal's holding her hand again, and Rolan's letting her lay on him. It can't be comfortable. She's almost certain her horns are digging into him somewhere.

"Thank you," Cal tells someone. Her healer, she assumes. It's nice to not be bleeding out anymore, even if her whole body still feels weighted with lead.

"Now you can go to sleep," Rolan says. She's almost certain it's his fingers in her hair, combing through the dirty tangles. Lia nods as best she can. There's only warmth to fall back into now—no shadows, no numbness, no fear. She lets it embrace her, and into her dreams, she only brings the fuzzy echo of her brothers' voices.

Hello again! I wasn't expecting such a sweet and thoughtful response it's you who's made MY day :D the siblings have been my favourite NPCs since my first playthrough so I'm ecstatic to have a chance to yap about them (hopefully you don't mind an equally long response hehe)

First of all know whoever critiqued you for your work had ZERO right. I'm obviously biased in your favor because I adore your fics but no one has a right to criticize writers who take time out of their day to write and put their work out there for people to enjoy for free. Don't like what you're reading? Find something else or write your own stuff! Please don't let their words get to you I cannot understand why some people act that way unprovoked <3

Now for a more cheerful yapping session! I think Cal and Lia without tadpoles would definitely be a lot harder to recruit. Lia is down to put blades and spells to work on the goblins but following Tav and the gang on the rest of their journey is a big commitment. And it's practically impossible to recruit Cal long-term unless Lia and Rolan decide to join the group. 99 difficulty class roll right there. He just wants to stick with his family no matter where they end up going.

Things are a lot simpler with tadpoled Cal/Lia. Getting rid of the tadpoles is a pretty good reason to stick by your companions and it's why everyone in the game doesn't immediately split up. Whether she's a companion or the leader of the team Lia is dragging everyone (willing or unwilling) to help every poor soul they come across. Her tent needs to be as far away from Astarion's as possible I know she wouldn't be able to stand him at first. I think she wouldn't mind letting Cal and Rolan tag along in this situation because literally all of Faerûn is in danger and it's only right to have as many people trying to save the world as possible.

Tadpoled Cal is a bit more... Pitiful in my mind. Waking up on the nautiloid, back in Avernus but this time without his older siblings, having to deal with Lae'zel and Shadowheart bickering while they're surrounded by mindflayers. Yeah, he isn't taking it so well. I picture Cal being way more hesitant to let Rolan and Lia tag along once he knows of his condition. Maybe because he doesn't want his problems to get in the way of Rolan's apprenticeship and Lia's future. Or maybe because he's terrified of how dangerous the Absolute and the True Souls are and doesn't want them to be put at risk. Rolan and Lia definitely wouldn't let him handle it by himself so I imagine he would make the heartbreaking decision to leave without ever letting them know. Cal's going through a whole coming of age story in my mind I love this guy to death!

Now this scenario is a bit more unlikely. Rolan, Lia & Cal all ending up with tadpoles and under the protection of the prism. As unlikely as it would be for all of them to get kidnapped at the same time I think they could all benefit from being forced to go through it together. They all have a hard time putting their thoughts into words and I personally need to see them using their tadpoles to finally understand each other. At the same time, they need a break from terrible life events after Elturel please stop tormenting this poor family

I'd give anything for these three to have their own game I want to know more about them every time they're on screen! The short story we have with Rolan being their found family, Rolan and Lia loving each other to death but never managing to agree with one another, and Cal having such a sweet soft heart feeling the constant strain of his older siblings relationship. They put too much work into these characters to only give them an hourish of content :')

I'm sincerely looking forward to whatever you plan on writing in the future! In the meantime, I'll be rereading everything you've already posted like a crazy person to get my fix. Thank you for the effort you put into your writing and please never let anyone tell you to stop <3

Hello again!! My face when I saw this ask appear! Of course!! That is, quite literally, why I am here! To find others to connect with over these things and characters we enjoy so much. Please, yap away! Your thoughts and ideas must be heard!

Cal and Lia without tadpoles, you say? Yes, I think I agree that, sort as it it unfolds with (most of) the actual companions in the game, the tadpoles are the catalyst that makes the group cohesive.

Initial tension between Lia and Astarion because she can't stand him at first which slowly turns into a genuine, teasing friendship over the course of the game?? Who are you who is so wise in the ways of science? I believe it one thousand percent, this is the truth. I would live for their ambient banter if you take them both out adventuring. I feel like she'd have fairly good rapport with the rest of them. Any thoughts on Cal in this regard?

