Women in Turf Program 2025

We were lucky enough to have our very own Christina Wilson participate in the 2025 Women in Turf Program. Christina is one of six other female volunteer turf managers that were given the opportunity to gain some invaluable tournament experience preparing Cobram Barooga Golf Club for the recent PGA Australia – Webex Players Series. This program, supported by John Deere, Envu, and the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA), is all about creating career pathways, building support networks, and encouraging greater female participation.

Under the guidance of Corey Clark from John Deere and Terry Vogel, superintendent at Cobram, Christina gained some valuable experience despite her background in horticulture, conservation and land management. The 43°C heat and 5 am starts made for a challenging yet rewarding experience with the opportunity to gain hands on experience about tasks such as fairway mowing, bunker maintenance, irrigation, and using POGO moisture technology. In addition to the practical work, the program included a range of memorable activities. These featured a women’s golfing clinic, industry panel discussions, a barbecue dinner on the Murray Darling River, and opportunities to meet inspiring individuals like Dylan Alcott and actor Travis Fimmel.

Celebrating Halfway for the Read for Trees Project

The Horowhenua District Council’s Read for Trees Project has reached an incredible halfway milestone, and we are thrilled to share the progress with you! This initiative aims to encourage young readers to devour books while contributing to a greener future. We’re partnering with the Horowhenua District Council on this exceptional program to encourage our youngsters to read – so we can plant more trees. Our amazing community readers have been turning pages into forests, and the numbers are extraordinary:

Key Achievements

Pages Read: Our community readers have impressively consumed 109,919 pages so far.

Leaves Gathered: The project has collected 2,260 leaves, symbolising the growth and impact of this initiative.

Trees Unlocked: We have already unlocked 22.6 trees for planting, surpassing our initial goal of 21 trees

Future Prospects

Thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Horowhenua Library, there is potential for up to 20 more trees to be added to our local green spaces. This not only enhances the beauty of the community but also contributes to a more sustainable environment for future generations. In a country where summer temperatures regularly soar past 40 degrees Celsius and heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent, Australia’s urban tree canopy isn’t just an amenity – it’s a matter of survival. As our cities grapple with the dual challenges of rapid population growth and climate change, the lessons from our neighbours in New Zealand offer valuable insights into the critical importance of urban forests.

The urban heat island effect hits Australian cities particularly hard. Our concrete jungles can be up to 7 degrees warmer than surrounding areas, making the cooling effect of tree canopy not just desirable but essential. Urban trees act as natural air conditioners through evapotranspiration, pulling water from the soil and releasing it through their leaves to cool our streets and suburbs.

Yet, like many growing cities worldwide, Australia’s urban centres face mounting pressure on their green infrastructure. The push for housing density, while necessary, often comes at the expense of our urban forest. We’ve seen this play out in New Zealand, where Auckland lost over 61 hectares of tree canopy in just one decade – a cautionary tale for Australian cities embarking on similar intensification journeys.
