Republicans doth protest a little too much
Domestic terrorists vow to kill domestic terrorism bill in SenateâŠshocker đ
The governmentâs funds are running out. Tough decisions may soon present themselves.
The people responsible for obstructing this wonât come as a surprise to anyone
So pretty much the Republican partyâs playbook today, minus that one thing that we made it (basically) impossible for them to do.
Something Elon Muskâs Twitter is going to find out the hard way.
âExtremistsâ because they stopped thinking he was so great after he lost his mind and became just another Trump.

Thatâs like your opinion, man (aka why Iâm over the Oscars)
Not sure why itâs taken me so long to realize this, but movies, like any art is inherently subjective. Yeah, I know, no duh. But seriously, I think Iâve spent most of my life thinking I just didnât âgetâ something, or there was some secret creative sauce that professionals had the recipe for.
Sure, there are fundamentals that make some movies better than others (e.g., more compelling characters or believable conflict, better pacing, etc.) However, after you pass a certain threshold of good, like 80% Rotten Tomatoes good, your personal tastes/background matter far more than anything in the script or on the screen when it comes to whether a movie will resonate with you or not.
Which brings me to the Oscars, which literally is trying to award the best of the best. The problem is, in many categories, itâs really unclear what makes one movie better than the other nominees, and more broadly, what makes these 5-10 nominees better than all the other great movies out there. Especially for categories like âBest Picture,â Iâm sure picking the winner at random would be equally crowd-pleasing as picking it through the mysterious criteria (aka the subjective opinions) of The Academy.
Once you really start to notice this, you canât really look at the Oscars the same way againâwhich leads me to my second point.
If after a certain âgreatâ threshold, what makes one movie better than another one is mostly subjective, then the bigger problem with the Oscars is that rather than acting like a person (or group of people), it tries to act like an impartial governing body over film.
It sounds silly, but I believe this is why most film nerds, and general movie fans in general, get pissed when the Oscars âget something wrongââas opposed to an individual film critic. Itâs almost like The Academy is a jury in a trial (who we also donât see) that we trust to make an âofficialâ unbiased call based on evidence. ButâŠthatâs impossible to do with movies.
Still, The Academy casts a long shadow because of how it brands itself as this official, impartial judge. When more diverse movies are desperately trying to break through, the belief that The Academy is always ârightâ can become a big problem. Just take a movie like The Farewell. Itâs a phenomenal movie (in my opinion), which should have gotten nominated for Best Picture. If it did, it wouldâve gotten vastly more attention, which is something a movie with an entirely Asian cast needs, and deserves.
Thatâs why I actually love how gaming blog Kotaku did its âtop 10 games of 2019â list this year. The site itself, which obviously has no thoughts of its own, didnât publish its âofficialâ list of the top 10 games. Instead, it published the personal top 10 lists of a few of its journalists. For example, https://kotaku.com/zack-zwiezens-top-10-games-of-2019-1840540510
I love this approach because it acknowledges the inherent subjectivity with picking the top 10 games of any year. In reading each of these stories, I found certain journalistsâ lists resonated with me more than others, but overall, I got exposed to way more games than I would have if Kotaku the site just published a single story, which wouldnât have entirely satisfy anyone.
I really hope more publications start to follow Kotakuâs model in the coming years. As for the Oscars, I think itâs just time for them to go away.
Meeting an old co-worker for lunch and endlessly debating on the walk over if I should:
1. Hug them
2. Shake their hand
3. Position myself strategically to avoid any possibility for physical contact
âWe had dorm rooms next to each other freshman year. Â We mainly just played a lot of board games: Risk, Scrabble, Scattergories, a Trivial Pursuit game from the 1980âs, which everyone sucked at. Â But we became best friends, and the next year decided to get a house together. Â Thatâs when things started to get tense. Â We began sitting closer together. Â We were touching more. Â Weâd play with each otherâs hands. Â Never holding hands, but playing with hands. Â And weâd even fall asleep in the same bed together. Â There was a time that she told me goodnight, and I swear I felt her brush my lips, but by the time I opened my eyes she was out of the room. Â Neither of us had ever dated a woman. Â And I was terrified to try anything. Â We were such good friends. Â There was always this fear that if I voiced the desire, it would ruin our friendship. Â But one night we were out for drinks at a hotel where Al Capone used to stay. Â I was feeling pretty drunk, so I leaned over and said: âSometimes I feel like I want to kiss you.â Â And she replied: âSometimes I do too.â Â I didnât say a thing. Â I wasnât even sure that Iâd heard her correctly. Â I just kept thinking: âOh my God, itâs happening. Â Itâs happening.â Â Then once we finished our drinks, and started walking home, I stopped her in front of a bridge. Â I said: âShall we do it here?â Â It was December 12th, 2002. Â And even though we got married five years ago, thatâs the day we celebrate as our anniversary.â
Woke up this morning feeling worn out and thinking, "man, I really need a day off work." Only to then realize that I had two days off literally just last week.
Ouch!
When I first started working, I had it in my head that taking a day off once and a while would totally restore me and make work more bearable. Now that I've been in the workplace for eight years, I realize that there's simply no amount of time off that makes one ready to go back to the grind. Especially if you have things you care about at home (a partner, hobbies, children), work is just literally time spent away from what you enjoy.
Overheard a networking lunch...
"It's really my goal to get to 500 LinkedIn connections"
"There are a lot of people there who -- I hate to say this -- have lives."
"You can work 50 hours a week if you want! There's enough work."
"I wanted a pair of black jeans so I went to TJs."
"Trader Joes?"
Reading Bill Ayers âDemand the Impossibleâ had me wondering...is the US governmentâs real fear of universal basic income not that people wouldnât want to work anymore but rather that absolutely no one would volunteer for the military anymore? Want would the US do without its greatest asset: its Amy?
