Sort of rating every official Montgomery Gator plush I own
Disclaimer, I do not own all of them. We are gonna rate these both their appearance and cuddliness, discuss their price, and note down anything unique about each one!
This is mostly my own opinion but I'm gonna try to be more objective about it. maybe.
the small Goodstuff one:
He's a bit smaller than your average funko plush, with an, uh, interesting side profile. These come in multiple sizes afaik, including a kinda massive one. I got this little guy from a claw machine, so I think they are made to be carnival toys.
Appearance: From the front, I think he is actually kinda adorable. I think they are sort of meant to resemble the Funko ones. Of course, being prize plush, they have mostly printed on decals, and lots of awkward stitching that results in wrinkles. Oh yeah, and the side profile. I don't think my boy can breathe like that.
4/10
Cuddliness: While a carnival plush, he doesn't have the rough fabric typical to most of those. He is reasonable soft and squishy. I think if you had a bigger one, he could be rather cuddly. But for most people, this one's kinda small for that.
3.3/10 FOR SMALL SIZEzssss
Price: Potentially either the least or most expensive option, depending on how much you spent on that game you won him on! As for secondhand, the smaller variants (7-11 inches) are probably between 10-20 bucks. The 30 inch ones though, are gonna put you out of a few hundred. I saw one 20 inch one for like 80. I would have no idea how to rate this numerically when prices are so everywhere (I got mine for a dollar lol).
Other Notes: Since they are meant to hang, they have fabric loops on their heads. A smaller one could be converted into a keychain?
Overall: Slighty better than expected for a prize plush. I love him, but I can't let that get in the way. 3/10 to 4/10, depending on how you acquire.
Probably the cutest style for this character, and from the Tumblr poll I did a while back, also the most popular. By a lot. I got this guy from Spencers, was walking past in the mall and had to do a double take. They only had Monty and Chica merch left, perfect for me.
Appearance: Unlike many other monty plush, his side profile doesn't look awkward at all! I think they designed him very well. Most of his design is embroidered or differing fabrics, but nearly all his tan (what should be yellow but idk maybe it worked better for this design) areas are just printed on. But unlike the funko or goodstuff, his accessories are all separate pieces, rather than embroidered or printed, which looks great. His fur looks a little shorter the other yootooz sb plush (which, gator, sure), but that makes it lose color towards the seams. It's not hugely noticeable, though.
8/10. He's very cute.
Cuddliness: In some ways, he is the most cuddly, in terms of size and lack of sharp parts. But there are some things to consider. He has many felt pieces: Belts, glasses, and shoulders. The belts and shoulders are slightly softer felt; but it's still felt, so the texture could bother some. His glasses, specifically the yellow bits, are much stiffer, much rougher. The short fur itself feels soft IF its the "right way" of the fur. It feels rougher the other way. So, cuddliness depends. If you have no issue with the softer felt, probably would rate higher.
7/10, possibly less or more depending on the person.
Price: is 30 bucks, plus shipping. Getting it in a physical store was 35 dollars for me, so the only real advantage to finding it in person is the possibility of picking your favorite one. As such, it's pretty middle of the ground price, in comparison to the other Montys. However, I've never seen any sales or anything on the yootooz website, so if you get it from there, expect that price.
Other Notes: No other special features or anything, but he was definitely made to be on of the "cuter" monty merch out there. If that's what you're looking for, he's a good pick. And he can work as both decorative and cuddly!
The most expensive and the most complicated, straight up the action figure of plushes. Detachable limbs, multiple different types of fabric, and accessories!
Appearance: Yeah where do I start. Other than fur, I think 6 different types of material are used (not including embroidery). Faux leather, shiny/glittery smooth fabric + another glittery fabric for the pants, stiffer and softer felts, clear plastic for glasses, and some other rough fabric for the inside of the mouth that I'm just now noticing. The only printed fabric is the spots on the pants, which would probably look funny to sew on.
Everything else is embroidered or different fabric colors sewn together. While not as traditionally cute in comparison to other options, he's super well made and detailed, and pretty accurate to game monty. Also, I still find him adorable.
His eyes are also buttons. Up to you if you find it cute or creepy.
9.8/10. I REAALLY want to say 10/10 but the side profile is still a little goofy lmao. So I'll dock it a little. just a little.
Cuddliness: Oh how the mighty have fallen. His multitude of materials, while great for the looks, knock him many points here. The felt of his claws, teeth and glasses scrape, the glitter fabric of his pants feels pretty awful (the shiny glitter fabric is fine). Also, try not to lose one of his limbs. I wonder if there is a market for Hex replacement parts...
Though, I find his regular fur to be reasonably soft, at least. And maybe you could remove his arms and legs-no actually that sounds kinda fucked up. If you want a cuddly hex plush, don't go with the security breach ones.
3/10. You could try, but your might hurt yourself. I guess that's accurate, actually.
Price: At 67 bucks, he's the most expensive. Shut up I know what you're thinking. HOWEVER, they do seems to have sales; like the Labor Day sale, which I think was 20% off? I was able to combine this with the "FNAnniversy 15% off" at the time, so maybe try it with the whole "10% for signing up for some newsletter". I have no guarantees there, though.