And Cal as a tragic figure? Say less. (By which I mean say much, much more). I wrote this a while back, which your comments here reminded me of. I adore everything you wrote in that paragraph. It made my heart hurt so much in a good way. God, could you imagine? I could see Lia waking up and being able to channel her fear by sprinting into action, and she has the confidence to challenge the player character and other companions, whereas Cal's worry might be almost overpowering. As you say, I think it could be psychologically devastating. And Lia and Rolan waking up in the morning to find that Cal has left without them?? I wonder if he would leave a note, because not telling them at all he knows would destroy them. He tells them to not blame each other, he just wants to make sure they're okay. But the way they would take it out on each other anyway? Excuse me, for I have perished.

Speaking of which, if you like Cal's coming-of-age journey the works of @vera-king-hrfl and @crowwolf may interest you.

When I started writing about these three, I was wondering who each of them might have attraction to. To be clear, I adore all different headcanons and interpretations of characters or pairings in different ways, but I ended up in my first fic suggesting that Cal had a crush on Wyll and Dammon (incidentally, I have an unfinished fic about that that's been sitting as a draft forever, so thank you for drawing my attention back to it!) and Lia for Lae'zel, though potentially also Shadowheart, Karlach, and Halsin. My thinking at the time was that Cal was needing the emotional support of someone who was softer and more understanding, and Lia needed someone who could relate to her fire and drive, which neither of them were getting elsewhere.

I completely understand that this was not the deeply poignant point you were making, but all three of them being tadpoled also made me think of the comedic potential of them being able to communicate telepathically. Kind of like the three-way call in Mean Girls where they're trying to have an argument but they forget who can hear or accidentally say/think something they meant to communicate in the other way. Sort of stuff like:

Lia: Grab that. Let's clear the path. Rolan: Shall we lay out a carpet while we're at it? Rolan, to Cal: *Obviously we're going to, but Gods must she be insufferable about it?* Cal: I don't think that's fair, Rolan. Lia: What's not fair? Rolan using the bloody tadpole again? Cal: Uhhh...

But can you imagine in your suggestion of something devastating happening and unknowingly they hear the devastating inner thoughts of each other, thinking the worst? The three of them caring so deeply for each other and never quite having the language, safety, or ability to share it makes for such an emotionally compelling story. I think for me personally I actually really enjoy that it's a fairly small amount of content, because that gives us room to have discussions like these!

And incidentally, thank you again for taking the time to share such lovely words! The tadpole in my brain has been starved of Cal Lia & Rolan content but thanks to your fics it's finally being graciously fed :)

Reading through What if Rolan was a Companion made me think about what it would be like to have Cal or Lia as a companion and by extension Rolan tags along as a plus one because of course he wouldn't leave either of them behind

Especially if Cal or Lia had a tadpole and he didn't I'm sure he's losing sleep over it

Absolutely agree with you - I can only imagine how much more frantic he would be about making sure they are safe if either Cal or Lia had a tadpole.

As far as companions go, I feel like Lia could be fairly easy to recruit if you agree to fight with the tieflings and offer to protect them so they could all get to Baldur's Gate. As for Cal, I conceptualized him as so often following his siblings' leads and looking to them for direction that I wonder what it would take for him to assume a more independent role - perhaps leveraging that? A hefty charisma check to persuade him that they need to be able to resolve disagreements between themselves, or that he needs to be his own person? Oh lordy, I can see how easily both of these could leave to 'good', positive ending or a 'bad', painful one. Either way I would be 100% here for it. Interested in your thoughts too!

Funnily enough, in the "What if Rolan was a Companion...and Everything Went Wrong" draft, Rolan does get tadpoled, and now you have me wondering how the other two would react to getting it done to them.

I wonder if it would heighten what we already see of them; with Lia's rage at the cultists ignited further - I wonder if she would manage to resist it and thus become increasingly distrusting and mortified if the player character does, or if absolutely pushed to protect the people around her perhaps relenting and utilizing its powers and the fact she had to do so even further cements her hatred for what the Absolute has forced them to. I think of her disdain for Zevlor after he was overcome, and how she would be unable to reconcile her own sense of failure in that regard. And Cal questioning his own role and identity now that has been unwillingly been made a host - could he still mediate between the two of them with that weight on his shoulders? How would it complicate the dynamics of the three? Perhaps it could be something that builds the relationship between Rolan and Lia, or perhaps it would drive them further apart in their fear for what is happening to Cal...

