Q & A with Peter Bulut Jr. – Canuck Pale Ale
Q & A with Peter Bulut Jr. - Owner of GLB answers questions regarding new Canuck Pale Ale -
Q. Why change the name from Crazy Canuck Pale Ale to Canuck Pale Ale? PB: We wanted to take a different approach as we hit the 5-year anniversary of the beer. When we first launched Crazy Canuck Pale Ale, it was really the first west coast style pale ale on LCBO store shelves from an Ontario brewery. We at the brewery commonly referred to the beer as Canuck Pale Ale, and many bars and restaurants did the same, so when we found the right illustration for the front of the can, we decided it was time for a change and Canuck Pale Ale was born again.
Q. Where did the inspiration come from back in 2010 for the original name? PB: Like I mentioned earlier, it was a bold beer here in Ontario back in 2010 as an everyday offering, and when we launched it for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, we wanted to pay homage to the bold ski team “Crazy Canucks” of the 1980s. The first bottle we did (650ml for LCBO release) had skis on the label, but over time it evolved to its current look.
Q. Why now? Why change the name and the branding for the beer? PB: It was time and it felt right. Our new illustrated labels and artwork for our popular Tank Ten brands look great and we thought we should finally tie in our most popular core brand. Plus, when I saw the new artwork that was proposed, we had to move forward.
Q. So a name change…the beer hasn’t changed though, correct? PB: Absolutely not! It is the same delicious liquid inside the handsome new can. And I’d be remiss if I did not say that you should probably grab some for the Canada Day long weekend.
Q. Tell us a good story about one of your encounters with Gordie Levesque? PB: I was camping with the family up north in Algonquin Park and I noticed this big dude in a plaid shirt with suspenders river surfing on a log! As a previous wake boarder, I had to challenge him to a competition. Unfortunately I lost…Gordie is a machine on that log.

Great Lakes Brewery Relaunches Core Brand
Great Lakes Brewery Relaunches Core Brand
- Toronto’s oldest craft brewery rebrands popular Crazy Canuck Pale Ale and introduces Gordie Levesque -
June 23, 2014 (Toronto, ON) – Some will say it’s long overdue. Some will question our decision, and some people just won’t care, but the time has come for Great Lakes Brewery, the 2013 & 2014 Canadian Brewery of the Year, to make some significant changes to our popular Crazy Canuck Pale Ale.
First introduced during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Crazy Canuck (inspired by the Canadian ski team of the 1980s) has gone on to showcase the west coast pale ale style of beer to Ontarians, winning Gold Medals at the Canadian Brewing Awards in both 2010 & 2011 and Silver Medals in 2012 & 2013. The fun spirited Canadiana design of the can, with the loon, toque and maple leaf, became a favourite can with those who admire “kitschy” artwork, but with the last pallet of cans already out of the brewery to LCBO retail stores across the province, Great Lakes is set to launch a rebranded can and new name.
The beer will now be known as Canuck Pale Ale with the “Crazy” connotation removed. The loon, who has graced the can since the beginning, will be flying south for retirement, taking the red and white toque and maple leaves with him for safekeeping. In their place will be our good friend and occasional bear fighter “Gordie Levesque,” a handsome lad clad in plaid with a thick beard and a moustache that even Lanny MacDonald would be proud of.
It’s been said that “Canada is the only country in the world that knows how to live without an identity.”
This beer doesn’t help much with that crisis.
From the fiercely irresponsible stereotypical image on the front of the can to the distinctly American style of the beer inside it – we’ve really made a mess of things.
What have we done? Sorry.
“While the name and branding change, the wonderful liquid inside the can remains the same,” said Peter Bulut Jr., Owner of Great Lakes Brewery. “Our version of a west coast ale has been turning heads since we launched it in Ontario in 2010 and because it’s a serious beer, we wanted to give it a new look more in line with our increasingly popular Tank Ten series.”
The new can features Gordie Levesque, a fictional character born in our hearts. Gordie is a burly lumberjack that enjoys a good pint and the great outdoors. He is also planning on joining Twitter (@GordieLevesque) to share his outrageous life story; stories that include his epic battles with bears in the north, to drinking with Sasquatches and occasional moose wrangling.
The new cans will be rolling out to LCBOs across Ontario as of this week for our upcoming Canada Day end aisle promotion, so keep an eye out for them. The price remains at $2.50 a unit, making Canuck Pale Ale a great beer to welcome in the approaching Canada Day long weekend.
Garnett Gerry, Great Lakes’ talented artist who is also behind our illustrated Tank Ten beers like Harry Porter, RoboHop, Audrey Hopburn, and more, created the artwork. The graphic design is the work of Fabian Skidmore at Imagin.ca, who is responsible for the latest updates to the Great Lakes branding.

We Did It Again!! Canadian Brewery of the Year 2014
Great Lakes Brewery: 2014 Canadian Brewery of the Year - Toronto’s oldest craft brewery named Top Canadian Brewery two years in a row -
June 2, 2014 (Toronto, ON) – On May 31st, 2014 the 12th annual Canadian Brewing Awards and Conference was held in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Canadian breweries from all corners of the country were in attendance to hear the results of Canada’s largest beer competition, including the team from Great Lakes Brewery, who returned home to Toronto with the coveted Canadian Brewery of the Year award for the second consecutive year.
The 2014 edition of the Canadian Brewing Awards was the largest in their twelve-year history, as 916 beers from 138 breweries were submitted into 38 categories for judging. Awards of gold, silver or bronze were given to the top three ranking beers in each category. The judging was conducted in Toronto over three days in April by nearly 40 BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program)-certified beer judges in a blind tasting environment.
"Winning Brewery of the Year two years in a row is such a humbling honour,” stated Peter Bulut. Jr., the President of Great Lakes Brewery. “This award is a testament to the hard working staff at Great Lakes who tirelessly give 110% each and every day."
Great Lakes, who have had a strong showing in recent years at the Canadian Brewing Awards, took home the following medals, including a sweep of the entire American Style India Pale Ale category, which had an impressive 60+ entries:
Gold - THRUST! an IPA (American Style IPA category) Silver - Karma Citra IPA (American Style IPA category) Bronze - My Bitter Wife IPA (American Style IPA category) Gold – Stalin's Choice: Bourbon Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout (Wood or Barrel Strong) Gold – Harry Porter (Porter category)
"Winning the entire American Style IPA category is truly unbelievable and makes me so proud of the brewing team at Great Lakes. Mike Lackey, Noel Clarke & Kaly Kalimuthu are constantly pushing the envelope to create some of Canada's best brews and winning a complete category is proof of that,” said Bulut.
Great Lakes’ David Bieman, Troy Burtch and Bulut were in Fredericton to accept the awards and were amazed with the outpouring of congratulations and the camaraderie between breweries from all parts of Canada after the award was announced.
Great Lakes would also like to congratulate all the other medal winners, especially our friends at Amsterdam Brewery in Toronto for winning a silver medal for Maverick and Gose, a collaboration beer done with Great Lakes Brewery. Great Lakes would also like to congratulate the Old Yale Brewing Co. from Chilliwack, BC for winning Beer of the Year with their Sasquatch Stout and would love to give a shout-out to the team at Picaroons Traditional Ales Brewery (Fredericton) for their unbelievable hospitality during the awards and conference.
“Being a part of the craft brewing scene for over 25 years has been so much fun, but the last five years have been completely awesome. People are now so engaged and want to support the craft beer industry right across the country. It is really great to see so many successful breweries producing such great beer.”
