she’s diagnosed with lung cancer when she’s 46
she’s given a year to live
she doesn’t tell anyone, not even Percy or their kids
because she doesn’t want to burden them with grief
she simply wants to enjoy the rest of her life
when she has two months to go
she asks Percy to stay at home for a month
and they have the best month of their lives
(he doesn’t know it’s her second last)
and then he leaves for a Navy mission
she uses her last month to sort out her affairs
she catches up with old friends like the Seven
so she can see them one last time
(they don’t know she’s saying goodbye)
she splits her savings between Percy and her kids’ accounts
She spends afternoons boxing up her stuff
and the boxes get shoved in her cupboard
(because she knows she’s coming to the end)
Percy comes home and they have their joyful reunion
48 hours later, she is making dinner at home in her dressing gown
intuition tells her it’ll be the last time
and that night she wakes up coughing blood
Percy drives her to the hospital
her white blood cell count is going down like the Titanic
a son of Apollo working at the hospital slips her nectar and ambrosia
eventually the doctors tell Percy there’s nothing to be done
shattered, he gives his consent to stop trying
Annabeth, unconscious, slips into darkness
(the son of Apollo keeps feeding her nectar and ambrosia to ease her way)
at 1:30 in the morning, Percy hears her exhale, and then nothing
when she finds herself at the river waiting for Charon
she finally lets herself break down in tears
weeping for the life she’s lost and for the family she’s left behind
at approximately 1:35, she passes into the Fields of Elysium
of course she opts for rebirth: she and Percy agreed to try for the Isles of the Blest
she’s not given a huge fanfare, just the way she would have liked it
in both camps a shroud is burned to farewell her
a funeral is held for her mortal friends, and Poseidon and Athena both attend
(twenty years later, a daughter of Athena makes her way to camp at the age of seven)