*Gasp* Ok, ok hold up!

I had a few versions of this image commissioned for my fic as how I saw BG3 when I played through it, but new idea! Imagine a spin-off where you follow each of them as a the main character in their own story with the other two as the companions? Make them each have a more equal representation in the image - with Lia's bow & arrow and Cal's spear & shield more prominent and with some sort of colourful accent - and you could highlight the one you chose on a loading screen and their silhouette would reveal the entire character model. Breathlessanon, you're a genius.

WIP Wednesday Tuesday for "Her Harper, His Sufferer" 🪉🩸

Thank you so much for the tag, @graysparrowao3 ♥️♥️ very happy to share another WIP from my Harper Geraldus/Nienna fic called "Her Harper, His Sufferer"! 🪉🩸 Spent the whole morning thinking it was Wednesday and posted this, so happy WIP Tuesday! Haha

They say to write the fic you want to read, and so I am! It's self-indulgent but I hope that it brings good feels to anyone else who has had their heart captured by yet another BG3 non-romanceable NPC with less than a minute and a half of dialogue 😂🫣

Context: After the Watcher naming ceremony, Geraldus walks Nienna back to the Open Hand Temple, and they share a hug that changes things between them in a way that cannot be ignored.

Content Notes: There's suggestive lines about Geraldus being horny for Nienna! 👀 This involves mentions of his physical sensations of arousal.

Word Count: ~283

Nienna's arms encircled Geraldus' shoulders, resting her head in the crook of his neck and squeezing him gently as he felt her warm breath against his skin, their lips only separated by mere inches. Feeling emboldened by the Frostkiss ale he enjoyed during the ceremony, he nuzzled his head against hers while he returned her embrace, slipping both of his arms around her waist and holding her firmly enough to help her feel safe (and to satisfy his own burning desire to touch her), but loosely enough that she could break off the hug at any point. He could smell her perfume at her pulse point just below her ear, smiling as he realized how much of a privilege it was to be in close enough proximity to be enveloped by her spicy vanilla aroma, since it was subtle and wore close to her skin. He would never allow himself to take that privilege for granted.

They stood in each other's arms in a comfortable silence tinged with something unspoken. Geraldus felt an almost overwhelming heat burning across his chest, up to his face and then down to pool in his lower belly, causing him to ache as he realized the threshold that was being crossed. This wasn't platonic. It was undeniably something more. And it would have to be acknowledged. But maybe not yet. He would savor the ache of desire he felt in this liminal space where neither of them had to say anything. They could just be. Together. Her Harper, and his Sufferer.

Moments continued to pass.

But she didn't break the hug, and neither did he.

Several more moments passed. She still didn't step away.

And neither did he.

The righteous Blade of Frontiers didn't look that righteous to her at this point, the sounds of the river was almost soothing as the scent of the Hells still permeated the air. The red corpse on the ground, a mission that was accomplished. As he grapled with the last memories that had been imprinted in their minds, played off as a lie, as a deception. Still he looked at her as if she held answers to a question that was ravaging him.

A few years back I was engaging and writing with impressive frequency - there was no secret to it, I was just unemployed and able at the time. That changed significantly and recently I was working three jobs concurrently which was akin to strapping myself to a rocket and firing it directly towards burn-out.

But I did a lot of reflecting on what I care about and how to achieve that and there's light at the end of the tunnel. Having time to write again lately got me feeling free again. We're so back, baby.

Speaking of which, in the next chapter of Meet Me By The Trams Zevlor smacks Aradin over the head. There's also going to be a Shrek 2 reference, so wins all round I think.

“Alright, mate,” Aradin scowled. “No one asked you to.” Aradin’s head snapped forward. A swift palm struck the back of his skull sending his trainers stumbling and his arms flying out at wild angles. Stunned by the chastising strike into a remarkable impression of a startled pigeon, Aradin blinked. “Okay,” he said slowly, neck twisting to confirm his head was still attached. “Now you really are acting like my dad.” Lowering his hand, Zevlor glared down the length of his nose. “No one asked, indeed.”