Other Notes: The magnets are probably the big "feature" of these stuffed animals. The head, arms, legs, and tail all come off, and can be switched out with other hex magnet plush (or just tossed around/switched about if you only have the one like me). It also makes him the most posable. Other options are stiffer (just in the sense that they have short limbs that don't really move, their stuffing is fine).
He comes with "his" bass guitar (I KNOW WHAT YOU DID), with magnet that connects to his hands, or a band that wraps around his neck. However, the guitar is just printed fabric for the most part. You also get a drawstring bag with a cute design, and a trading card with neat art.
Oh, and the shipping tracking kinda sucks. I thought monty was lost in the mail for a while. Or maybe he was. But he showed up!
Overall: 7.8/10. He's not cuddly, but has enough extra stuff going for him that I'll give him an extra point. no its not favoritism shut up.
The classic. Well not really, I think around sister location Funko kinda had an identity crisis in their designs. Certainly lasted through the SB line, with the half-bulging-half-not eyes that look simply wrong, Feddy's weirdly sculpted mouth, and lots of printed on fabric. Thankfully, with his glasses, Monty escapes some of these issues! Some.
Also, I swear the blacklight effect looks cooler in real life. It's really lame in a photo.
Appearance: The main reason I like this one is the colors. The neon on black is a favorite of mine, and I like how the hands are two different colors. For the shape, he's much better than the other SB plushes in his line. This all makes him very adorable. However, his mohawk doesn't like to sit up straight, there's still some extra print with the belt and stomach, and for some reason, he's missing the pants print on his behind. (guess not as bad as the yootooz figure, who doesn't wear them at all) His teeth embroidery are also not connected to his mouth, but that was probably me getting unlucky.
7/10. Fun colors and cute design. What more could you want, really.
Cuddliness: The softness of THIS VERSION's fur is comparable to the Yootooz; soft only one way. But, still soft, especially in comparison to the first round of SB Funkos (at least I've been told, I don't own one). Without a lot of different fabrics, he is all-around cozy, except for the embroider on his face and that one singular piece of felt that is his hair.
4/10. With a similar size and softness to the Goodstuff one, he gets a similar rating. HOWEVEr, his shape kinda hugs your arm and that gets him a little bit extra.
Price: really depends. I'm pretty sure when I got him recently, he was 22 bucks (new), but it fluctuates a lot apparently (same listing is 45 bucks right now wtf). I would think he was originally 15, but I doubt he's still in production. Secondhand listings are wherever they want to be. So he POTENTIALLY one of the cheaper options, but not always. There's also the normal colored Monty, which you can get secondhand for like 15 or so.
Other Notes: He does glow in blacklight. It does look pretty cool in person. However, I wouldn't get it for that if you don't prefer the color scheme to the original, unless you have a shelf with a blacklight setup, or are planning to bring him somewhere with one. Like, he'd look pretty cool in a club. Or lazer tag.
If you want the normal Monty, keep in mind that there was two versions of that plush released. The first one has really cheap "fur", like that scratchy fabric that carnival prizes often have. The second release was put alongside the blacklights, and uses the same, softer fur. If your looking for the second release, it will probably be more expensive; but it might be hard to tell from a photo UNLESS it has tags (first had standard fnaf tag, second had SB themed tag)
Overall: 5.5/10. Not so complicated as the more expensive ones. I think I've been conditioned from childhood to find the shape of the funko plush to be the cutest thing ever tbh. Like, he's just a little guy.
I want to say that someday I would like to have collected every monty plush that exists. But. realistically the only other one I REALLY want is the Sanshee. I am determined to get it someday, but its such a price sink; I only justified the Hex plush bc I got it 35% off (the exact same price as the sanshee but more stuff). Also their pin is super cute. I love how its pretty close in design to the game plush. It's very much a "choose one once every six months or so" for me, so I'll call back in a few months. I hope. (please dont sell out ill die)
I can live without the bioworld backpack and justtoys keychain. It's for the best.
AaAnd there's the other variants yootooz, funko, and goodstuff. Honestly the only one I really like is the shoulder rider, probably because its just a smaller, cuter, and slightly more functional version of the plush I already have lol. Buut half for that reason, and that I think having it attached to your shoulder would feel irritating after like two minutes, its not something I'd get. Pick either the sitting plush or the shoulder rider and stick with it. Or spend bucks deluxe on a used standing plush, but those don't look right to me so.
Yeah anyway the hex is my favorite. I'm pretty sure many would disagree with rating him above the yootooz. I love both of mine, but I wouldn't have spent way more on the hex if I wasn't a fan lmao.
Also I do realize that I considered the size a lot in how high the Cuddly factor rated. Many people dont mind the smaller ones. Like, funko monty would rate a lot higher in that if you were giving it to a kid.
I did not really factor price into final rating, so it really ended up being that the more expensive ones rated higher. I mean, they are softer and bigger and have more detail, so sure.
if your asking why I like this alligator so much. I really love all the security breach designs, but an alligator animatronic was new and cool; it helps that I like gators and crocs already. I also like the lore/theories with his connection to Edwin (hmmmm I wonder why he seems so hostile to Freddy and Bonnie, but not Roxy and Chica? You have something to say bout that mimic?). I will never be a monty apologist bro 100% killed bonnie
